SF, like NYC, is sick if you have a really high-paying job. seriously, average one-BR rent in my best friend's neighborhood is $3,400. not a typo: three thousand four hundred dollars a month for one bedroom. he (a teacher) and his wife (landscape architect) live in an efficiency that they moved into five years ago and was below-market then. his brother lives in the apartment right below theirs, by himself, but he's an engineer at square and makes $200K. oakland/berkeley are a little cheaper but not cheap. actually berkeley would be a tight place to live. you would get diesel from running all the hills.

or austin, my friend's brother is a programmer and super happy there.

or LA, go turn T0ddday into a distance runner, or let him convince you to run the 400/800.  :P

I hate rowing on such a low resistance setting. Feels really awkward. Haha

i watched a video earlier this year -- on deadspin, maybe? -- of a couple of US olympic rowers showing a normal person how to do it, and IIRC they said they use the lower settings, 3-4, most of the time.

can you not work with them remotely, if the work is mostly coding?

bay area is tight but cost of living is truly insane there. feel you on wanting a change of scenery, though (obviously, given a few of my recent posts).

last night:

WEIGHT: ???
SORENESS: none
ACHES/INJURIES: stuff, nothing bad
MENTAL STATE: blah

- warm up
felt wack so i went off script a bit. did C2 500m in 1:41 at resistance setting 3. that would be in the top 90 times recorded on the C2 website for the USA in 2016. lol.

- some random crap, easy jumps, glute activation

have felt under the weather off and on and body has been achier than usual this week. going to NYC on saturday so i might just take it easy the rest of the week.

just came up with a great idea: weighted vest "pistol" squats. i'd have to look around for a 100+ pound weighted vest though, cause i can really crank them out bodyweight, and i go ATG too.

also, when i do "pistol" squats i always stand on something like a chair or box when i do them to get the flexiblity thing out the way. i guess they're more like single leg ATG squats then instead of pistol. i also get that on the internet, and even in real life, people will always point out that a true pistol squat is done on the ground, and i'm always wondering why people choose to do that. is it an ego thing just to show off how flexible you are? cause if not, why put in the flexibility factor when you're just trying to use it as a unilateral exercise to strengthen your legs?

right on. you can also use a dumbbell or kettlebell instead of a vest. doing them on a chair or box is fine. personally i do proper pistols, on the floor, but always with my heel raised up about an inch on something: a 25-lb plate, my squatting shoes, whatever. being able to do them flat-footed would be cool but just because, not for any real reason. if it's more comfortable to do them on a box, then do them on a box and internet dick-measuring be damned.

The taste, the relaxation side of it, the socialization. I think that's also a very Australian thing. Not cutting it out completely (got a bottle of Chivas last night as a gift from a client) but am just going to take a more measured approach.

rest assured, that's not just an australian thing. alcohol consumption is everywhere, even some of my friends and colleagues in afghanistan and pakistan drink to socialize (or relieve boredom, alcohol and opium abuse are actually a huge problem in the mountains because there is fuck-all to do in the winter).

Edit- on a side note- Cigars. The weather is warming up and I've got more scotch now and these things go perfectly with cigars. I've got a couple hanging around that I've been waiting to smoke. Does anyone else here smoke cigars?

only at weddings and the like but i do enjoy them a couple times per year. not at all sophisticated about them, though.

^^^^ no straps. Started using chalk recently and it has helped a lot. I have the grip strength of a school girl.

Farmer's walks would murder me. make me stronger.

fixt

or like high rep shrugs or kroc rows, if you don't want to or don't have space to do the walking part. even hanging from the bar for time.

I usually assert my sexual dominance with women by finishing on their face.  It's equivalent to putting a flag on the moon.  Idk I just think wanting to see guys naked running and eating ass as gay

+1 I would consider those people gay too, the ones who eat ass and the ones who love to watch it lmao.

you would both be wrong, but okay.

place looks tight, what are you gonna do down there?

i was talking with my work wife last week again about starting our own consulting business. probably 4+ years out from being able to make a run at that (i've got my two years in pakistan coming up and then if the consulting thing is looking appealing i'd want to do a master's first to get some training in stats and econometrics -- probably princeton because it's free). it would open me up so much in terms of where to live. i'm envious of people whose jobs aren't geographically tethered. in my industry you're either in a poor country or you're in one of a few really expensive cities: geneva, london, NYC, DC. there are a few exceptions, but emphasis on "few."

that is, unless you set up shop for yourself. then you just need to be close-ish to an international airport and you can live wherever. it'd be fun to live in santa barbara, or istanbul, or barcelona, or savannah, or minneapolis.

sorry for the tangent, just something that's been on my mind.

WEIGHT: ???
SORENESS: none
ACHES/INJURIES: none
MENTAL STATE: really good

- warm up

- skater jump x 10,10

- one-step RVJ x 5

- DLRVJ x ~15
really good, bunch of easy dunks with the dodgeball. didn't quite hit 37 but was close a couple times. noticed that on my best jumps with the ball i was taking off from a little farther away from the rim. not intentionally. not sure if that's because of shorter plant step or because starting farther away. interesting.

- SLRVJ x a couple

- SL SVJ x 5/leg

cut it short because i have to go visit my grandma. still, reasonably happy with this. i felt shitty/thick when i woke up, had my coffee and a banana and debated going at all for a while. but eventually i started to feel better and by the time i got to the gym i felt light and happy to be there.

some days, you just have to make yourself show up and see what happens.

ETA: later

- tennis x 30 mins
something tweaking a little in my back. okay.

again super inconsistent. one or two really good jumps and one or two abortive attempts. head out of it, called it a day. better luck tomorrow inshallah.
