At most, 3 session left in 2018.  I got no skill....

What are you talking abut? Your effort and progress is legendary. You are 37 years old, with a lot of work and with kids. And yet you have managed to be so close to dunking now ( with a 7'5'' reach !!! ). Most importantly, you have done the most difficult part, you have managed to deal with your personal 'demons' that kept leading you to wrong and inconsistent training.
You've got tons of skills scooby and even more tons of balls. Just keep at it, it that dunk is coming and it is very well deserved too!
Target training paces (min/km), calculated from 5K PR 22:49 :
Easy run : 5:48
Tempo run : 4:50
VO2-max run :4:21
Speed form run : 4:02

---

it's the biggest trick in the run game.. go slow to go fast. it doesn't make sense until it smacks you in the face and you're like ....... wtf?

omg @ that first video .. one of your best misses. got way up and crushed it .. for that specific dunk, probably should have tried to crush it even harder/faster, seems like you held back just a bit & tried to land it a little safer -> which for many dunk attempts, is probably the best thing to do .. but for a jump like that and a pretty perfect lob, that one needed more of a "whip", just smashing that ball downward - way faster.

x2

and at some point, it just gets annoying seeing you progress physically but digress mentally.

It used to be "BIY" all the time. Now it's "i'm slow, I got no skill, i'm fat, i'm failing" etc.. but it just makes it worse when the reality of it is, you're making progress.

I know scoob reads the stuff I/we say, but i'm not sure it's really sinking in. IMHO, it needs to sink in.

I missed sub 5 mile by 4 seconds in my last race a few days ago, I know exactly what I did wrong. I haven't hit a sub5 mile officially or on my watch yet, so technically 2 years. Obviously it isn't 10+ but, it's still frustrating. Every "missed attempt" makes me want to run more aggressive and run hard, just like every missed dunk made me want to murder the rim more brutally. It's the same.

It's simple. Keep figuring out how to harness your frustration and turn it into aggression, but remain positive and focused. You're due for a session where you not only land one dunk, but several hard ones. You're just not seeing that. It's not going to be "oh I landed one dunk" at the level you're jumping right now, it'll be "here's a mix of 6 dunks I landed yesterday".

Your mental game is fading but your physical game is improving, .. bite down and fix the mental game. Having both in the "positive" is a good thing. And just another point .... being so close yet failing, is where it really begins. Everything else is just fluff. The real grind is when you're right there, and can't land it. You can't get down on yourself at any of these misses, they are pretty much "makes" but they fly out.

Also it's just funny.. I remember when you couldn't even get close to throwing a good lob, now I see you throwing several each video.

:ibjumping:

yup ^^

crazy though.. scoob couldn't throw or even attempt a lob initially, now he's throwing solid lobs and getting near max RVJ on dunk attempts, crushing some misses.

not sure if he realizes that most people on here, consider certain levels of misses PR's as well. If you go from weak miss, to crush miss, to nuclear miss, that's progress. With crush & nuclear miss, landing those dunks can come down to a coin flip. Even the best dunkers out there have tons of "misses" footage, ie put up by dunkademics etc.

TLDR: people who want to dunk should not lose sight of progress being made with missed dunks. If the misses are getting better, no reason to be negative about it, that's for sure. Just get more aggressive and crush it. They will fall eventually.

expecting a video of scoob trying RL takeoff and not being able to touch the rim.. that's just what he needs though, switch it up right at the very moment he's about to crush one. :uhhhfacepalm:

tons of elite dunkers do LR-R.

just one, to motivate scoob not to care about changing to RL-R right now.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHwmgmgwf8k" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHwmgmgwf8k</a>

or how about KWE:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeWQ_WT_Cds" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeWQ_WT_Cds</a>

or how about Porter:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWjOhVw7WD8" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWjOhVw7WD8</a>

or how about Dexton:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kke7diy6i5w" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kke7diy6i5w</a>

I could probably drop like 100 dunkers in here who are LR-R........

