Peer Reviewed Studies Discussion / Re: Vertical Jump
« on: July 04, 2011, 04:49:43 pm »

There are a ton of factors that all come into play here, and they can also be changed through different types of training, some for better, some for worse.

One thing that I have noticed simply through years of observation is athletes with a very long tibia relative to the femur will not have the same "weak" spot that athletes with longer femur to tibial ratios, and can descend further without a loss of power in the svj.  These same athletes seem to be able to get more of the hips into any jump they do as the length of the shorter femur pivoting around a longer tibia is advantageous for that extra depth without moving the center of mass too far away from the fulcrum.

This is only one of many factors, but this type of athlete will actually benefit from a little deeper gather during the jump, dee brown looks to be a pretty good example of this.  It would definitely be interesting to see some good studies done on it.

Progress Journals & Experimental Routines / Re: THE DREAM JOURNAL

Dreamed that I was in India having a seminar with Rippetoe. And he asked me to put in a 3 kg orange plate, transparent, with some "bubbles" in it on a barbell. Then he comes in and asks me why that plate isn't 3 kg (it's heavier or lighter than 3 kg).

And I invent something and he turns to his audience and says "see, this guy hasn't read my book". And he takes me by the shoulder and walks me to a marketplace where they were selling honey. And I'm like "oh, yeah, it's because the density is different!". And he's happy with that answer, but suddenly he becomes a thin, light Indian man (120 lbs or so) with a moustache and faints. And I was with a playboy model or something. The Indian cops come in and I'm like "it's your turn to roll" (to the girl) and she tries to show her tits in a way or anther to the cops to let us leave.

The end.

and for lance:

bahahahahhahahahahahahah!!!! nice job man lmfao

note- this pic shows the gynomonster DURING the first part of his first pull, hes not just reaching down to grab the bar....... pulling the bar off the floor in this manner may result in gynocomastia, the development of a "fupa", and extreme mastery of sports knowledge and Mark Rippetoes extremely  "witty" quotes.

What I meant is - he's missing the point about DUNKING. He's like "hm... I have a bad approach when it comes to dunking".

"Maybe I should do long jumps in the sand pit, jumps over boxes at higher speeds, this, that". How about just using a longer approach to ACTUAL DUNKS?!

ah, I thought he was wanting to long jump.  But for sure, practicing the actual event of dunking  is going to help out a lot more.

The long jumps will help the single leg jump a ton though but you still need to take it to the court to convert.  Triple jumps will help the hell out of the speed youre able to approach with in the single leg jump just from getting insanely good at absorbing force and putting it back out.  Just make sure you do plenty of actual dunking and bounding for max HEIGHT as well. Get the best of both worlds that way.

Hes got potential in those events if he wants to pursue them and compete unattached or something at a meet eventually.

ADARQ & LanceSTS - Q&A / Re: Weight lifting shoes

VS athletics shoes are very good training shoes. The end.

some of this shit is making me sick, people squatting less than 300lbs obsessed with 1/1000 of an inch heel height and bashing a shoe.  Get some weightlifting shoes, squat and get strong.

Ok. I'm good with short approaches i need to transition to longer run-ups... I'm also running very slow into my jump, not only at lj but also in dunking. My 2 legged approaches are basically svj with one small drop step :(

Sorry but "logical logic" calls for you to actually start to do longer approach 2 footed dunks and try to increase speed on them gradually if that's the aim.

I think one way other than doing this ^^^ is to go with hurdle hops, say 3 hurdles, starting with a small hurdle and finishing with a tall hurdle.

He just said "im good with short approaches i need to transition to longer run-ups".  Which would imply he knows that he needs to work on longer approaches. Maybe I missed something?

863

First one looks good, I wouldnt spend too much time on those type drills right now if you are wanting to long jump, I would get really good at short approaches, get your steps down pat, make sure youre getting as much of the board as possible,  then gradually move to a longer approach.

On the second video, or any single leg drop jumps, make sure to push off the box slightly with the trailing foot when you leave the box.  Otherwise youre basically just taking a slightly exaggerated step and not really falling from a greater height.

i was wondering about that, yes that is far more impressive and i wanna see dirky have ago now

I'm more scared of a needle and injection than of a barbell.

^^ cool story bro.  I saw an aardvark humping a turtle once .  Just throwing out some more random stuff that has nothing to do with the posts.

Training with barbells is not illegal or against any rules, its an even playing field, but one that takes actual BALLS to do.

Quote
Why?

You cant seriously be this dumb. Why isnt it illegal to jump, or run, or fish? Youre seriously confused on the difference between performing athletic movements against resistance and shoving a 20 gauge needle filled with synthetic hormones into your glutes?

Quote
You need BALLS to break the rules.

cheating is COWARDLY, anyone who actually has BALLS already knows this.

Then do a drug-free athletic world and a drug-pro athletic world. I'd love to see a steroid-filled sprinter that runs 9.30. Even in the drug-free world, it's just a matter of not getting caught. There probably are compounds that just don't show up in the analysis. If you have the money, you have them and you're a gold medalist]

Right, so since YOU want to see it, lets not let the actual ATHLETES WHO HAVE TO MAKE THAT DECISION TO USE DRUGS have a say in it. Your entertainment is more important than what they wish to put in their body.

