not sure what happened. CNS just seemed to pack it up and call it a day after those first 3-4 jumps. did not get above 32" the rest of the time and had a few jumps where i didn't even follow through because i was out of position or knew i wasn't gonna get up. sickness could surely have played a part. can't think of anything else, really, because i've been sleeping and eating fine and it wasn't early in the morning, when i usually struggle.

better luck today, i hope.

the two hand 360 at 2:16 was really nice.. i need to rewatch it, don't understand why it looked so special.

true, this one is awesome. he whips it behind his head, like a super graceful two-handed tomahawk, maybe that's why it looks so nice?

EDIT: also, that video tells me three things. (1) vince was the GOAT, (2) many NBA players can windmill, and (3) there are some guys in the NBA who could win a dunk contest with yt dunkers if they put work into it, and why is the NBA dunk contest so lame then, and maybe this year will be fun.

elbow position is an individual comfort thing for the most part. if you're not getting discomfort from it then i wouldn't worry too much. your hands are pretty far apart, though, if you're worried about it maybe put them closer together. i start with my thumbnails on the edge of the knurling and then extend my thumbs out from there. has the added benefit of ensuring that i have the same -- and symmetrical -- hand positioning on the bar.

one thing i did notice is that your right elbow flares farther back than your left. that's probably a shoulder thing, i bet a dollar that one of your shoulders is more mobile than the other. something to look at.

Article & Video Discussion / Re: Meditation/Headspace?

i started going to buddhist sunday school when i was seven and went weekly for 7 years. my own choice, parents were supportive but nonreligious. so i learned a particular way of meditating very young. even did a few weekend-long meditation retreats when i was 13-14. it was wonderful, i only stopped because i started getting back issues during puberty that made it hard to sit straight for extended periods. posture is very important in shambhala buddhist meditation so i drifted away.

a few years ago i went to a manual therapist who had me do yogic breathing, which was intense as fuck and very different but also a form of meditation. i would literally be vibrating and unable to open my mouth beyond a little "o" by the end. crazy stuff.

don't know anything about headspace but stick with it i say.

yes and no. lebron could be an epic contest dunker if he put his mind to it. he can touch 12' and he's strong as shit, there's no doubt in my mind he could do something ridiculous like a two-basketball reverse elbow hang if he put some effort into practicing it. but he won't, and that's fine: it wouldn't help him be a better basketball player. and i guess that's my point. dunking is a specialty now for some leapers with elite talent and athleticism, and guys who are basketball specialists can't go toe to toe anymore because they spend their time doing something that makes them millions of dollars instead.

none of vince's dunks are as great as the kilganon double reverse elbow hang. none. and he's 3-4 inches taller than kilganon is.

the last dunk is amazing. it's funny to look back at the progenitors, it's only 12 years ago that he did that, 15 years since vince and obviously longer since jordan/wilkins and before that dr. j, but now none of the best/most creative dunkers in the world play in the NBA, except maybe gerald green. there are some guys who can really fly (looking at you, zack levine), but pretty much any of the top youtube stars would annihilate the NBA dunk contest.* you can tell from richardson's narration, he and arenas were making it up on the spot. there are dudes - famous dudes, whose names are known by hundreds of thousands of people - who spend all day thinking about and practicing dunks.

there's a point in there somewhere, i swear to god. i guess just that the internet changed everything.

*except that no one gets pumped about a ringer. part of the fun of the NBA contest for a long time was that the guys were already superstars and you got to see them show off in a way they couldn't otherwise. the youtube dunkers will never be that. and non-superstar NBA players are boring. the only NBA dunk contest dunks that come immediately to mind from the last ten years are green with the cupcake candle and javale with two rims.

WEIGHT: ???
SORENESS: none
ACHES/INJURIES: sick, all joints achey to some extent, knees especially; throat also swollen; head okay though
MENTAL STATE: see above, otherwise good

- shoot around, layups, drop steps x 40 mins
did a build-up, not putting full effort in, and on the four-step my knees were both like DID YOU FORGET THAT YOU ARE SICK, so i bagged that and just stuck to nothing more intense than layups and drop-steps and a few SLRVJ that were extremely uncoordinated

- stretch

debated whether to go to the gym, given that i am definitely still sick. ended up being a good call, i feel better for having gotten my HR up a bit and stretched.

^^^ i don't think it was actually telling me anything that i didn't already know. when i feel good, i feel good, and when i feel slow i feel slow.

in other news, turns out being sick blows. low-grade fever and the lymph nodes in my neck are like golf balls. was going to get my heart rate up and do some stretching at the gym today but instead i went home early from work, lay in bed for two hours without going to sleep, and watched tv. hope i'm clear-ish by tomorrow.

WEIGHT: 174
SORENESS: none
ACHES/INJURIES: right knee a little achy, more after end of workout
MENTAL STATE: good

- warm up

- DB jump squat 25s x 5,5

- squat MSEM 285 x 6

- squat 205 x 20
too easy, not sure why i put this little weight on the bar. felt good though.

- superset x 2
-- DB OHP 55s x 6
-- pull up +20 x 7,6

- stretch

there was literally no space in the whole facility for ME jumping, other than like the lobby which has tile floors and is full of people. the ceilings in the gym are too low, the aerobics studio had a yoga class, the racquetball and squash courts were all full. so did jump squats instead.

looks okay, suggest more sprint volume though. like start with 8 reps.
