Progress Journals & Experimental Routines / Re: chasing athleticism
« on: November 19, 2014, 11:09:42 am »
Well....depends...do you want to squat big or be athletic? Obviously a big squat relative to BW is beneficial but theres so many other ways to be athletic.  Look at my numbers in the weight room, they're all down from PRs (some substantially) but my vert is at PR levels IMO. Im sure im not the only example, Kilganon comes to mind reallll fast.

No lie. Id rate it over any other dunk ive ever had. Windmills, reverses, the one 360 I got real clean...all of them. Just because it was in game and I dunked it hard. I was stunned for a second lol! Every time I try to dunk that hard I back iron it or something. Guess the game adrenaline added some inches lol!

Had a mini 45 minute dunk session this morning.  Gym had no heat...left sweats and hoodie on and still barely broke a sweat. :/ destroyed my right middle finger on the rim with about 10 mins left so I tried a bunch of simple left handed dunks. Ended up getting a couple cleanly. :)

Didnt get to lift or play yesterday due to life stuff. Good news tho...im sitting here watching tv with my princess!!!! So thankful!

Played today to check the ankle/foot. Feels fine. BW is up to 176-178ish. Gta watch the food intake. But...game was good today. Jumper was money. And was really flying it felt like. Easy dunks between games even off a 'hop' instead of a max jump. Soo damn close to a pump reverse off the dribble. I can taste it. Windmills off dribble are becoming more frequent but still rare. Had a MONSTER facial in one game. Ended the game for about 10 mins lol! Loose ball scramble and I came up with it at the top of the key, defender just off the block was about 6'1 and id seen him trying to dunk before so I knew I had to get up. Two dribbles and got UP. Big one hander and the foul as he tried to push me away from the rim with his off hand, other hand only got up to about my elbow. No chance. Kinda surprised I controlled it as hard as I dunked it. :D

I dont have the links but good god almighty...Kilganon is KKILLING EVERYONE right now. Just saw on Facebook the 'Scorpion' and a damn arm in the rim 360. This kid is getting shit out of hand. My lord. Someone find a damn link cuz FB is being shitty as usual lol

Yea somewhere in my head I know that. I just get sucked in when there's a game being played. Sigh. Doesn't help that I dont want to sit around the house lol! Ive been icing it 2x daily and doing some stretches through out the day and it seems to be responding decently.  Definitely feels better this morning.  Im hoping by next weekend to be near 100% if not all the way recovered.

Today was fun. Had to go to the doctor for a routine checkup and I guess the combination of my nerves, not eating and my absolute fear of needles came to a perfect head....passed the hell out while having blood drawn. Super weird feeling.

Got bored/lonely at the house so I said to hell with it and wrapped my ankle and went to just shoot around....wrong. gym was packed. Ended up playing 3 games and played very well again. Once warm the ankle feels fine, cuts, jumping, accel/decel all feel good. Still sore once im cooled off and put just the right amount of pressure in the wrong direction tho. So more ice. Just figured id update. Don't think its too bad since I could move and play on it.

173 today. Went and played and was lights out. Couldnt miss at all. Moves were crisp. Handle was tight. Had 3 different guys "broke", so bad he was 6 foot away and facing the basket while I was shooting the triple. Gah. Wish I could play like this all the time!!!

Had two dunks.  First was weak...backdoor easy one hander. 2nd was much better. Clean baseline two hander.

Bad thing is I landed on someones foot next game. Pretty sure its a mild sprain. Was able to play on it but its sore sore sore now that im cooled down. Ice for sure.

Good news, I know some of you all have said I make jumping look 'easy' well at 173 it FEELS easy. So quick off the floor today. :)

Thanks for the thoughts and support guys, means a lot. Sadly my bw is down to 174 now. Not how I envisioned getting here. I have to force myself to eat some not just pick at shit. Gna make it through this and somehow I'll be better for it.

Edit: fuck. I wrote out the edit...didnt save. Cliff notes...check last monday squat workout. Failed 345 once and re tried,  got it. Bodyweight was shitty, energy was worse, just frustration.  Not good for focusing on weights. Got a good quad pump tho somehow and made me smile a little. Warmup jumps were surprising,  very bouncy. Must be loss of bw. Was getting ~30-31" of a~18" depth jump.

Annnnd it deleted original post lol! Oh well. It was a depressing post.

Sigh. I played again Sunday. All I did last week. Well...correction...I drove around Sunday night and wound up at a bar. First alcoholic beverages I've had in over 3 years. Needless to say I feel like shit today which is basically how I've felt for the past 2 weeks. I just want to hold my daughter but my ex is a class A bitch. Hopefully the lawyers can make something happen soon. I need to go lift,  I need to go release this pent up aggression. Maybe I will. Idk.

Good news is depression lowers bodyweight. I was at 176 Thursday but I look like shit composition wise.

Played some Sunday. Full court for 3 hours with some good players (local college guys and some buddies in on fall break plus some good hs kids, great runs). Played ok by my standards,  tried to be more of a facilitator considering the talent/skill around me and ended up with some damn nice assists if I say so myself lol! Had one game where we just weren't hitting as a squad so I had to ratchet it up a notch and dropped a 3, pull up j, fastbreak layup and another 3 in succession.  Last 3 came after I put a guy on the ground with a crossover> hesitation> stepback move. Completely hyped my team and we came back and won that game. :)

Skipped this mornings squat workout to try and figure some stuff out. Will definitely squat tonight. Too much going on so im trying to keep active so I dont slip into depression. Thinking is very bad right now.

Also...not on vid but...got a ehh 360, a lob off the side of the backboard and back ironed an oop from the 3rd hash. Ive never tried jumping far so it surprised the hell out of me...and scared me lol! I was leaning and it felt like I was falling in the air. But, it gives me some fun stuff to work on. :)

Didnt put in original post because it doesnt count...not on vid lol

Having a horrible week and have skipped workouts over and over. Just getting ran over.  So I said F it and went to hoop. Went with a buddy who is in from school (hes a junior, just transferred to a D1 school in NC from JUCO, just landed the starting pg spot!) And shot around while he did some plyos and then we dunked. Well, I coached him a little and threw lobs lol! He's 6'1 and so damn close to getting it consistent.  Anyways...I rammed a few for motivation when he seemed to get tired. Got a big mill but no one was recording it. Did get this short clip in between hos attempts...

Felt awesome and fresh having done nothing since Tuesday when I did some skill work lol

Monday October 27 2014 (9am)

BW at 178 this morning, 179 post breakfast/pre workout.
Energy was good, clean breakfast definitely helped there.

-bike+dynamic warmups+jumps

-squats! (Banded as usual)
(Warmups) bar x 5, 135x5, 225x3,  295x1, 345x1.
(Worksets) 295x5, 295x5, 295x5, 295x5. Decided to make a change. Ive been pissed at my lack of depth and progress lately so I reset down 20lbs and made sure everything was ATG not to parallel.  Will try to build back up. These were nice and explosive though :)

-stepups:
120lbs: x10, x10, x10. (Per leg so 30 reps on each side)

-calf raise on leg press:
550lbs: x12, x12, x12.  Ok....so these were way easier than last week. I actually looked to see if I had the right weight loaded lol! If they are this easy next session I'll add weight. Side note: calves do look shredded today. Cool.

-hypers :
45lbs : x12, x12, x12.  Iso hold at the top kills glutes.

-banded jump 1/4 squat:
135lbs: x5, x5, x5.  Listened to KF, backed off and fpcused on explosion and power.  Good sets.

Light lunges, core work to finish. Very good session.