Quote
It's going to happen nonetheless ^^^

brilliant! Youre saying there are already athletes using drugs in sports illegally? HOLY SHIT, this is revolutionary!

Quote
Maybe I don't want to train and put my back, knees, bones, heck, even life to a risk under a heavy barbell. How about then? Or it's just about balls?

Then there are lots of other things you can do, get the fuck out of the athletic world or stop being a giant pussy.  Problem solved.

EDIT: I have a feeling Lance will take this message personally like he usually does when someone is contradicting his opinion, but... 8)

nope.  I agree with what garys last post said, I dont like cheaters, and I dont like athletes being forced into a situation to have to take any drug just to compete.  We spend a ton of time learning how to train correctly so that we can do things and help and others do things beyond what was possible, without breaking any laws or rules.

Its also very funny how magic you think steroids are, you need to come to texas and see the 10,000 frat boys benching 185 that have been juicing for 5 plus years straight.  There are a lot more weak as fuck, non athletic peons on steroids than there are elite athletes using them.

He has insane genetics plus a diet consisting of mostly raw meat from different species of high grade cattle. couple that with his elite tendon attachments, and you have a bosshog.

If you are debating whether or not steroids should be legalized, then you have some ground to stand on there, if you are comparing taking steroids to training with weights, its a silly comparison.  You cant compare sticking a needle in your ass to spending years and years busting your ass under a barbell.  Training with barbells is not illegal or against any rules, its an even playing field, but one that takes actual BALLS to do.  The main reason taking steroids is an advantage in the first place is because not everyone is willing to break the rules and cheat, so the ones that do actually have an advantage.

The people who get affected by steroids in sports are the ATHLETES, that want to stay clean, but have to compete against cheaters who have a clear advantage in their training.  If they are made legal then you have a level playing field, but many athletes dont want to literally be forced into taking drugs to play their sport and compete in their event, which is what that would entail.  Its easy to look from the outside in like many do and say there is no problem with drugs, but when its your job to compete, and YOU ARE FOLLOWING THE RULES, and you get beat by someone who IS BREAKING THE RULES, then its a different story.

I dont agree with many of the drug policies regarding recreational drugs and the what Gary said about alcohol is very true, but two wrongs dont make a right.  I dont like steroids in sports, it causes things like threads on starting strength about "why usa weightlifters arent strong", when some athletes have to stay cleaner than others, and the ones using get to come out looking like they are "better".

Bottom line is rules are rules, and if youre playing a sport that has rules, you should have enough dignity to stay within those boundaries or do something else.  Most the people talking about steroids arent even anywhere close to a point that they couldnt make tons more progress if they knew how to train right or trained hard enough anyway.

Those tables are pretty clear on what novice, intermediate, advanced, and elite mean, and pretty accurate for full lifts without gear.  Between Pendlay, Rippetoe, and Kilgore, I would imagine they have a pretty decent handle on what constitutes what for the different categories.

Untrained

Expected level of strength in a healthy individual who has not trained on the exercise before but can perform it correctly. This represents the minimum level of strength required to maintain a reasonable quality of life in a sedentary individual.

Novice

A person training regularly for a period of 3-9 months. This strength level supports the demands of vigorous recreational activities.

Intermediate

A person who has engaged in regular training for up to two years. The intermediate level indicates some degree of specialization in the exercises and a high level of performance at the recreational level.

Lance, Andrew

I'd like to know your thoughts on improving core power aside from compound exercises.
I feel my core is my weak point and am doing my barbell rollouts/med ball throws religiously, but I haven't been seeing much progression in these exercises though; I can still only do a barbell rollout kneeled (about 20 easy) and am still at the same ammount of med ball throws 'till failure.

What's your oppinion on the progression of these lifts? The core contains the same type of muscles your whole body does, so progressive resistance and gradually more difficult exercses seems best to me.
I'd like to be able to do a standing barbell rollout and have found a couple of good video's, but I'd like to know your oppinion first.

In conclusion, doing compound lifitng requires a huge ammount of core work, but I think sufficient additional core work (more than the barbell rollouts + med ball throws) or even a 'core day' wouldn't be such a bad idea.

Thoughts?

First off, agree with on you progressing core specific exercises for sure, too many people doing the same exact resistance, same exact intensity over and over, if they even do it at all.

IMO, the single best way to progress the rollouts once you can go all the way out on knees is to start standing, but only a short distance away from a wall, that will stop the barbell or wheel for you at your desired range of motion.  The end point is the "hardest" part, so when you have a wall there it makes coming back up much easier, while you still get all the benefits of the eccentric going through a longer range of motion than you could otherwise.  Have some way to gauge your progress (distance from wall), and slowly but surely move the distance a little further and a little further back over time.  Soon you will be doing full rom rollouts.

be sure and remember to dig in and activate the lower abdominal area and psoas as well, its a huge difference in overall strength if youre not doing this already.  (the motion is similar to a leg raise against the floor.)
