the bigger problem, in my opinion, is that there is nobody in the nba that will teach artest a lesson..

There are plenty of people who would, Artest isn't stupid enough to go after them.  Look at his history: http://www.midwestsportsfans.com/2012/04/the-complete-history-of-ron-artest-metta-world-peaces-nba-suspensions/
JJ Barea, Ginobli, Derek Anderson, Pat Riley and his wife.  He's not crazy (at least in a violent way), he's an insecure coward.

I find it funny to lift heavy weights to sappy & soft songs while other people are getting hyped up to curl their 25s.

If it were me it would easily be the decathlon just because your window of opportunity is much wider in powerlifting than it is as a decathlete.  Depending on your competition (I assume you'll primarily be local), you can be a competitive powerlifter well into your 40s or 50s,  but competitive in the decathlon only until maybe your mid 30s.  I think you're 29 now so if you choose powerlifting and regret it in 2 years, your decathlete option is pretty much out the window as it would take you a while to drop the additional weight and develop the skills.  If you choose the decathlon and want to switch in 2 years, you still have 10-15 years to become a solid powerlifter.

I also wouldn't overlook the health and quality of life benefits from dropping 20kg from your frame even if for only a few years.

Sometimes I feel like i am slipping on deadlifts bc my freakin' hands are so small.

You're slipping because your grip is weak.  I'm 6'1 and my hand is just short of 8in.

Progress Journals & Experimental Routines / Re: Age vs Vertical

All this time I wondered why you used such awkward weight amounts like 121lbs, and 132lbs.  Never occurred to me that you were converting from kilos til I saw your vid.

kind of scary that people will read articles about vertical jumping from a guy in his 20s that trains consistently yet still only has maybe a 30in vertical.

So you would rather listen to someone like Air Up There who has like ~50inch vertical than Raptor who has a vertical in 'only' the high 30's?

chrisbro, though, man, really? adarq never got better than high 30's but we're all on his forum. we all listened to him like he was jesus christ when he was still active with people's training.

If you took something away from the article that's great, but I find it scary that someone with nothing more to his credit than middling results (from the videos he's posted I'm not buying his vert as being anywhere near high 30s) is writing articles on the subject.  Adarq's trained athletes and if I'm not mistaken has a degree in a related field.  It does help that his vert actually looks pretty good in videos but I would listen to a fat guy that could only jump 10 inches if he had good credentials.

why does everyone keep mentioning his bodyfat?  Looking at the video he looks pretty lean, I'd definitely guess he's < 10%

Basketball / Re: finger weights in games
« on: March 23, 2012, 02:07:25 am »
I can shoot good off the dribble but when receiving a pass and shooting set shot, i dont have the lift or the power to control the ball like i do off dribble.  Finger weights would help a lot.

So would practicing it.  Practicing is legal.

This is impressive as hell.  I don't know any guys 150 or below who are anywhere near your lifts.  Good work.

Program Review / Re: Smolov Tips?
« on: March 15, 2012, 02:55:17 am »
I've finished now (used box squats due to an injury but I think my tips still apply) and my tips in order are:

1. Wear thick soft shirts when squatting.  I routinely wore wife beaters and now i have a bruised line across my traps from the bar rubbing against my back so frequently.
2. If you make a huge gain (~40lbs...or 10% or whatever) after the base mesocycle you'll probably need a weightlifting belt for the heaviest sets of the intense mesocycle.  It may have just been me and because I was doing parallel box squats and saw huge gains, but my legs increased in strength faster than my lower back was able to support it.
3. Don't psych yourself out.  The organization of the full program is such that you're never really going to be faced w/a weight/rep scheme that you can't handle.  Just realize that and man up and do it.  Not sure about Smolov Jr but that actually seems like it'd be tougher since you don't have the 2 week introductory microcycle to get your body used to squatting 3-4x a week.

Lets take the bench press for example. We will use an athlete with a 3 rep max of 225 on the bench press for our example. Session 1 would look like this:

Bench Press- 225 x 1, rack the weight, rest 45 seconds, 225x1, rack weight, rest 45 seconds, etc. etc.

So he will perform 1 rep with 225 (his 3 rep max) every 45 seconds, for 10 total sets. Session 2 would be the exact same 225 x 1 rep for 10 sets, but the rest period would be cut down to 30 seconds between rest-pause sets. So session 2 would look like this:

Bench Press- 225x1, rack weight, rest 30 seconds, 225x1, rack weight, rest 30 seconds, etc. etc.

Would this work at a higher bench like 300?  Just plugging #'s in a one rep max calculator, when going from a 3 to 10 rep max, the est one rep max @ 225 only jumps 62lbs from 238 to 300, at 300 it jumps 82 from 318 to 400, which is a huge increase that I would think would take at least 12 months to achieve.  Also, would you recommend the 15s jumps for that weight or smaller decrements like 5s?  45s to 30s seem doable but the jump from 30 to 15s seems impossible.

Thanks in advance.

considering doing a tough mudder in september.

I've been talked into doing the one in Wisconsin this September. I'm not looking forward to the extra cardio & strength loss that will come with training for it but I enjoy a good challenge and it looks like this will be one.

Good luck if you decide to do it.
