Olympic Lifting Shoes

So I'm going to get some lifting shoes. Purely for squatting and any other oly lifting that I do.
Not planning (at this point in time) to do any crossfit although I can't rule it out down the track.

Main question is:
- Does the heel height, and more specifically the height difference between the fastlift and adipowers, really matter? Is 0.1 of an inch going to make any significant difference? I can pick up a pair of fastlifts for $119-$180 whereas the adipowers are going to set me back nearly $300.

I've looked at the following shoes-
- Fastlift 335
- Adidas powerlift
- Adidas power perfect
- Adidas adipower
- Reebok crossfit lifter
- Nike romaleos

I'm leaning towards the fastlift purely from a pricing and accessibility perspective. I can try them on at two different locations to get the sizing right, etc.

Have also just seen these ones which I've never heard of before but heel height for my height would be over an inch.

Also these just to confuse the matter further
http://www.weightliftingspares.com.au/product/sabo-weightlifting-shoes/

This is seriously a confusing area.

Long story short, are the inov-8 fastlift 335s a good shoe or is there a good enough reason to spend more on something else?

go cheap, no need to spend 300 bucks. i have pendlay do-wins that i got about five years ago on sale for $70. they're more expensive now because weightlifting/crossfit has blown up, but still in the $120-130 range. they're fantastic shoes, i've had to replace the laces but otherwise they're basically like new after years of multiple-times-per-week use.

dunno about heel height. i think the do-wins are 3/4" and that's been great for me. i do wonder if another quarter inch would make a difference, but not enough to get new shoes.
Muscles are nonsensical they have nothing to do with this bullshit.

FWIW, I've got the power perfect IIs. gukl does too. Very happy with them!
0.75'' heel, very durable (  i wear them 3 times a week for 3 straight years and they are still fresh ), reasonable price ( i bought them at ~120 euros/170 AUD but it seems they have dropped to 130 AUD there now , here is the first result i got: http://www.wiggle.com.au/adidas-power-perfect-ii-shoes-aw14/ ).
I am with LBSS, i don't see what difference 100s to 200s will make, already at ultra-decent constructions at the 100 range.

Agreed about the spending $300. I doubt I could have brought myself to spend that much anyway. More interested in the heel height difference but if I can get the power perfect IIs at a reasonable price then that would solve the issue.

@Vag how is the sizing on the power perfects? Is it true to normal sizes?

I second vag!

Power perfects have been great for me, and make a reasonable price compromise between the do wins/fast lift and ado power...while also still looking kinda kool. If you ever get into Olympic stuff properly I think you'd regret goin with a lower heel.

In terms of sizing I found haem true to Adidas trainer size, although if you have particularly wide feet they may be pretty tight.

Cheers. Thanks mate.

That was my main concern with the heel. I am planning on building my own lifting platform soon so oly lifting may get more of a run in the near future.

Brilliant. I am a 12 in Adidas runners so that should suit.

Have found a local store who price match so may be able to try them on and still get a good deal.

Mine run a bit small. Had to go up a full number IIRC. At work now, I will get back to this message and edit it with the exact numbers when i get back home.

^^^^^
Just checked.

My adidas boost shoes are 9,5UK/10US and they are perfectly fitting.
My nike basketball regular size is 9,5UK/10,5US ( wtf , 9,5UK is 10US for adidas and 10,5US for nike ??? ) and they are fitting great too.
For some reason i do not recall, i got the power perfect IIs much bigger, 11UK/11,5US which is 1,5 size up from the same brand trainers.
My PPs are spacy for sure, but it is not like they are huge, probably got them half a size bigger than i should. Not sure why i went 1,5 size up, maybe there was no 10,5/11 availability so i chose the upper side.
Anyway, all the reviews say they run kinda small, one size up is a "safe" choice, but if you can try them at that local store, then that is the best ( captain obvious ).

Picked up my Power Perfect II's yesterday. To say I'm excited is a fair understatement. Didn't get a chance to use them but looks like I'll get in the gym tonight.  :ibsquatting: :ibsquatting: :ibsquatting:

Got them from Gym and Fitness in Melbourne. They ended up price matching as much as they could. Wiggle were $133 and they did $145 which I was pretty happy about. Got to try them on and make sure they fit. Got a 12 which is the same size I take in a runner/trainer.

Good question. I've only squatted in them twice now. One front and one back.

Front squats I noticed a depth and posture improvement immediately. On back squats I almost felt like my form was as good as it's ever been on sets with 60 & 80kgs. Above that was still better too. I've got some thoracic area and right hip tightness at the moment which is not helping though. I'll be doing a ton of squatting and cleans over the next 6 weeks so not doubt I'll have a good chance to get to know them well.

Probably the biggest difference is my feet being locked in and not moving. Really enjoying this as I have a habit of my feet moving around in my shoes.

Ai, i missed this Thread..

I have the chance to test out the expensive addidas...
And i personaly own a pair of Do-win.
I agree with the Go cheap statement.  Nothing really hi-tec here.
all u need is a Hard stable base to stand on with a good strap to lock you foot down.  The Bottom sole last forever as u never walk that much in this shoes anyway.

Actually, To my knowledge this Olifting shoes with elevated heel is similar to stuff a plate on ur heel when u squat. For better range of motion when lifter lack flexibility if the calf/ankle.

I meet an american Pilot (who is competing in USA raw powerlifting) and he wear the 5 fingers to squat; he explain and try to tell me all the benefit of squatting Bare Footed while i was in my Do-win that day.

Which make me wonder... if this is just an flexibility issue, it can be fixed, or should be fixed.... instead of using a Olifting shoes eh?

(I am talking about Squat only,  O-lifting is an other thing...)

the best olympic lifters in the world -- who are almost by definition genetically gifted in terms of biomechanics -- wear oly shoes. barefoot purism is stupid.

I don't necessarily think barefoot purism is stupid. Maybe just misguided. As average people we're making up for a lot more deficiencies than any higher level athlete. What these shoes do is level the field a little more in our favour of being able to get better results than we otherwise would have.

I feel the need to post that photo of Arnold squatting barefoot here just because

stupid, misguided, same diff. pretty much any kind of prescriptive purism is stupid. "no machines" is stupid. "you must squat to get strong" is stupid.
