My team won 24-0 against the Roosters on the weekend  ;D

I have been treating my achilles conservatively so haven't been training. I will commence training again next week.

I caught up with a friend for dinner tonight. He's a couple of years younger than me and he started hanging out with me and my circle of friends when we were 15. At the time he was an innocent kid from a good family who never drank, smoked or touched drugs. I've never done drugs either (excluding alcohol as a drug). Unfortunately I feel like we led him astray because soon after he started hanging out with us, he started doing all of those things. Tonight I saw him and he was on meth and proudly telling me about selling drugs and who he was going to bash over unpaid ticks (drug debts)  :( 

The sad thing is about 4 years ago I lent him money  as he had sold all of his possessions to get drugs. At the time I lectured him about making better decisions and avoiding drugs, which he promised me he would. 12 months ago he came to me begging for help because people were after him. I told him I would not give him money but I would stand by him as I knew the people who he owed money to and I resolved the situation without anybody getting physically hurt. Once again I lectured him about the dangers of the drug industry and how he has an opportunity with his life to turn it around...it obviously fell on deaf ears.

As a drunk it sounds hypocritical but I wish he would get his shit together. I'm not the kind of person to walk away from long time friends but when people refuse to change it makes friendships difficult. As a realist his situation does not look good. Apart from me and 1 or 2 childhood friends all of his friends / acquaintances are career criminals and junkies. His family abandoned him 4 years ago and he currently lives in a squalor share house with 4 others who also have drug habits. With the quantities that he is now dealing with I'm certain that it will only be a matter of time before he is in for a long prison stint...the irony is that he cannot even see that he is a junkie and has a serious problem as he views himself as a dealer  :uhhhfacepalm:

29th April I had my fitness for the Army and I passed.

Minimum requirements:
15 Push Ups
45 Sit Ups
7.5 Beep Test

I did 35 push ups, 50 sit ups and 7.7 in the beep test. I could've done much better in the beep test but didn't push myself. As soon as I got over 7.5 I was content.

Now just have to wait for them to contact me for enlistment  ;D

WOW! I went to league training tonight. I rocked up late and missed the warm up due to work. I didn't listen to my body I probably should not have trained at all. As soon as I sprinted my left Achilles gave way and I pulled up sore. Back to limping and completely ruined my last 3 weeks of rehab. I've spent hundreds of dollars on physios but now it's back to square 1. This season is deja vu. Last season my whole season was ruined because of injury. 2019 it's the same. I'm just embarrassed and disappointed with how fkn injury prone my body is, particularly my legs. I just play rugby league for fun but it's fkn mentally draining as well as the physical toll. I don't know how much longer I can keep doing this...

I can relate. It's not a good spot to be in.

Before any of you knew me, I was a hoop addict - this was way before I was on forums etc. I had been dedicated to basketball since probably age 8, through ~22 years old (around 2004-2005 or so). From probably ~14 years old onwards, I couldn't stop getting injured. Broken fingers & arms, bad muscle tears & strains, tendinitis, contusions, lacerations on my head (tho not too many sprains - bionic ankles *ninja*). Just got so annoying that I finally stopped playing basketball. It was really hard for me to "quit", but it had been brewing for years. Every time i'd get back to 100%, then get injured again, i'd think maybe I should be putting this energy into something else. The good news is, I found other stuff (safer and just as fun, or more fun).

edit: I think my timeline was:
basketball (14 years, injuries/quit) + boxing (2 years, injuries/quit), + dunking (4 years, quit), getting fat (3 years), running (4 years through current)
but I eventually realized, it's more like: running (14 + 2 + 4 + 4) :ninja:
my lesson learned: stay away from contact sports.

Anyway, i'm definitely not saying you should retire or anything - that's 100% up to you obviously. But, when it gets to the point where it's becoming a serious mental drain/stress, it might make sense to step away for a while & focus on something that's challenging but will also keep you healthy for a considerable amount of time.

You didn't hurt yourself actually playing rugby, but - you did rush your recovery to practice for the league. That's one of the big problems I find with team sports & such - once you get in that team mindset, you'll do things that you know you shouldn't because you don't want to let down your teammates etc. Take care of yourself first & foremost.

Heal up man!

6 years ago on this day I was working in a meat factory for $20.50 an hour starting at 4am. Every day I would wake up early, get to work and watch the clock and calculate the money in my head. 90 minutes prior to close I'd hose down and clean all the machines, and come home soaking wet smelling like meat. At the time I felt very resentful because I had gone to uni for 4 years, which cost me 40k. Yet here I was underutilised, working in a low paying job, with most of my colleagues barely able to speak English. These days I have a much better job and earn double the amount, but I still feel miserable. 6 years ago if I was in my current position I would feel happy. However, now I still feel underutilised...

