BTW , the example is set a bit wrong , if they are identical ( same CNS etc ) at the same bodyweight with different bodyfats they can't be equally strong.

The correct example is 2 ( or more ) identical individuals ( same CNS , bones , heights , tendons , RFD , everything ) with the same relative strength and various bw/bf combinations.

Or just one individual at a given bw and bf, what will happen if he leans down , reduces bf% , also loses some strength and mass so overall relative strength is the same?

IMO the answer is the same for all cases:
The subject with less bodyfat for a given relative strength will jump higher because of better coordination.

edit : oops , while i was typing the above , steven-miller already posted the first part ( why the example was wrong ) :highfive:

Once again, thanks for ur help & wish u continued success towards ur goals.

np man , thanks too!

20 July 2011

Bodyweight@session : ~188.5
Injuries/aches : none
Soreness : quads 1/5 , calves 2/5 , trapezius 3/5 ( duh! )

Went to the park and shot around for 45 mins to get a good sweat.
Got a clean powerfull SLRVJ 9'8'' dunk, last time i did that was 2 years ago! Also got a very hard lefty and a pump-lefty on that rim. Touching rim on 9'10'' layups ( SL ).
Threw in a jumping warmup and then a few jumps to end the session ( no sets , just ~10 jumps with 30-45 seconds rest ):
Still very springy and reactive , SVJ : 28'' , dropstep 31'' , 1-step 32'' , DLRVJs 32,5'' , SLRVJs 28''
Awesome...

Also, he did a running dunk. Wonder if he could still do a standing or 1-step dunk. Prob not. Not that he cares. Btw, I still have enough Bulls' gear from their glory years to clothe a small family. Even named my 1st son after him (lol).

I'm sure he is able to get 20'' needed to dunk from a standstill with ease.
Remember , you can do a standing jump above 20'' at the same age with him and he is MJ.
Here , 2-handed dunk without even trying 2 years ago.

You're wasting away

Maybe, i'm trying to avoid it though.
I am trying to preserve as much strength and muscle during that ( planned ) weight loss. Have been at the 195+ area for too long , want to see how my jumping will be effected below 190. I will push a bit more , hoping to get a good session ( fully recovered and stimed ) at ~185 before leaving for holidays.
Last night was awesome feeling , i could feel the bounce, loading and releasing like a spring.
It looks like it's going good , weight lowers slowly , waist and bodyfat measurements go down, strength seems good too , my pistol squats ( box and deep ones ) are stronger than ever.

Oh wait , were you just teasing? :P

WTF is goin on here?? All my gym numbers are about the same as yours including height/wt/squat/ratios, etc and my jumps are about 10in lower than yours!!! How is this possible? What's the secret ingredient?? :pissed: :pissed:

Awesomeness.

Well then seems there's no reason to train at all based on these results. I'm takin the rest of the year off. See ya.

LOL!

@fedexpress : Ive been reading your journal , your jumps are indeed very low for your strength (absolute & relative ). I mean it's not like we are beasts or something , but having relative strength of ~1.75BW and reasonable bodyfat does not go together with your ~20'' jumping ability!

Few things i noticed:
- You are coming out from a serious detraining , 235lbs , 21%bf , some serious injury etc. Your body composition improved to a decent level now but it takes time to get back to a decent performing steady state , takes more time the older you are ( said the 37yo kid ! ).
- You haven't been practicing jumps much. If you're interested in jumping you must remember it is a skill that needs practice. You should jump ME 2 times a week and 1 or 2 more sessions of submax jumps ( or ME with low volume ) will not harm you.
- I didn't see much deep squatting. I love half squats myself , but always keep some deep ones in the plan. Your 1 leg parallel box squats demonstrates this too IMO. Our half squat numbers are the same but you are struggling with 45lbs on the SL , i can do 20 reps easy with that weight.
Still , if you just went out and jumped a bit more i'd expect you to reach 30'' rather soon and easy.
Looking forward to see your progress.

Oh, and MJ can still do this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaWCn05LD6g

Not bad for being old huh?

Watch your mouth, sonny. :D What's old have to do w/dunking a bball? I'm exactly his age and my vert has gone up 5in in the last 6 months. It helps to be over 6 1/2 feet tall w/well over 8 ft reach too. Just sayin. Btw he's my fav athlete ever.

