it was some hockey guy, he lands and loads up for like 3 seconds swinging his arms back and forward, then jumps like 4".

Yeah it's a way to suppress the stretch reflex, which is exactly what you should do for a depth jump since that's the key: remove any reactive rebound from the jump. Oh wait...

Maybe he read that it's more important to get higher than jump quicker, and he gets the highest off a standing vertical jump so he dropped, stopped and did a standing VJ. Or he could be retarded, who knows?
