Weight lifting shoes

What do you guys think of weight lifting shoes?

my squatting has come along quite well in the last 5 months or so and I've started using about 180 kg (roughly 400 lbs I think) in most of my workouts and I'm hoping to increase that soon. Whenever I pick the weight up and step back I can feel my shoes go squish in the heels (just lifting in basketball shoes atm). Surely that's a sign that my shoes aren't up to the task.

It's always nice to have gear that's designed for a certain task but weightlifting shoes are a bit pricey for me although if it's really important I could deal with the one off expense.

Are there any alternatives you could recommend that don't break the bank as much or should I just go for the real deal?

I've read that you should use shoes that have flat soles when lifting although the weightlifting shoes I've seen have a raised heel...

I'm for weightlifting shoes although I never wore any... they just look like they're good for lifting. I think Tychver and Kingfish have some.

The cheapest ones i could find were the VS Athletics ones http://www.vsathletics.com/product.php?xProd=1301

I've heard that squatting in dress shoes is very similar because of the raised heel, and I've even tried full squatting in my dress shoes, it feels nice.  I would like to hear someone else's take on this, but lifting in dress shoes feel really nice though, even if people stare at me at the gym.  The dress shoes are only temporary until I acutally get a pair of o-lifting shoes next month.

haha yeah, I never thought of wearing dress shoes. I guess they would be quite similar. I know that mine are pretty hard although I doubt I'll take them to the gym with me  :P I can imagine the looks I would get.

I think what I really want to know is what is the benefit of having the hard sole and heel?

 A hard heel/sole will keep the foot from moving around, and force from dissipating, transferring more of your power straight down into the ground.   The vs weightlifting shoes are great for athletes/recreational lifters.

also, a flat soled shoe like a converse chuck taylor is also a good squatting shoe, but you need to have a lot of flexibility to be able to squat very deep if you choose that option.  It will feel almost like youre standing in a slight dorsi flexion.

sweet  :) it all sounds good.

I think I'll stick to getting some actual weightlifting shoes, I would get the VS ones but I'd have to get them imported and I don't really want to do that.

when I get paid I'll get some adidas ones, just cos of the name really although everything I've owned made by adidas has been good so I reckon it'll be cool.

i've had the adidas ironworks2 for years.. still solid and does it job. can't go wrong with the romaleos either. just a little pricey but they feel very well made. i wear them every workout.. but only when lifting. i take them off as soon as im done.

dude squatting in weightlifting shoes is the best i had the same problem as you so i brought some weightlifting shoes for cheap at 80 buck australia, you can really feel the difference in the transfer of energy from the ground up and its so much easier to squat deep. i'm 6'5 i use to have a lil bit of a problem squatting deep with normal shoes coz of balance but with weightlifting shoes its easier to balance and keep the weight on the heel/forefoot

I have read good things about the ironworks shoes although they've proven to be rather difficult to get hold of (I was reading in forums that they were discontinued and these were posts from 2009).

I'm looking forward to trying them out when they arrive, hopefully will improve my lifting  ;D

If you wanted any of the shoes they do here they might ship to Romania, it's an option on when you're saying your address and they say they ship internationally.

I'm still going with the VS athletics, just cuz they're still cheaper, and I've seen reviews, b/c the shoe isn't a new product.
