Progress Journals & Experimental Routines / Re: acole14's journal
« on: July 13, 2020, 10:39:26 pm »
I can't believe it's been this long since I posted in my own journal :o. It's been a turbulent year and a half life-wise. Obviously covid-19 has been totally disruptive to everything, and I've had a bunch of other demands on top of that: two kids now, terrible first job out of PhD, better second job but required a relocation (luckily we just moved in time before Covid shut down everything for the first time in Victoria, Aus).

I have been exercising but not seriously training. Every stat is obviously very low. I am eternally inspired by Coges training at a high level into his 40s with kids, and I want to get back into some form of regimented training, but I have no idea what. Considering doing more running but I am not naturally good at longer stuff, and it would be a time-intensive activity to get near the levels of adarq, LBSS, vag, and the other runners (you're all very impressive btw), which I think would make it more motivating. No gym time either at the moment, but that could be something - I am wary about gyms now though, even once we're out of lockdown #2 in Victoria (the only Aus state to relapse so far). I'm posting just to make sure I keep pushing forward with ideas, otherwise I will definitely slip even more. I'd like to be an active dad with whatever sports the kids want to do eventually (I'm praying it's not soccer), so staying fit is a priority.

whoa awesome. congrats on the kids man!

you made some big life changes lol. nice!

as for training during covid.. ya, running is great. whether it be endurance or sprints etc, getting fresh air (hopefully away from people) and putting in some work is the way to go. so many more people running now than before covid, it's funny & cool. :ibrunning:

forget going into gyms for a long while.. :o

just get consistent w/ something u enjoy & have fun. :ninja:

- run 19.6 km in 1:42:16
accidental distance PR, first time over 12 miles. ran a mile longer than intended because my mom (who biked along with me) and i got separated just before the halfway/turnaround point and i looped around to look for her. waited for ten minutes at the fork where we must have gotten split up and then came back. we just missed each other and ended up arriving home within ten minutes of each other. so also a lot faster cumulatively than last week (5:13 average pace), thanks in no small part to my being worried/irritated that i'd lost my mom, lol.

- stretch

tired.

nice!

and damn lol. stuff like that can be nerve-racking. brings back nightmares of losing my mom in the mall as a kid growing up hah. 8|

lol, reminds me of the old level 7 training ideas thread.

lool.

hahahah level 7: WHERE'S MY MOMMY?!?!?!?!

yea exactly, lmao.

bw = 146

feel good

run:
- 3 hours mixed surfaces (dirt/grass/sand/rocks/asphalt), 1 hour walk
- a few stops mixed in, in the 3 hours (call from co-worker, taking photos, etc)

- ran in an area i'm looking at houses .. ~1 hour from me, ~45 min from work. more north, more farmy. lots of state parks, tons of trails, pretty nice

- when i get there, some cyclist (Bill) likes me running in my cowboy hat, so he says "nice running hat!", so instead of him just keep going, we talk a bit as i was running and him cycling. talked for like 5 min then separate ways. cool tho, nice guy. lol.

- ran passed this dude selling watermelons (William) a few times. He'd always give me the thumbs up and say something positive.. so at the end im actually walking back and i was dehydrated as fu*k. he saw me and offered me an unopened bottle of water. so i took it, we spoke for a bit, then i told him i'd be back to get a watermelon.

- about 30 min later i come back w/ my car and buy a watermelon. he was cracking up, here we are in the pouring rain, me w/ a cowboy hat & eating the watermelon w/ a combat knife. he took a photo of it, probably posted it on his fb or something. anyway was funny. good dude.

- mostly very positive experiences when i run in "country folk" areas. lots of polite people. always enjoy that.

picture of the watermelon:

i ate half of it. was good. just what i needed. ears were completely "popped" from lack of fluids, and throat was dry as fuck. lost > 10 lb water. eeeeh.

feel good now, other than calves/feet cramping randomly.

ate a ton of salt/sugar/rehydrated almost completely etc.

didn't see the fight but seemed like a dominant performance from Usman, based on the stats. Tough for Masvidal coming into that on such short notice.

also this made me lol:

some solid AELS to report.

2020-07-09:
- planned rest
- bumped inside of knee on chair.. tender. so took the next day off as well

2020-07-10:
- forced rest
- knee felt fine
- bumped it again on a chair, but on the outside .. actually became very painful - tendinitis-ish feeling
- forced myself to take the next 2 days rest

2020-07-11:
- forced rest

2020-07-08:
- forced rest

lol.

feel great now.. plan to run tomorrow morning (13th). going to run in an area that i've been looking at, for a potential house etc. lots of huge parks/trails/lakes/canals there. 45 min from work but, could be worth it.

proud of myself for being able to rest so easy now.. when i was in runner-grind mode, i'd have run through both of those stupid tweaks. :derp:

need to stop bumping my knee tho.. out of nowhere i bump it 2 days in a row. wtf. 8|

400m Sprinting or Shorter / Re: Sprint Videos
« on: July 10, 2020, 08:24:53 pm »
Noah lyles smashes bolts 200m WR but later finds out it was 180m.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CC3UJL5hKlw

that's nuts.. but odd that the other two went over 20. i'd be confused too if i saw lyles go under 19, and those other two going over 20. both should be capable of going under 20 at 180m.

crazy lmao.

yeah and it ended up not storming last night, pissed that i didn't go. you're prob right that it's smarter not to make it up. what i think i'll do instead is long run today, skip tomorrow, then back on schedule from wednesday. the long runs are important, i think i get more out of them than the 10-11k's. this way i'll still get that in but not sacrifice a recovery day.

speaking of which, it's time to lengthen those as well. sub-50 minutes just doesn't seem like enough stimulus anymore, especially if i'm able to maintain that in the heat and humidity. will shift to 11k minimum from this week.

nice!

and yup. one good long run once per week works so good. love the way i feel after a long run -> light af, lungs "cleared out", loose/relaxed/dead tired etc.

i think 1.5 hours is probably the sweet spot for most people. i mean that'll get you some great gains. 1 hour is good but can be too little. 2 hours is great but can be too much etc. 1.5 hours is a good compromise.

something else i've been musing on: i'd like to find a training partner. in normal times i'd be thinking about joining a club (as i would have done this spring in london). maybe still worth doing that just to get plugged into a little network here.

nice. weird time to do it but im sure you can find some folks. strava can be good for that (even though you mentioned not wanting to get on there, can't blame you). ya if you search some local running clubs, they usually have facebook groups and such which help people find training partners for runs etc.

soreness = none

run:
- evening, 1 hour, mulch
- didn't plan on running but.. planted some banana babies, lemon grass, and everglades tomato in a local forest (park).. then ran after ;f
- felt great

it was good, i'm glad i went. shut down a couple of intersections along the way, rallied outside the police precinct and chanted at the cops. it was pretty well organized: lots of water and snacks, medics on hand walking around with sunscreen and hand sanitizer, bikers riding ahead to block traffic, no question about who was leading (except for the chanting/singing, which got a little discombobulated). the leaders all looked like kids to me (early 20s at oldest), which is cool.

ah nice. good stuff.

left the run too late today. conditions were brutal in the afternoon: 97/36 air temp and 75/24 dew point, so i decided to wait until after painting. then that took longer than i expected, and now there's a thunderstorm coming that i'd rather not get caught out in. might could violate my normal principle of not making up missed workouts and just do the long run tomorrow. it's not gonna kill me.

hot af. love it. :ibrunning:

ya don't make it up who cares. all good.
