Did 75% of chest/tri/shoulders tonight lol! Was good, last 25% was spent talking to a Ukranian guy about Oly lifting...turns out he coaches. He had noticed me lifting for the past few weeks amd was curious what I was training for, PRs, etc. Well, he offered some pointers and some quick lessons with the bar on snatches, clean and jerk, and hang cleans. Lil tips made a huge difference! He offered to work with me when were in the gym together from now on. SWEET!

Hey Chris,

I know you don't really work on your single leg jump, but even without the practice, has it gone up as your strength went up?

Do you have any framework to illustrate this?  For example when you were squatting/deadlifting X at a bodyweight of X, your SLRVJ was Y, and now you're squatting/deadlifting A at a bodyweight of B, and your SLRVJ now is C, etc...

Also something like, maybe your SLRVJ stopped increasing after the 2X BW squat mark, while your DLRVJ kept going up...?

Lastly, why aren't you experimenting with half squats?  At your advanced DLRVJ, they can possibly help peak out another inch or 2 if you implement them correctly

Just curious to see stuff like this... Thanks

Hmmm... I dont actually have any good data points in regards to weight room numbers vs SLRVJ. I almost want to say im not a good candidate for that type of correlation and heres why:

-pre knee injury in high school I was a more explosive SL jumper. I jumped ~36" off one sophomore year and maybe 32-33 off 2. So, if i had never gotten hurt I may not have ever jumped off 2 predominantly as I seemed to be a natural SLRVJ guy.

-Since I never train it except for in games (not really training) it hasnt really gone up at all with my weight room numbers. It goes up a few inches when I play regularly but even then its probably only a repeatable 38" or so. Ive gone over 40" in games (caught a 2 hand oop and didnt realize I jumped off 1 til I landed lol) but thats notuch higher than it was 12 years ago. And definitely not a positive correlation to my numbers now.

I guess I could do some SL training stuff here if my knee would fully heal. Would be interesting but Ive gotten used to planting whichever way is quickest in games. It comes second nature now although im definitely higher in a RL DL plant in practice.


As for the half squat stuff.... Ive actually used banded supra max quarters in peaking phases multiple times but my right knee wont allow it currently. It DOES have a great carryover to DLRVJ though.


Final note...Im very convinced that SLRVJ is HIGHLY correlated to BW. Even tho Im 8-9% BF at 182ish lbs I can FEEL the difference from when I was a similar BF% at low 170s weight. It made MORE of a difference then in my SL jumps than it did in my DL jumps. (this was with similar ratios on squat/dead to BW btw...I havent tested this now that Im significantly stronger at a heavier BW)

Yeah I agree about the BW stuff.  I actually jumped my highest when I'm cutting (under 100g of carbs a day).  The loss of water weight has me weighing 5lbs less than normal and I always PR in these situations even though I'm on a caloric deficit diet and stuff..

I use bands on my slightly below parallel squats, and am just now starting to implement half squats.  I was considering using bands on them too but not sure if necessary.  You think the bands are useful for partials from your experience?

Absolutely.  Hell, Ive used them in ATG squats woth success too. They help keep speed up and make you focus on finishing the movement rsther than letting momentum help. It directly correlated to the speed ofy triple extension in an actual jump. I felt like I was finishing jumps with much more snap.

Yeah I love the effect of using bands.  I was considering my program and thinking I should add it but thought to myself, "Am I trying to get too fancy by adding bands to everything?" 

I mean bands have such a great effect on vert training I see no logical reason NOT to add them to everything but doing so makes me think im overcomplicating it..

I'm using bands on my below parallel squats, but want to add them when I get good at half squats and also in my current RDL's too.  Most people would say 'no need, don't get too crazy', but I see NO REASON why not...

I switch it up....keeps the body on edge IMO.

I hated using bands on de as deadlifts tho, stopped doing them and deficit deadlifts.

Squat day!

