Basketball / Re: NBA 2018 - 2019 Season
« on: February 28, 2019, 05:24:14 pm »
My gut feeling was Lebron going to LA was him saying that's enough of this basketball stuff now to do other things in life. But i don't even think he expected the team around him to be this poor. Ive thought this since his Miami days but he Lebron has really has been the worst off-court custodian of his GOAT player legacy. He should have put himself in better situations to win than he has. It's clear to me had he been more discriminating, he would have left Cleveland sooner the first time, maybe miami a year sooner and definitely not gone back to Cleveland. They won an unlikely ring but nevremind that. Not even sure why he thought going to the Lakers while trusting that damn fool Magic would work well for him. I think he would have been better off going to the Sixers and letting Ben handle the ball more while he played more off the ball.

I've been puzzled by some of his choices with regards to the teams he plays for. It would have been a fairy tale for him to be a one club player at Cleveland and turn it into a powerhouse dynasty club. I guess going to Miama made sense playing alongside Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade. Even coming back to Cleveland made sense (the prodigal son). However, going to the Lakers is what killed it. If Lebron played for the 76ers they would kill it. Can you imagine how deadly a team with Lebron, Simmons, Embiid and Jimmy Butler would be!? Shiiit. On their day when EVERYTHING is going right Golden State could beat them but 9 times out of 10 the 76ers with Lebron would outplay them.

Off court I personally believe Lebron has been amazing. No crimes, no scandals, family man and he appears to be someone who hasn't let fame get to his head.

like maxent said, Cleveland did *nothing* to keep him. They gave him no support. He saw what happened to A.I. he wasn't about to go out like that. . I love how he left. I also love that he went back and got them to the finals 3 times against one of the most lethal NBA teams in history, and somehow got a title against them - that's insane.

I love that he went to LA. I mean, i'd rather him have gone to a less "dynastic" franchise, but going to LA was a ballsy move, huge risk. That org is all about titles - yet their team has sucked since Kobe left. He goes there to try and "restore greatness", and somehow beat the Warriors/Rockets in the West Conf playoffs and get some easier wins against the East. Sounds like a fantasy but i'm sure Magic will give him some crazy support next year. Lakers were looking decent before LEBRON got hurt. Really hoping they make the playoffs, just to see what Lebron can pull off there, but that's looking very unlikely now. sucks that a rare LEBRON injury derailed it.

As for LA vs DET, i mean it's kind of obvious to me.. Lebron lives somewhere in California now. Living in Calofirnia is generally more appealing than living in Detroit. lol.

pc!

This ^. They were looking half decent with a healthy Lonzo and Lebron. I'm amazed at the difference without Lonzo tbh. Lebron still looks like he's not 100% though so I think their year is over. I would be hugely surprised if they weren't stacked come the beginning of next season though.

Daily discipline update-
Food has been great. Haven't had "junk" food or alcohol in about 5 weeks now. This feels amazing. The funny thing is I'm not going to be so dogmatic about it in the future but for the next month or so I think it will be worthwhile to stay completely off. The refined sugar is the main culprit where I'm trying to undo years of damage which I understand isn't going to happen overnight. I've been sticking to mainly cold showers every day since before Christmas but have still had maybe 3-4 warm/hot showers. I got caught up for a while thinking I had to have a cold shower every day. Why? Idk. Trying to be more balanced in these things.

On a weight/bf note I am down to 90.5 and my waist is down to just over 35". Had a scan at the gym the other day. It said I was 5%bf which is very unlikely. It did show I had a high level of hydration which screws up the scan though. Looking in the mirror and comparing a ton of online pics from dexa scans I would say I have no idea but could be between 9-14%. I think I am in a position though where I need more muscle. Visually my body fat is pretty good but I'm definitely lacking on the muscle front. I am going to go the next couple of weeks as I am now and see if I can get down to the 88's, stabilise for a couple of weeks and build from there. I've had more volume in overall training the last couple of weeks and this should help get that last couple of kilos off.

