pretty sure FDL wasn't expecting a neg bomb with a POST like that lmao.

possible reasons for neg bomb:
- posting in the "News & Announcements" section

:ninja:

IMHO, that post is fine & i'm personally happy to see you contributing so much now, instead of just beef'n (like way back :d) .. but this is probably the wrong section. Going to move it to "Strength, Power, Reactivity, & Speed Discussion".

Also, i'd argue AGAINST the "bottom of the bell curve" statement .. most people on here come from the "average" part of the spectrum, with some components (coordination, strength, body comp) above or below, but everything evening out to "average". Then through hard work they get past avg and move upwards. "Bottom of the bell curve" to me means REALLY unathletic - serious coordination issues, major weaknesses, very soft/mushy. That's what i'd picture if someone used that to describe someone athletically. This forum hasn't had too much of that. For example, this one ~16 year old I tested once during a H.S. football clinic was of "normal build" and literally had a 4" vertical jump. It was pretty astonishing.. That's really rare. To me, that's the part of the spectrum you're describing. But regardless, that's kind of left up to interpretation.

As for myself, i'd say i'm NATURALLY:
- well above average on coordination
- above average on endurance
- average on strength, power, speed
- average on flexibility
- more subjective: below average on body composition (skinny fat)

I managed to get myself:
- coordination no change
- well above average on endurance
- well above average on strength, power, speed
- above average on flexibility until I hurt myself working on flexibility
- more subjective: well above average on body composition (lean + muscle - "athletic physique")

so overall, i've probably made "well above average" gains at certain stages of my athletic training, ie great gains .. most likely not "excellent gains". Excellent gains would probably have come if I had stayed more consistent for much longer, without getting hurt - which for dunking, I don't think would have happened. Seemed like I was really pushing the limit relative to my own limits.. kinda got a little scary sometimes toward the end. Looking back, I should have just backed off some and stagnated for a while, but it's hard for my brain to shift into that gear, especially when I was training so hard to progress. So that was a big mistake on my part.

My biggest athletic achievements:

1. Boxing (2005-2007.5)

Went into a boxing gym without ever having boxed before, and within two years was sparring in multiple gyms against all kinds of fighters, and was invited to train by Howard Davis Jr to his "Afternoon session", where he trained most of his pro boxers & pro mma fighters. IMHO, i've always had the boxing ability, seems like a very natural skill I have - just really slick, defensive, and can think fast with decent hand speed, so actually getting good with boxing wasn't too surprising. The achievement here is actually getting in there and fighting people who everyone is trying to coach to kill you. When I went to gyms (Warriors/ATT), everyone was coaching against me. Most times i'd be in the corner by myself between rounds. It was really odd.. To top it off, they mostly had me sparring guys who were like 170+ and here I am at mid 140's. Anyway, that took some damn guts IMHO. Wrecking my hand ended all of that.

2. Vertical Jump / Dunking (2009-2012)

Long story short, went from not dunking to crushing some dunks. Peak vert near 40", but I won't say 40", probably more like 38-39". Vertec official (well before peak vert) @ 36.5". That was for DLRVJ. For L-SLRVJ, probably got to 36-37" on a few jumps, that was a surprise at the end .. L-SLRVJ just "appeared", was kind of nuts. Half squat 405 x 1 @ < 150 & rested max 315 x 5 @ 145 or so. Definitely pushed it hard as fu*k during the vert years.

Also hit 225 x 45 half squat off pins (could have kept going, actually stopped on purpose) @ ~150 or so? That's just a demo of the strength/endurance/power I built to jump. Legs were bionic at that time.

3. Running (2016)

Don't have any official times when I boxed, but I got myself into insane shape during those years: literally 2-3 hours of cardio per day. Sub 5 mile & 18:XX 5k based on my measurements but I used things like mapmyrun & a stopwatch to measure, no track work. So really no idea if it was actually accurate. I'd imagine it was as good or a little better than my recent running addiction, where I got to low 18's 5k and low 5's mile. I was also way leaner when I boxed.

So aside from the boxing years, ~2016 became the running years. Got my official 5k down from 22:xx to 18:22? Just PR's everywhere. That was fun, really pushed it until eventually I got an injury doing LSD (long slow distance - lame shit).

