I think it's more of a crossfit fettish. Everyone in crossfit at the military gyms have vibrams on when doing their WODs. I had a pair of vibrams also, loved em! Did everything in them. Squats, jumps, sprints, Physical training tests such as the 1.5 mile run. I never had any foot problems in them except for two things. When I ran the 1.5 miles my calves and ankles were sore for 3 days. I was also always shooting ball in them just to shoot around and a couple of times was asked to play pick up on full court. So I played full court in them as well. Left blisters on my feet. It was funny to think that I was killing those 3 back to back games I played in them and even dunked on someone in them in the main game. I stopped wearing them bc I wore them out and they developed holes in between the toes. I didn't develop any kind of foot pain with them or anything but some people do so be careful if you get them. Now I play in the waffle racers, and soon the new Kobe system 8's I just ordered.
Hope that helps, to me the best surface for them is grass or turf and carpet.