On a sleep front I'm averaging about 7 hours a night. Sometimes broken due to kids. Would like to get a touch more need to start a pre-bedtime routine just so I'm not all over the place with computer/phone/etc.

8pm

Deadmill- 15s sprint x 3
SL Calf Raise- 15kg x 5 x 3
Front foot elevated Split Squat- 4" box- bw x 15, 12 x 15, 12 x 15

Banded ankle mobilisations- 3 sets to failure each way each ankle

11pm
Stretching-
Head 2 Tow (H2T)- 72 pulses/side
Couch Stretch- 36 pulses
Wall piriformis- 90s/side
Wall middle splits- 2 mins
H2T- 72 pulses/side
Couch Stretch 36 pulses
Pigeon pose- 90s/side
Pancake- 2 mins
H2T- 72 pulses/side
Couch Stretch 36 pulses

Had some groin discomfort during the day which was definitely present during the split squats. I think a slight strain from hapkido. Cut the squats 1 set short and went a little easier in the middle splits and pancake stretches. It actually felt better after the squats though so idk. Will take it easy the next couple of days on movements that might aggravate it.

Edit- It was 40 degrees and driving home from my training right next to the oval I was running at was a 2.5m brown snake lying in the middle of the road. I didn't see it until it was too late and ran over it. Snakes are fkn tough it slithered away as I drove about 200m up the road and did a U-turn to see if I'd killed it. The snake was lurking on the curb next to the foot path seemingly unharmed. Snakes scare the shit out of me!!!

Damn. Brown snakes are no joke.

In addition to the Labyrinth book I am listening to a podcast in the car of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It's a Chinese literary classic and I'm 28 episodes in out of around 150. It's a funny format to listen to a book in. Not an audio book as he gives his interpretation throughout but great as he injects comedy into the mix and also is able to pause and give reference and knowledge around topics that a non Chinese just wouldn't be aware of.

guy with a violent crime from 20 years ago was asking for leniency to coach his kids baseball team. turned out to be very interesting.

Wow! How did it turn out?

Reminds me of those border security shows where someone it trying to enter the country and they have an assualt charge from 20 years ago and are turned away.

didn't turn out too good for the guy. everyone (mayor, assistant deputy mayor, and these attorneys etc) basically said it's impossible. it's state and city law or something. and there's absolutely no exceptions for violent crimes: disqualifier for life.

it had to be pretty bad too.. because they wouldn't actually say what it was, nor even hint to what it was, other than that it was "violent". and when some attorney asked the guy if he could mention what it was to the room, the guy said "i don't think it would be good with my kids being here" etc.. then the attorney basically said something like "and that's another reason why it's so hard to grant any kind of leniency .. if it's hard to talk about, how will the other parents feel when they find out?"

it was nuts.

one guy on the "panel" was very empathetic to him.. seemed like he wanted to try and do something for him. but you could tell from the other reactions on the panel, that there was no way anything was going to change.

the mayor mentioned "voting" .. but he said, voting is a right. we fight to restore rights to people who have lost them, and then paid their debt to society.. but coaching isn't a right. etc.

the mayor also listed off the crimes in the statute or whatever, that qualify.. he listed: homicide, armed robbery, rape, manslaughter, and "potentially others" ....... so this guy must have done some crazy shit back when he was 19.

mayor also mentioned: it's also relevant that you were 19, and not much younger. (even though the judge somehow tried him as a minor.. for some reason.. to lighten his sentence). but that is still in this law, it mentioned everything he was convicted of etc. so this law basically protects against any violent offender, from being able to officially coach/supervise children etc.

so this dude went there as a last chance to ask for leniency for a violent crime he did 20 years ago, to coach his kids baseball team.

was just intense to witness in person. wasn't expecting to see anything like that.