After he starts landing some, then it will be more acceptable for him to try RL-R, but until then, makes no sense to me to switch it up right now. I'm sure he's actually tried some RL jumps and they probably feel horrible, that's why he does LR's.

By telling someone to try RL at this stage, it's like asking them to move away from their strength. There's a reason he jumps LR, left leg is probably his strongest leg.

Also, even in basketball philosophy, LR makes more sense for a righty. If someone is a righty, they do layups off of their left leg. So generally the left leg going into the plant should be the strongest leg. It's like you're telling someone to try a right handed layup by jumping off of their right leg, that's how awkward trying to switch from LR to RL is (or visa versa) for someone who is a natural LR planter.

ps: I understand that RL-R theoretically gives you more time/room to land a dunk, but not if you get up way lower in the jump itself or lack the coordination. So it's just not a theory i'd mess with until LR-R land often. Look at Isaaih Rivera, spent so much time trying to master RL-R, still hasn't. But he did that after he already reached near-elite dunker status. It's the same story for alot of dunkers who try acquiring RL-R and LR-L.

141211 W11  Weight.  Session w/ Coach A

I think i am slowing down for the Qtr Squat... may be... is time to stop adding weight?
hip thrust is still alright... can continue to add weight.
Some one is waiting for me at the rack while i was squatting.  so i gave it up.. and did the barbell calf on the Smith machine.
Without the need to balance, i can now use 3 plates under my ankle.  With much more Range of motion and probably can go much heavier without the need to balance.
Up fast, down slow.  Will try to go much heavier next week.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfRZ_Ms07-Q" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfRZ_Ms07-Q</a>

I ran for 30 min at night also.. 400m x 10 while my girl do 60m x 10 sprint for every lap i do.
After the sprint, she told me about some pain at her Achilles tendon where it is connecting to the heel.   This is exactly what i am scare about.... Sunday will be race day.
I plan to have a time trail on wed while running full 1km holding hands. guess that wont be happening..

Lets just see what will happen on Sunday... will be a gamble.
better rest than risk injury before event day.

As for Jumping with ball / Dunk attempt... i wont change my right left plant.  but i may change my ball  just to try different thing.

Thanks adarq for the video... i just want to ask one thing.. how did they manage to turn of gravity.... they all jump like... they are on the moon or something.

Just realized I was mentioned so ill toss my .02 in: I DON'T  advise switching plants. I plant RL-R (Im assuming i cant remember being a DL jumper before this always SL) due to a previous injury. It was what was comfortable coming off that injury. That's the key IMO. Do what feels most natural as far as plant/style. I CAN plant LR-R and get up decently but it still feels awkward to do for ME jumps (in game doesnt count it just happens instinctively). Andrew hit it on the head with the IR reference. Its tough to master something new even for elite guys.

Keep grinding Scoob! Youre so close!

Regarding achilles insertion pain:

Is she limping? Or showing any signs of it affecting her movement? If so, probably shouldn't let her race.

I mean it bothered her enough to let you know, so i'm just assuming it's worth paying very close attention to.

If she's feeling pain during warmups (or at any point while running), she needs to know - to let you know. And if she lets you know, as a parent you might not want to let her do it. This is actually a teachable moment for both you & her IMHO, not to push through injury. You need her to be honest with you and not lie about the pain too. Achilles pain, especially at the insertion, is nothing to play around with.

Ask her about the pain, but don't tell her about the consequences (not racing). Ask if it's sharp, dull, when it hurts, how bad, etc etc. Sharp = bad. Check to see if it's affecting her movement, if so = not a good idea to let her run until it's healed.

Just my 2cents.

171214 W12 Max Effort Jump/Dunk Attempt w/ Coach A  -  Closer Than before? or just close not not close enough

Failed all the dunk attempt.
BUT something happened today.  The Ball Off Track Failure rate declined alot.  it use to be 70% failure rate with the ball flying everywhere... wasting jump or run.
Today... it is more like 1 in 3 or 1 in 2 throw where i am in the air with the ball.

So... May be.. I can consider that as improvement.   the chance of me being in the air with the ball in the right places  seems to be higher today.