BW: 184-185lbs
Energy: good...not great. 7/10.
Soreness/pains: right knee is still quite tight and sore until Im fully warm. Comes back after Ive cooled off as well. Grrr.

Squats:
135 x5, 225 x3, 315 x1, 365 x1, 405 x1. Woot! Back to 405! Wasnt easy but never felt like I was stuck.

365lbs: x3, x3. First set...rep 3...damn near got stuck. Literally watched myself stall just above parallel for a split second, screamed some profanity and hey...shit went up. ;) 2nd set felt much better lol!

315lbs: x8, x8, x7...re rack or get stuck, 30 seconds to catch breath... x2. Dammit.

Some circuits of step ups, back extensions and calf raises. Only did half of my intended core work...quite late tonight.

2 things: starting to clean up diet again and strongly considering going to paused squats even tho Id probably drop my max and sets down 40-50lbs to save my knee. Opinions from those who have gone to paused squats extremely welcome!!

Bah. Bad week this week, deadlifted tonight. No accessory work or core as the wife got a migraine while squatting :(

So... 135 x5, 225 x3, 315 x1, 405 x1, 445 x1.

405: x3, x3.
315: x10, x10, x10.

Felt good, not great but oh well. Really bummed about my knee, sometimesits fine other times I couldn't jump 40" if i had a gun to my head. Probably time to see a doc. Also related...lack of hoops and jumping in general is killingmy run up/efficiency. I played some Wednesday instead of lifting and was around 40" running on most I'd say. Had one that my friends said looked like normal me (44-45ish) but it FELT like shit. Also...missed the dunk...horrible timing lol! The ONLY good thing is somehow, some way, I rammed a nice one hander in a pickup game off 1 foot. Surprised the absolute hell out of me.

migraines are awful, my condolences to your wife. i got an Rx this year for a migraine-specific drug that actually seems to work: the last time i had an aura i popped one and no migraine materialized. small sample size, but hey, i'm glad to have them. worth talking to a doc if she hasn't already.
Muscles are nonsensical they have nothing to do with this bullshit.

We would (will if they persist) but they're incredibly rare for her. I cant remember the last one she had honestly. Ive been to a few docs about the ones I have, they call them cluster migraines but no one has found my trigger yet. I'll get them everyday for a few weeks then none for a period of time (currently almost a year and a half, wooo!). They suck. Hard.

Squatted today...BW at 184lbs now. Didnt push to hard because of the knee, just stopped sets wherever it felt like the next rep would have been hard at all instead of pushing out 2-3 more.

135 x5, 225 x3, 315 x1 all paused. 365 x1, 405 x1.

365lbs: x2, x2.
315lbs: x8, x5, x7.

Some box jumps and calf raises at 500lbs (3x20). Weird...box jumps were easy 34-35" SVJ level and the knee didnt hurt at all but I took a one step run up and it was a little sore, could just barely feel it. Sigh. Stretch and ice, skipped the stepups/lunges for the knees sake. Not sure unilateral work would be the best right now. Hopefully get into the doc Wed or Thurs.

Did my back/bicep and chest/tricep workouts this week. Skipped speed day in an attempt to make knee a little better. Cut back on jumps as well drastically.

Shit workout tonight. Warmed up and got up to my 405 x1 and felt good...then had to stop for 20 mins, stopped sweating, barely pulled 445, got mad, went to shit. Did 405 x2 and 315 x10 and called it a night. No use pushing it when mad/not warm. Blah. BW at 186lbs... gains definitely in the chest/shoulders/upper back.

Sad day. Went to break in my Jordan XX9s today and shoot some jumpers and knee wasnt even having half speed cuts and one step jumps. Idk wether to be pissed as fuck or depressed as hell. Im gna have to shut down jumping and probably squatting for awhile. I may...may try to SL jumping off my left to keep some semblance of reactivity and such but idk. Chalk this day up as shitty.