Sorry to hear that mate. Has the new role in the Army not been much fun so far?

I haven't started the Army yet. Just waiting for the call but unfortunately I'm not much use atm with a busted Achilles. It's been over a week and I still can't walk without pain. Mentally I've pulled the pin for this season, which has been good. I'm still going out to watch the games but I'm not attending training's and have let my coach / team know the situation. I'm sure I'll get the bug to play again as soon as I'm fit but for now it's been good not worrying about when I can potentially play again.

In terms of the job I started a new role within the same department (for less pay) in March. Ultimately I still have to report to the same management though and apart from being in a different location the same problems still exist. I have no confidence in HR as they work closely with management and don't seem to place much emphasis on confidentiality. They are aware of there being problems within our department but it's easier for them to turn a blind eye. Of people that I know of who have complained to HR they have been scapegoated by management and made out to be 'troublemakers'. These people are then monitored and performance managed at the first opportunity until they either quit or get fired. Apologies if anybody works in HR here but from my experience they have done more harm then good and tend to side with management over employees.

The first thing you learn in business is that high sick leave and high staff turnover are the signs of low staff morale and or poor management. My department has had a staff turnover of close to 40% in the last 12 months and we regularly have high amounts of sick leave. Last year they realised turnover was a problem so they employed most of the workers as permanent employees. Yet half of them still left because it's a toxic environment and I can't wait to get out of there. When I first started in this department 18 months ago I always wondered why one of my colleagues appeared so apathetic and cynical. I now understand completely how she feels and being passionless and emotionally detached is the easiest way to survive from one day to the next.

I have been looking for jobs since December but have only actually applied for about 12 jobs, but each application is improving. I have my first job interview this Monday so hopefully I can get an offer. If not I'll keep applying. The reason for the low amount of applications is that I really don't want to take a step backwards career wise. Also the majority of jobs are all casual or contract positions, which offer less job security then what I have now. Hopefully with the end of the financial year more jobs will start being advertised and I'll find something. Until then I'm biting my tongue and surviving day to day.

my gf spent a year in an absolutely toxic work situation, which she finally got out of when she quit last month. a big part of the drain on her energy and mood was the constant self-doubt, wondering if it was just her shortcomings that meant she wasn't performing as well as she expected of herself or doing as much as she was being asked to do. that was never the case: she's brilliant at the responsibilities she had (although they're not her first choice of professional work) but the company she worked for was shambolic in the extreme, not to mention corrupt. (by the way, folks: do your due diligence before you donate money to a nonprofit.) it was a strange relief when she realized that one of the only coworkers she respected told her that she was crying every day out of frustration.

not the same situation as yours in the details but sounds similarly shitty. good luck getting out of there.

also, yeah: i do not regret "retiring" from competitive ultimate. i was never as good at it as you are at rugby but i had a couple of years of being a respectable player before the sixth ankle sprain just pushed me over the edge. playing pick-up now, in tennis shoes rather than cleats, is just good fun. if i were you i'd think seriously about hanging up your cleats and sticking to activities that are less likely to derail you for months at a time.

I'll be grateful once I get out of my work environment. I don't doubt my skills. I can type at close to 100 WMP and I'm meticulous with reading and actioning my emails, and I always complete projects within deadlines and am a proactive employee. Most of the criticism I receive is due to my role as a supervisor with management complaining about mistakes that my staff make or areas of operation not being adequately back-filled. In terms of back-fill we are running on skeleton staff due to fiscal constraints so whenever we have planned or unplanned leave it's a matter of robbing Peter to pay Paul. If I'm aware of planned leave I'll communicate to management two weeks prior with the plan of covering the area. At the time they'll have no issues with the plan but on the day they'll complain that their area isn't adequately covered and question my decision making ability. In terms of mistakes made by staff it's often due to conflicting advice from management. For example they will ask me to tell my staff to call them whenever customers want to discuss 'x'. Yet later they will complain that they are receiving too many calls from my staff referring customers to them for 'x'. However, if my staff don't transfer the calls to them about 'x' they will complain that they didn't receive the call about 'x'...

My interview on Monday went well. However, I am still yet to hear back on whether I have the job or not.

As far as rugby league goes I'm not going to play this year. Once my Achilles recovers I'm going to focus on building up my fitness again and getting back to the gym. My fitness goals will be more lifestyle orientated, such as losing 30lbs.