Video come later tonight. (is still in my phone)

As for my girl, I am helping her massage the back of her ANKLE (not knee, it was a typo) daily, seems like some sort of dull nagging pain, nothing sharp. Will rest for 5 days before the race on Sunday.

Scoob, I remember you posting something asking whether your daughter should be trained or not - I didn't post anything as I think, ultimately, it's the parent's choice. But, I DON'T think a young kid should be competing to the point of getting injuries doing their sport. That seems crazy to me. So, my opinion is to strongly reconsider why she's doing it.

Scooby the hip thrust thing is not a great use of your time. The guy Brett who popularised doesn't even stand by it anymore. He set training knowledge back decades with that dumb exercise, hope you're not wasting your time in vain.

The key here is, training/competing through injury IMHO. So I agree that if there's stuff going on, it's time to shut it down for a while. And in this specific case, within the last week we've learned about achilles insertion pain and pain behind the knee. It's good at least that you are forcing her to rest for 5 days - no running. But going right into a race, you just have to be overprotective. If she feels fine, no problems, then I dno, sounds like it could be ok. But if there's stuff going on, opting out of a race could be a good idea.

Experiencing some injuries as a result of competition/practice etc, even at such a young age, does happen. I mean just from myself, I broke a finger at 8 or so playing basketball & was always getting hurt, stuff like that. I see little kids getting hurt all the time playing pee-wee football at the local park. With contact sports, there's definitely risk. For non-contact sports though, acquiring injuries, especially from overuse/too frequent high intensity perhaps, definitely needs re-evaluation. Because at this point, it's often directly related to training itself - too much / too often / too hard etc.

Scooby the hip thrust thing is not a great use of your time. The guy Brett who popularised doesn't even stand by it anymore. He set training knowledge back decades with that dumb exercise, hope you're not wasting your time in vain.

I don't like hip thrusts either, or the kneeling-to-jump stuff. It is a prescription of his coach though, can't just cut it out as easily, especially if the coach finds it so effective - which could be the case for his coach specifically & of previous clients responding well to it. Also, if hip thrusts are useless, probably not too much harm in performing them towards the end of the workout -> waste of time but nothing detrimental i imagine.

pc!

I posted previously and still believe in my advice that she should find an athletics club to train with. Playing sports should always be about fun, particularly when someone is 6!!!

171217 1k Run event with my girl
I read the route, study the turn and distance and planned my way thou out the course with Time limited in each turn.
We went ahead to the starting line 30 min, but only able to line up at the 2nd row.  Those Dad with their boy at the first row clearly want to win.  We are the only girl / dady in the front pack.

I spotted this Dad with his boy all suited up like a pro and i can tell, he is here to win.  SO AM I,  I told me girl, we are here to get first place.  With all those training we did.  Both she and me is ready.

And i told her.. clearly, this dad and his boy is professional, we are going to use them as pacer.  And wait for our chance to pass near the end.

As planned, we Blast off right off the start, and before the first corner, we are in 1st place.  I hear super dad behind me saying.. no need to go too fast... keep our pace.  Before the 2nd corner, super dad pass us as expected, and I told my girl... not to get pull away... Stay close and use him as a pacer...

Sadly.. they are too fast and still pulling away....  during the course of the run, a few Daddys decided to ran on by them-self leaving their kid behind.   I knew this will happen, because in this particular race, the rule said... they will count by TOTAL time as team time instead of the slowest member time.   So these DAD who wanted to win will ditch their kid and ran on their own.

I wont do that... and I am hoping me and my girl.. will be fast enough... even if those dad decided to play this game in this non sportman way.

At the end of the race, me and my girl manage to hold on the 2nd spot.... behind that super dad team,  a few boys is close behind and even pass us, but we manage to get back 2nd spot passing them right before the finish line.

To sum it up:
1st Girl to finish.
2nd Kid to finish.
2nd Kid and Parent finish together as a team!