even if he is the best dude now, allowing him to do it seems like it's more trouble than it's worth, when it comes to public officials, attorneys, parents, etc. these folks aren't trying to lose sleep at night, and they care about no one getting hurt etc, so no one will be getting leniency.

very interesting moment!

pc!

edit:

oh also.. it was funny/interesting watching some of the "cops on guard" (big tough dudes w/ vests and guns etc) wake the fu*k up once this guy mentioned his violent past... prior to that they were kinda nodding off. once this guy started talking, they were locked in. every cop in there looked like they switched to "high alert" once he started mentioning his violent past.

the panel itself (with the mayor etc) was incredibly polite/respectful though. it was impressive. I enjoyed the dialogue. The mayor himself is extremely sharp.

That's crazy to be there for something that intense. I can't even imagine how many people would find themselves in a similar position.

Keep running into a wall late in the week. Didn't train Thursday due to work commitments and Friday and Saturday I just fell off the face of the earth.

Had a ball game yesterday. Was an interesting game. The other team weren't that competitive but they had a guy who would have been 6'5. He was a decent player but just like the rest of the team he wanted to shoot 3's most of the game. I played ok. Some decent offence and a couple of blocks. Need to be fitter though.

There's no contradiction.. im claiming daily squatting doesn't seem to do much for athleticism and may possibly limit it and at the same time i do want to become more athletic but not right now, too busy finishing off a goal (that i previously believed to have a benefit but no longer subscribe to that belief). I'm too close to just give up. It's more just to do it than for any benefit that may come but has not yet shown itself.

Mate you mistook my post for sarcasm. It was a legitimate question regarding athleticism. I asked myself the same thing recently and was surprised at my answer and how that lined up with my training practices.

I'm all for chasing that goal you've been chasing so long. Looks like you're closer than ever.

sorry i just understand what im saying and what im doing are two opposite things. if i truly believed this is a lost cause (daily squatting & squatting itself) i prob would stop and do something else. that cognitive dissonance is very real. And yea you got it, it's just about finishing what i started .. ive put too much into this one persuit to turn away after so long

re athleticism, it's something you recognise when you see it. and when someone lacks it you see it. i watched some kids games last friday while waiting for a court and there was a 14 year old kid (i imagine) jumping out of the gym, sprinting all over the court and just beasting in every possible way. that's an athlete. he's a (not tall) white kid but he tried to go for a put back dunk in a game .. that's a FAR better athlete than ive ever been or will become haha

an easier question is what does athleticism mean for me? that would be maximising my fitness, strength to power etc .. very dumb, very gym oriented qualities which are the vestige of the mediocre. or in other words, play a game where you can win at something that doesn't matter

I completely understand how you feel about athleticism and I came up with a similar answer to you. It's not a quantifiable set of numbers which makes it kind of annoying. There's a girl in my daughters gymnastics class so she'd be 5-7 years old. She runs like a punt returner and has that inbuilt agility, speed and coordination. It's just there.

I see you're playing mixed netball! It's fun isnt it? I used to play at uni. It was mostly netball girls and rugby guys. Where abouts do you play? How advantageous do you find the ability to jump? I dunked once or twice... Nobody seemed clear whether that was allowed? Lol Also totally get you mean about the violence from the females hahaha

Fun is one way to put it haha. I play just at a local league near me in Pakenham. Mainly gym rats/football players and girls who grew up playing. Some of the girls are unbelievable. Especially the shooters. I get hilarious reactions when I jump. People first comment how tall I am and how long my arms are and then tell me how high I can jump (which isn't even that high). In our league you can dunk but I've played in other leagues where no dunking is allowed. Not even jumping when you shoot. You can also goal tend in our league which I've done once.
Yeah man the women are full on. Couple of weeks back a girl was getting annoyed I kept intercepting the passes. As I jumped in front of her she legit pushed me in the lower back almost turning me upside down mid air. It was a ridiculous act and I would hate to think what would happen if a guy did that to a girl.