4. Current: running part III & jumping part III.

who knows :D

If I had stayed completely consistent with jumping/running, id probably have reached alot closer to my ultimate goals. All of these "patches" are definitely a problem. Inconsistency, but more "changing my mind", becoming obsessed with "new things", is my biggest weakness. I guess i've always been like that.. I can go hard for years then eventually I get interested in something else and boom, just change things up completely. It can be good, but also bad. That seems to be more of a personality flaw+feature that exists throughout all aspects of my life, not just athletics.

WVN is a beast. :ibrunning:

That dude who came from last place in the last ~80m to finish 3rd was pretty incredible too, what a finish.

800m final & pole vault was pretty dope too.

Nice, they will be showing it on the bbc channels and online. Excited. Bolt not doing the 200m as he sees the risk of losing it is quite high. Should be exciting.

100m prospects: degrasse, gatlin (little to some chance), yohan blake recovering well, new american talent and usain bolt.

Then you have van neekirk and his blasting away the competitions in the 400m and breaking records. I don't see kirani james or the american guy keeping up with him.

I bet Bolt is kicking himself now after the 100m. Bolt is a phenomenal 100m sprinter but to me his 200m has always been where he is the standout as nobody can match his top speed and speed maintenance. However, most importantly getting a bad start is a lot less detrimental in the 200m in comparison to the 100 because you have the time to make up. Despite the loss Bolt is a legend.

I personally don't care at all if he lost, doesn't tarnish him at all IMHO. I mean it sucks but, I respect him more that he tried, rather than walking off into the sunset - i'm weird like that it seems. I guess I just like to see people keep competing as long as they are able AND they want to compete - the idea of retiring early just to walk off with some story book ending has always bugged me, in every sport.

I wish he did the 200m. He'd probably walk away with a W in 200m and 3rd in 100m. Played it somewhat safe by only doing 100m and now he doesn't have a chance to end it in the event he probably had the better chance to win, especially with Degrasse out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wk_EAQooa24

it's a fair question for sure.. maybe not to bolt/gatlin/coleman in that moment, but, definitely a fair question overall.. times were getting insane, everyone running under 9.8, with 9.7's and 9.6's, even 9.5's for bolt.. all of that "fire" seemed to disappear. Now, a 9.8 and even a low 9.9 is back to winning everything.

so many people over the years got busted, including Tyson Gay & Gatlin himself, as well as several of Bolt's teammates.

Bolt's response was a bit over the top..

I still hope he's clean.

http://www.alltime-athletics.com/m_100ok.htm

Also, Blake kinda just "shows up" in 2012.. :ninja:

Yeah I can understand the frustration though. Ever since the Ben Johnson saga the results have always been overshadowed with suspicion.

Blake got a suspension early in his career for using stimulants. He really came out of the shadows in 2011 when he won the World Champs after Bolt's infamous false start. Unfortunately for Blake he's just had a tumultuous time with injuries and as a sprinter to get to your peak you need to be injury free and sustain that. Michael Johnson apart from his speed and being up until recently the world's greatest 200/400m sprinter in history was very fortunate in that he was durable and didn't have many injuries along the way.

With regards to Gatlin of course I agree that it's a pity he has used PEDs in the past. However, you've got to admire his resilience to come back after 2 doping bans and still being a force in his mid 30's. A lot of other people would've received a 4 year ban and given it all away and nobody would blame them.

yup. def!

Definitely! We can't all have fairly tale endings haha.

The 200m will be deadly! :headbang:

they keep comparing WVN to Bolt, which is annoying... but, 400/200 dominance by WVN could allow WVN to slip right into that gap that Bolt just left wide open.. If Bolt would have run 200m and beat WVN, that'd be a good closing touch on his career, now that WVN is taking off.

200m is going to be dope.. i'd love to see WVN pull out a win and become this 200/400 guy :D

This is a good article on the Justin Gatlin story:

http://www.sportsintegrityinitiative.com/demonising-justin-gatlin/

Takeaways: the first ban was explainable/excusable, should never have gotten a record based on the evidence. The second offense was bizarre and could plausibly have been sabotage, but impossible to prove unless the guy came forward. As the article says: he had several tests around the positive test all come back clean, why would he randomly use test in the middle of the season? Very odd pattern. Also, without the bogus first test he wouldn't have gotten four years.