Reach is ~8'10'' actually , and that could be double hand. He needs 14'' of vert to touch rim so ( given his ball palming ability ) he can dunk easy with a ~20'' jump. He will be able to dunk forever...

MJ = GOAT , this will also be true forever!

19 July 2011

Bodyweight@session : ~188 , :personal-record::wowthatwasnutswtf:
Injuries/aches : none
Soreness : none

10 mins dynamic warmup

ME jumps :

1x4 SVJs : max 29''
1x4 dropsteps : max 31''
3x4 RVJs : max 33''
-WTF , sick!!! I was extremely bouncy, felt so light and springy. Totally different jumping mechanics out of nowhere. I tended to want fast runups naturally , best jumps were off 4 steps ( haven't done such for like... 2 years??? )
I couldn't even time my rim touches correct because of the difference.
No caffeine , bad surface , bad light , haven't jumped truly ME for 3 weeks or more and i got those jumps , insane.

ATG PISTOL SQUATS:
4x8@BW
-Right leg needs some assistance at the bottom , left flies up.

SINGLE LEG CALVE RAISES ( 1:2:1 ):
3x20@BW

4119
Agreed about his strength. I still think he could jump better technically, not sure how MUCH better but still, he's not at an optimal level even for his structure in my opinion.

word , i don't disagree on that.

Multiresponse plyos and practicing jumping in an accelerative approach for a while (say 1 month) with squat at maintenance (or even working to improve on it) and then focusing on strength again is the way to go IMO.

I disagree about maintenance. He should keep pushing max strength up because it is lacking.
MR plyos and one more ME jumping session per week would be my recommendation.

4120
Seriously though... If this MB exercise is part of BoingVERT?, it could be really decent?. They could have some really good, new idea's.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBHGGqNcxS8

They should try that with a kettlebell.

MR tucks + retarted variation = "unique special drill" , awesome! :wowthatwasnutswtf:

We are trying to say that each individual has his own limitations , one can only improve so much his max strength , relative strength , jumping efficiency , RFD , FA , GCT etc.
Kelly Bagget says that you will be happy with your vert the day that you can squat 2xbw , at 10% bodyfat , being able to do 20 knee height lateral jumps in 10 seconds.
I agree 1000% , but not everyone is built to reach those abilities.
Someone might be able to increase his squat a lot but not lose fat. Should he , e.g. , freak out about his 15% bodyfat and try to get it to 10% ? or let it be and get his squat from 2*BW to 2.5*BW? Best choice is the latter.
Knowing your weaknesses and trying to improve them is important , but it is more important to see your strong points and keep pushing those that keep improving.
Steven miller's dropstep is the same with his SVJ. That is weird , one would say he is lacking plyometric ability. Should he change his training plan to improve that? In my humble opinion NO WAY , he should keep doing what he does , it works , his squat goes up , his oly lifts go up , his SVJ and dropstep go up , no need to change something. "you don't change a team that is winning".
As for scooby , if his jumping was bad for his strength, then we could consider things differently. But now it's fairly normal , low 300's squat , low 30's jump , nothing too weird. He just needs to push his strength up ( which he can as we know from his powerlifting past ).
Just my 2 cents...

4122
^^^^^
this.

Jumping form is important BUT i don't really believe there is much room for improvement after the "noob" gains.
He is a fairly strong individual that plays basketball , scooby knows how to jump. It would be great if we could all do a runup/plant/jump like TDUB , but we can't.

And this recent 'jumping form' spam tsunami makes me insist more , fuck form , keep improving your lifts ( normal and explosive ones ) , keep jumping often and all will fall in place.

4123
He surely can improve his jumping form, BUT:

BODYWEIGHT = ~190
MAX SQUAT LATELY = ~300

300/190 = ~1,57 , TOO LOW , END OF STORY!!!

4124
double your vert in 5 minutes.

BoingTerd + supplements = hulk!

Gotta bring that creatine transformation vid back and link it with BoingTerd:
Found the old link : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWxOFegC8H0 , it says you removed it :(

unbelievable mix, best mix i have seen in a long while.

same, myree is so impressive.. he has so much style in the air, plus his hops are elite level, then he crushes them rim with full aggression.. it's disgusting.

+10000000 , haven't seen such inhuman float for a long time. Last so impressive mix that i remember was the AUT TFB session.
