MOVIES & ENTERTAINMENT & SHeeT! / penn and teller: fool us
« on: September 16, 2017, 05:26:13 am »
For me, Penn and Teller: Fool Us is the greatest TV show of all time. Simple premise: Magicians try to do tricks that fool Penn and Teller, and the prize is that they get to appear in P&T's act in Vegas. Three reasons I love it:

1. Many of the tricks are incredible in their own right. Even the ones that don't fool the hosts are usually beautiful or amazing or both.
2. Penn and Teller are always kind and positive. The whole atmosphere on the show is one of supporting and sharing love for a weird, niche craft that is ultimately a really hard way to make a living for most of the people doing it professionally. Everybody feels good. It's wonderful. It's similar to the British show QI for that reason: everyone is rooting for each other. Watching people be generous is extremely gratifying.
3. When they get fooled, it's because the magician did something stupefying. Cases in point:

on a related note, i have become obsessed with david blaine, who is a genius.

good news on the knee, and shoulder tbh .. if the knee keeps improving and allows you to get some more runs in (if your work schedule allows it), i'd be curious to see how you'd feel if you bumped up the run frequency a little. Could really loosen that shoulder up. These light runs & eventually some light intervals (relaxed/very submax 100's with walk back recovery) could be just the thing to promote more healing/adaptation.

jump rope can be pretty intense on the shoulders from my experience, and you'll get more ROM during running .. so i'd personally try and get more light runs in (if possible) & see what happens - as long as the knee isn't made worse by the runs of course.

personally i'd try to avoid ultimate for a bit, just to help try and not aggravate it alot. :/

peace!

i'm gonna add distance gradually before i add frequency, in part because it's easier with work and stuff and in part because i think not letting myself rest enough is part of the problem. that said, the knee started hurting almost immediately when i went back to tennis a month or so ago -- as soon as i had to decelerate to the forehand (right) side it was in pain. and it's been problematic off and on for years.

tbh what i really need to do is get back into PT mode like i did when i was spraining my ankle over and over in my early 20s.

jump rope doesn't bother the shoulder seemingly at all, so i'm gonna keep doing it here and there.

film study like this guy did can help: https://dash.harvard.edu/bitstream/handle/1/14398550/ZHANG-SENIORTHESIS-2015.pdf?sequence=1

football is all about film study, both to study an opposing team's tendencies and to learn concepts. ultimate should be no different. watch some MLU or AUDL games very closely, for example by following around players who are similar to you but better (tall, not handlers) and noting where they are and what they do throughout each point they play. where are they looking? when on D, if they're in man, and they probably are, who are they marking, where are they relative to their guy, and when do they leave their guy if ever?

i've been out of the game for a while and was never elite, so my awareness of who's on top now is limited. but you should be aware of or be able to find out quickly who's a tall D-line cutter on DC Current or DC Breeze, and MLU and AUDL actually do a pretty okay job filming their games. limited camera angles but that's actually good because there's usually a pretty wide view.

the comparable-but-better player who comes right to mind is will neff, who i played with a little bit in college (the one year he and i overlapped at michigan, but i played B* so we were only on the field together for a fall tournament and in practices). not sure how much good footage there is online of ironside but it's worth looking. he's a beast.

*if i had my life to do over again, one of the things i'd change is getting way more disciplined about ultimate way earlier. another is breaking things off with my freshman year of college gf way earlier than i did. god that was a bad relationship. what were we talking about again? oh right. i'll never be more than, well, a fast and explosive donkey, but i have the raw tools to be a good handler and serviceable cutter. athleticism at the bottom end of elite rosters was never out of reach if i'd just bothered to spend more time getting skilled and getting in awesome shape. i envy you discovering and dedicating yourself to it at your age.

EC is a combination of ephedrine and caffeine.

you just copped to spending $30,000 on equipment and whatever else. those two books together are excellent and cost less than $100. yes most of the info in them is available online for free but you have to search for it and put it together yourself. the whole point of lyle's books is to help people lose weight without losing strength, or to gain weight without getting overfat. so while your experience is what it is, you don't have to lose all strength while cutting quickly or slowly.

just sayin', priorities...

btw.. i am just fooling around at the low rim.. there is no way in hell i can ever dunk on a 10 foot in the near future.  Infact.. I should go back to 10 foot and make some video...

this constant jumping over the low rim getting close to dunking... keep my hopes up. but I need to also remind myself... this is not a 10 foot.

How high was rim?

i think u need to jump more relaxed and confident. U seem a bit too frantic when u jump.

agree. also you need to grease a groove a bit more scoob. you've been there in the past but in this vid you're taking so many little choppy steps. get that t0ddday method back in action. only add a step when each new one adds height.

unless you're planning to compete at some point, if that's a comfortable depth then don't sweat it. hips were shooting juuust a touch on the last couple of reps. be careful as weights get heavier, if that gets worse can lead to low-back strain as you pitch forward and try to correct.