Also, it's not completely unreasonable that he could have a second career peak based on the fact he took a four-year break from the sport. It's naive to think most top-level sprinters don't experiment around the edges heavily, but the response against Gatlin when compared to Blake, Powell, Gay etc. is over the top! Embarrassing to see him booed and it was pretty cool to see him literally silence the critics.

...I just wish he hadn't beaten Bolt

ooh nice. going to give that a read tmw.

on a side note: seems like people who are willing to cheat should get into business or politics :/ :ninja: there it's respected.

something about "paying dues" that doesn't work anymore ... ie serving a ban and no one cares. "Once a cheat, always a cheat." Yet, fairweather fans want to keep the WR's keep dropping or they get bored with the sport/performances.

booing someone when they win like that, is pretty dirty.. i mean, they don't know if they are doping or not - but still boo.. at least let them have a moment without booing, maybe just less cheers without the boos.. but pretty disrespectful to boo at that moment.

sorry bout to sleep, typing sucks.

For me, it happens straight away like first few reps, I have to like force myself to come up on my toes. Don't know it happens.

ah damn.. dno really, could be so many diff things I guess. I'd just keep trying to focus on maintaining form (manually) and maybe try to strengthen the peroneals more.

« on: August 08, 2017, 02:30:18 pm »
had to drop some adarq blessing in some facebook dunk thread w/ a bunch of people/pro dunkers whining about push offs & props:

Quote
Andrew Darqui Some prop dunks are pretty sick. Some (non-blatant) push off dunks are pretty sick. Absolutely every dunker i've watched has dunked on low rims at some point, whether it's in an actual contest or in some dunk mix. If someone isn't as creative or "original", they might steal a dunk. If someone doesn't have as much vert as his competitors, he might rely more on props or some boosts. If dunkers are competing on the same hoop, it all evens out in the end. Most fans aren't purists & most judges are clueless: those are the constraints. Dunkers who are purists themselves are great for the sport, I mean they keep it grounded & are good role models. But it can also be a slippery slope, purists tend to inject alot of negativity into those things that they love when they see youngins/outsiders encroaching. It's starting to look like a battle between the "purists" and the "progressives", typical evolution of sport I imagine - purists normally lose though, so be careful to not deprecate yourselves. As for me personally, I guess i'm finding it more annoying seeing a few dunkers and a few negative but not accomplished "hater-dunkers" fuel this debate even more than it should be fueled, turning it into some futile campaign that won't actually end well but will instead just cause alot of fissures. The dunk game has evolved & improved considerably over the last 10 years, fact - not opinion. peace.

Cals: 2750 (156c, 57s, 126f, 181p)
2 hrs light ultimate pickup
45 min moderate intensity jog with some ME sprints at the end

I strained my left psoas during the ME sprints.. I was in runners high and they felt effortless and super fast.. this was dumb

Sprints were also w/o brace, knee feels janky today. On the plus side back feels fine.

Cals: 3820 (290c, 154s, 251f, 195p): woke up 3am with a crazy sugar craving.. chugged 4 servings milk, ate processed snacks.

BP:
185 x5
155 8,8,7F (short rests)

pause DB press (60s rests):
35's 4x12

5 mins leg stretches

Pullups 10, 8, 8

Lat pulldowns (60s rest):

12.5's 2x12

Core circuit (60s):
-crunches x20

dammit that sucks. how bad is the psoas strain? that sh*t can become chronic fairly easily, don't wreck it.

When doing calf raises, do you ever get that situation when you are going on to the balls of the feet, the feet rotates outwards and you find yourself doing calf raises using the outer half of your feet. How do you fix it if it is a problem? maybe if you point both toes inwards?

me personally? nope.. I don't know of any corrective magic for it, but, if you can do say 10-20 reps with proper form, then it slips into that inverted form, sounds purely like some muscle weakness going on, which is better than some structural issue.

pointing toes inwards could help but, i'd imagine you could actively engage internal rotators of hip, adductors of thigh, and focus on plantar flexing neutral, through the big toe. I mean if you're peroneals are weak, I imagine that could be the culprit. Not sure if direct peroneal work (with bands) would have much of an effect.. single leg lateral plank is better at targeting the peroneals imho, but muscles at the hip seem to fatigue quicker.

some dynamic strengthening exercises for it could be side to side single leg line hops (minimal vertical emphasis, just side to side low hops over a line).. should set them on fire if they are weak.
