Nicely done Adarq.

Have you noticed that you twist a lot on some of your jumps? Do you think that's because of the rounded approach?

I struggled with it for several years. I finally had to make myself take an extended break. That seemed to do the absolute best. I kept working out with TKEs (lightly) and took about 2 months off from playing. And then when I started playing again I started lightly, only 1-2x a week. I'm still in that phase right now, but some times I play 3x a week. But I never play on back to back days now. So far, my knees have been fantasically pain free. I'm enjoying basketball once again. If my knees start feeling strong enough again, I plan on starting to try to squat again (extremely lightly). But we'll see.

Also, just daily stuff. Icing, stretching, warming up properly and warming up enough. Also, I was given some stuff from my doctor called Voltaren gel (spelling may be off a bit). Basically, it's a gel form of aspirin (in a nutshell, obviously not the exact same). But you rub it in directly on your knee (I put it on my knee caps and surrounding area since that's where my pain was). And that does AMAZINGLY. I think you can just buy it over the counter now. I thought I saw it in the grocery store drug section the other day. It works very well.

Basketball / Re: ball rebounding devices

In my experience they're not worth the trouble. And they can't beat just placing a board at the bottom of the goal for the ball to bounce off of and roll back out to you.

how would you set that up?

Basically I got a 1 foot by 2 foot piece of plywood and leaned it up against the base of my goal then I ran a chain around it to keep it attached to the goal so it wouldn't fall when a ball bounced off of it. Basically, make the shot, it'd bounce the ball straight back out towards the top of the key...of course, you still have to make the shot otherwise you're still going to have to rebound it yourself.

Edit: I can take a picture of it later and show you what I mean if that's helpful.

Basketball / Re: How good are NBA players?

I've had the luck to play with a few of the players from the Hawks, Magic and several former NBA players and a lot of players that have played overseas.

Suffice it to say, they are above average. They would be the most dominant player on the court trying 50% with their off-hands. They're pretty darn good.

Highest level -- All-pro NFL football player, but most of my athletes are middle to high school level.  Also, a few college (mostly football guys).

Chris

That's sweet! Can I ask who it is?

Do you deal with basketball players much?

but 90% is a bit unrealistic.

Not for me lol. I need to record this shit. I went 20 for 23 last week from college and nba 3 range.

Yeah? But where was the defense?

Welcome to the forum!

Out of curiosity, how high of a level have you coached speed/strength at? I have no ulterior motive for this information, I simply am just curious.

By the way, in your signature, do you really mean 90% from NBA 3pt line? I think 35-40% would be a good goal...but 90% is a bit unrealistic.

I just put a piece of wood at an incline at the bottom of my goal. After I made it, it'd bounce on that back in my general direction. Otherwise I just rebounded myself. I always played conditioning games. Start by shooting a long jumper, then make, if miss rebound and shoot with off-hand, if miss, rebound and shoot with normal hand, if miss then by this time I should be close enough to do a layup with the off-hand, then rebound and start over.

It's difficult playing by yourself, but you can improve with focus. Don't worry about the number of shots you're getting up, worry about the quality of those shots.

You should be able to shoot solidly (10-20 shots a minute depending on shot distance/type) for at least 20-25 minutes while focusing on good form and rebounding for yourself and not getting too tired. If you can't do it that long than push yourself until you can for conditioning-sake.

I require my kids I coach to be able to do it for 25 minutes straight and they have to continue to shoot at least at a rate of 10spm (shots per minute) in middle school, and 12spm in high school. All while focusing on continuing their form and jump height on jump shots. Also, the rebound cannot bounce 3x before they grab it and shoot it again. Every 3rd shot has to be from at least 15 feet away so they're not all just shooting 5 foot jump shots. They have to do this 4x/week as part of their summer conditioning program. They work up in increments of course, start with 10 minutes, add 5 minutes every week-ish until goal is reached. I had one kid who had amazing stamina (best defender I ever coached...could hound the ball all game long on point guards) that could run this drill for almost an hour straight with good form.

Always remember when practicing any type of basketball-related skill, quality over quantity. Shooting 1000 jumpers a day is great, but if you're just runnin' around shooting haphazardly and not practicing the shots you'll take during games then what good does it do you? Shoot free throws, shoot set shots, shoot runners, shoot post-up moves, shoot pull-up moves, shoot off the dribble, shoot off rebounds, shoot how you play and shoot with a purpose.

Again, for rebounding help, I just got a big 1ftx4ft piece of plywood, leaned it up against the base of my goal and the ball would bounce back when it hits it. It really only worked on makes or short shots, but the more I made, the more the ball came back, the more I got to shoot. (Just don't shoot layups with it around the base of the goal, that's a broken ankle my friends).

Hope that helps.

Lance, do you have a problem with me using (more or less plagiarizing) this for some of the workouts for the kids I coach? I know several of them could benefit from putting this into their workouts this summer and off-season.

1. Get off the forum/internet.

2. COPY COPY COPY COPY COPY! I don't care if it's typing it on the computer or hand writing it. Just keep re-writing all you need to learn. Even if it's just main topics or bullet points. Writing it down and processing it mentally through your mind and physically through your hands is what works best.

Look, this is a horrible example but here we go. When you masturbate you don't just think about a naked girl or stare at a picture (=just read and read) and hope for the best. No, you get hands on and get busy with it (=copying and taking notes and re-doing it constantly). You add the physical part to achieve the best results.

Okay, I'm ending the awkward post here.
