Lakers, you are not reading appropriately - SVJ is not the same as RVJ.

I also think that people are not trying very hard to understand his position and where he is coming from. People just get into these discussions without an open mind and then get upset, like you are, that he is not accepting the idea that some athletes make solid increases in their SVJ without some form of prove. And he is rightfully so asking for it since those gains (let's say 30%, which is a number that has been used in previous discussions), despite the perception on forums such as this, are pretty rare. You could even look at the logs in THIS forum and on TVS and count the guys that increased their standing jumps more than 30%. There are people who did that, but if you think they are more than a small percentage, your perception of it is clouded.
You also have to understand that athletes on a board like this are a somewhat "special" population in itself. For Rip the SVJ is merely a diagnostic tool. People here treat it as their training goal. Those are two different worlds clashing together.

Those things should be discussed, but IMO this thread got quickly out of hand because opinionated people from both sides did not try very hard to understand the other side and could not get their heads wrapped around what was the actual difference in opinion. It's a pity that this is the case though.

i agree with that though i would say more of the stiff neckedness was on rips side

where're your dunks adarq?

ok so... i threw down some very nice dunks today off SLRVJ........ it seems i can dunk harder/better with LESS vert than my double leg, because of how much distance i get on my SLRVJ jumps.. also, my form looks pretty damn good in the plant of my good SLRVJ jumps, man shit is about to get interesting..

these pics dont do the dunks justice, i really threw these dunks down SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO hard.. video probably tomorrow.. pretty amp'd about how good my single leg is..

funny thing though, i did 100 layups (50 left, 50 right) with long sleeve shirt on before these jumps... so i felt fatigued as hell, but then some kids showed up to talk to me about my dunks, and i started flying.. snapped out of the fatigue really well.

ya know SLRVJ is interesting i find it easier to catch a lob(as in i've never been able to do it off two feet before)off of one foot for sure...i've never actually dunked off of two feet...only one...i just prefer taking off of two feet...more power i feel

it also is much easier for me to attempt dunks on submax off of two feet(can't land em)jumps too...i guess i feel like i have more control when i'm not trying to jump so hard...plus when i jump maximally i only seem able to try and rip the rim off...i can't just put the ball in easy like i can off softer jumps...what say you about this all?

36
i actually do a combination of both

37
Maybe it has to do with your spinal erectors. I have a similar problem with heavy squats parallel and atg because I feel my back gives out more than my legs. You can try adding some hyperextensions or good mornings into your routine and see if that helps.

i have the same issue...i feel myself start to lean forward a lot...my lower back always seems to be my weak link in terms of squating

38
Dirksilver, yes, I mean pistols, not bss.

raptor, here is a vid of me doing some squats.

See any issues?  I think my knees are going too far forward, maybe that is making my squats too quad dominant?

here is my journal link.

http://www.adarq.org/forum/progress-journals-experimental-routines/my-progress-journal-keeping-it-simple/

your squat looks pretty decent to me...maybe it's as simple as you lack the confidence to try putting more weight on the bar...just warm up and keep ramping up singles...if you fail you fail but you'll push yourself a little

and if that doesn't sound good to you then just push up your pistol squat...try doing it in a rack with a barbell

What I said was rushed and didnt makes sense, well actually is wrong. I just meant the look of the growth is different between the majority of black and white athletes. stefan holm has low insertion and a bloated calf look kind of like Rip.  Jordan, Asafa Powell, etc. have a small ball of muscle high up on the calf with the long achilles. Insertion points and pennation angles differ is all I am saying but surely my last comment was wrong because even the jordan and asafa powell calf muscles hypertrphy.

Long strong tendon and well placed muscle = x amount of force
Short tendon and extra muscle mass to make up for lack of tendon = x force

I'm a white athlete that has long achilles & high calfs. It's a matter of genetics not race.

IMO extra muscle mass on the calfs doesn't make up for greater tendon elasticity. I would say a longer achilles is more beneficial.

Many top sprint coaches advise against putting mass on the calf's.

i would disagree simply because it's so hard to put mass or your calves period...but greater strength can be put on and tendon stiffness can be improved

Ok I looked over it and it makes sense. I read KellyB's article as well. Thanks. How about this theory then:

Knee caps- good athletes tend to have protruding knee caps. Maybe this relates to something about the patellar tendon function or just another charactersistic related to athleticism. I think part of it is having low body fat but the actual size seems to be bigger with some good athletes.

huh...never heard that...put up some pics up please

Quick backstory.  6 feet tall, 190 pounds.  Been training off and on for a couple months.

So I really suck at squats (max 235) but I feel like my unilateral strength is ok.  For instance, I can perform consecutive pistol squats holding 35 pound dumbbells in each hand.  It seems like I can much more easily "express" strength with unilateral stuff than I can do with squats.  So should I just work on BSS and lunges and "max out" with those and then go for squats?  My squats have completely stagnated and I'm not sure why, whereas I feel like I can make quick decisive gains with unilateral work.

and when you say pistol squats you actually mean pistol squats and not BSSs right?

still wrong brother...if you read back through the threads you'll see we had a sdiscussion about this type of thing a while back and some convincing arguments where made for shorter achilles being better for vertical jumping

longer achilles(which i has as a white dude)are better for top end speed potentially
