Hi JDub

I don't specifically train my vertical these days, any increase in vertical jump I am getting from my strength work is a nice bonus, but not something I am too worried about. I am using the Wendler 531 routine because my goal for 2011 is to get my squat up. I am a fan of the 531 set up though as it simple to follow, seems to work pretty well, and, damn, if you want to get your squat up, then Jim Wendler is as good a guy to take advice from as any.

Awesome.  All the old guys are doing 531.  I did it for 6 months while I went through hell in my family life.  Simple to follow, felxible so it's not too time consuming.  And you get results.  I did the just north of vag template :)

I am with lance on this.  The technique of every test is coached in such detail that you can shave .2 - .3 off a 40 in less than an hour.  You cannot finnesse your way into a good vertical jump.  You just need raw power.  You dont creep the line, big step, stare at this point, keep your lean, dont pop up but step out, etc... to a good jump.  I have seen hip dominant jumpers jump 36+ and quad dominant jump 36+.  it is more about horsepower than anything.

Just like you never said to squat with bad form I never said to "never squat to parallel".  All I was saying was a couple key points

1.  Based on his Squat and DL remarks it sounds as if he is losing neutral spine (aka bad form)
2.  He should only squat as low as he can while maintaining neutral (perfect form) regardless of depth.

If he is loading his ES and hams then he is probably in lordosis/anterior tilt.  Low ab strengthening should help along with going as low as possible while using perfect technique.  If you recall I also said that OVER TIME he should be able to get deeper and deeper.

He shouldn;t get to parallel just to get to parallel, he should get there while getting the right muscles to fire while doing the right job

As stated befor you are probably dropping out of neutral into lordosis.  Most likely the low abs are giving out as you get lower.  Low ab work (non-tripod) coupled with squatting just until you lose glute function (ie they turn off) and coming up should lead to better glute recruitment over time.

Also dont get obsessed about parallel.  Only go as low as you can properly.  Over time you should be able to get deeper and deeper.

interesting regarding the calves.  west noted that his sprinters lost ankle stiffness.  maybe they were generating more force and did not develop stiffness in relation to the speed/force improvements.  west mentioned that as a result he began adding in the low squat foot jump to fix this.

how many positions were you doing a day and which ones.

I have also noticed a ton of glute recruitment when you go back to normal lifting.  your ass really lights up.  I began using extreme isos and the wgf core progressions as my gpp phase and it seems pretty effective.

i should add that i do the ghr differently than schrieder.  in pics of his people they hold with the hip bent and knee bent.  we keep the hips locked and focus on firing the glutes to drive the hips forward and pulling up on the pelvis with the lower abs.  the knees are bent at a 45 degree angle.  in essence you are at the worst biomechanical position.

we do them this way because it really hammers home how to use your abs to control pelvic position.

this has had a ton of transfer onto the track and field of play.  everyone wants to let the butt kick out.  this shuts the glutes off on the exercise and turns it into a hamstring driven movement versus teaching the glutes to drive the hips

you mentioned the golfer's performance dropped big after she stopped doing the isos for that tournament or something.. if it was due to the isos, then wouldn't that go against schroeder's ideas on how permanent the adaptations become?

I'll see what I can dig up, no guarantees though.  I have moved on from state and now help the sharks part tme and spend the other time working on trying to make a profitable website

Yes that would contradict Schroeders claim but... his athletes do extreme isos year round so maybe the results aren;t that permanent, or maybe i could have seen her bonking if we monitored her bowel movements.

I have added a podcast about Extreme Isometrics at my website.  It is a 20 minute exclusive podcast to site members.  To join my site and receive a link to the podcast you can visit

http://www.evolutionaryathletics.com

You can opt out at any time and, if you ask any members, I do not blow up email addresses with spam and jumk

What are extreme isometrics?

They form the cornerstone of Jay Schroeders training system.  Jay emerged on the seen with the amazing training programs that Adam Archuletta performed.  Extreme Isos claims have been extraordinary to say the least.  You will learn about their performance, the claimed benefits, the benefits my athletes have seen, and the different manners I have used to incorporate them over the past Two Years.

Oh and Andrew I did not monitor my athletes bowel movements so dont ask :)