Official result.
First place is a dad who Ditched his son and ran under 4 min himself.. with his son is far behind at 5:30.
Super Dad only got 2nd place (he is mad because he did not read the rule.. lol)
3rd place is another dad who Ditched his son and ran under 4 min.. where his son is far behind.

4th and 5th have the exact same time... My name and my girl got placed on 5th... I dont know what happen.. because.. I clearly see NO kid pass us except for 1....
but that wont matter.. since 4th and 5th wont get trophy anyway.

I am very disappointed.. and i think my girl is also... But...to be honest... We PRed in this race... by 20 sec or so...
And clearly we should be 2nd place (consider this is a family race for kid)..... losing to these DAD who decide to run on their own.... is... just....(I dont know what to say)

I guess, I saw the rule, and i knew this would happen, but I gambled.  One of the girl who we always try to compete with did not show up today... (may be her parents know this rule is stupid... and would end up like this)

Look at the final score sheet, 95% of the parents pass the finish line side by side with their kid.   These winner.... really make me wonder... what good can this mean for their kid.

There would be 1 more 500m run in Jan 2018  (Kids only & Kids with Dad).

I want her to win... I am not sure if she want it as much as I do.  I think... I am turning into those monster parents.... being pushy...
Or may be... I just want to work hard with my kid together to achieve something....  know it is not easy... but we will work through it.

TO Mutumbo0000:
Sooner or later, my kid will be on her own... she is having fun with me now.. I just want to keep this as a father daughter thing.... going to a club would just mean it is just another after school class... like those swimming, violin, math lesson she already have.

^^ So confused.. you are very disappointed but, you stayed with your girl & 2 (or 3?) of the top 3 had the parent/dad leave the child and run by themselves to attain the best possible score. Yet, you stayed with your child and got #5..............

How are you disappointed? lmao.

Btw, you call them "super dad" but you sound like a "super dad" :ninja:

I respect that you ran with your girl & didn't leave her .. but that's clearly not going to give you a chance for #1, it's absolutely impossible to do that and beat a team where the adult runs fast and the kid runs fast. The mathematics aren't in your favor.

I'd do what you did, or I wouldn't even enter that event. Honestly that event sounds batshit insane to me, which I stated originally - months back (lol). It sounds chaotic and weird as fu*k. Also I wouldn't want to hold my kid's hand and run, ever.. That adds to the "batshitness" of it, seems so weird to me. Just the thought of parents and children running hard, while holding hands, and some parents taking off full speed leaving their kids behind, just makes me angry thinking about it. Sounds fu*king nuts. LMFAO.

I think your girl will have most fun racing kids her age, and that's it. Not this parent/child combo stuff. From the sound of it, she's doing very well and having fun.

Man, my 2 cents.. enroll her in kids only (if she wants to race).

I saw a girl this weekend at my race, do the "kids dash", just young kids racing, she must have been 9 or so. She smoked all of the same-aged boys @ probably ~600m, was so impressive. She stood out, definitely already runs alot & loves it, you could tell. FWIW, the only kids that I saw holding hands with their parents and running, were kids that were crying hysterically........... lmfao.

Also there's another girl around here who is crazy fast, like ~12 or something, dropping 19:XX 5k's. Can tell no one is forcing her to run at all, absolutely loves it, she's very competitive. It's cool seeing kids who enjoy competing and already have the mindset of taking it serious from such a young age.. taking it serious but loving it, having fun etc, that's the right combo.

You didn't mention her "injury", I imagine she's fine, no problems? If so, great news.

Also one word of advice.. If you are disappointed, try not to show it too much to your daughter. Make sure you are being very positive after winning and defeat. With the girl I mentioned who is 12 running fast times, she wrecks every girl & boy in here age group, and i've seen some of them pout/walk off upset/show no sportsmanship. Then I saw her lose and she handled it like a pro - smiling like a champ - no worries. But I guarantee you she pushed herself harder in training after that. Be careful not to teach your daughter how to "show disappointment" (by mirroring your emotions). Kids are a sponge.. teach her to be positive after losing. Those are the small things that make an enormous difference as an athlete matures.
