Bear with me, i'm trying to keep this very short :)



This is easily my favorite quote of all time:

"Nature has provided man with the possibility to enhance his abilities in extreme situations, and we need to utilize it in the training of the high class athlete." -- Prof. Yuri Verkhoshansky

I have my own understanding & interpretation of that quote, but I've noticed people seem to take this quote & run with it in all kinds of directions.

First of all, it doesn't mean that there exists some kind of magical training formula or exercise, that when performed, will allow an athlete to reach arousal levels similar to those seen in an extreme life or death situation. This quote, when taken out of context, can easily be misinterpreted as such.

1. Arousal levels

Now on to the meat of the matter, what constitutes extreme? Well, there exists a natural continuum, let's invent one real quick, with a level of 1 to 7:

Arousal Continuum

NOT EXTREME <1--------------------------3.5---------------------------7> EXTREME: LIFE OR DEATH

 
So for example, using the arousal continuum:

  • LEVEL 1: Being comfortable and relaxed
  • LEVEL 2: Low intensity training session (LITS)
  • LEVEL 3: Moderate intensity training session (MITS)
  • LEVEL 4: High Intensity training session (HITS)
  • LEVEL 5: Very High intensity training session (VHITS)
  • LEVEL 6: Stimulated VHITS (SVHITS)
  • LEVEL 7: LIFE or DEATH situation



Now, let's give a general example of each:

  • LEVEL 1: Watching Yanni on TV
  • LEVEL 2: Low intensity GPP (<50% 1RM), circuits, jogging etc
  • LEVEL 3: Moderate intensity GPP ( > 50% 1RM and < 80% 1RM), sprints, jumps, sports, low level reactive work
  • LEVEL 4: Intense training ( > 85% 1RM), plyo progressions, low volume plyos, sprints, jumps, sports
  • LEVEL 5: Intense training ( > 85% 1RM), shock blocks, overspeed, stim method complexes, depth drops, REA (ie drop catch lifts)
  • LEVEL 6: Same as LEVEL 5, except management of fatigue becomes an additional stimulus created by using specially crafted fatigue blocks or fatigue sessions, inducing a supercompensatory response for LEVEL-5 work
  • LEVEL 7: I'd get sued if I listed my ideas.


Briefly, an athlete will progress from level 1 through level 4 over the course of their training career. Rarely will athletes master level 4 or experience levels 5 & 6, either through lack of knowledge, lack of progression, or lack of preparedness. Utilizing a training session that makes use of level 7 arousal is possible but not well documented, and especially not "recommended". Actuuuuallllly, I'm pretty sure Halil "Little Naim" Mutlu was a weightlifting slave, that might count.

After progressing through the beginner stage, it might take years for an athlete to be prepared enough to truly experience level 5, so most of the time is spent in level 4. Level 5 & 6 become important when trying to fully peak performance, such as in an elite athlete. Level 5 & 6 can also be used with intermediates, but with care & with modifications, such as less volume & lower supramaximal intensity. Regardless, incorporating level-5 & level-6 requires a great deal of preparation and knowledge about ones self in regards to the training process.




2. The Potential of the Human Organism

Verkhoshansky states that a human has a few important reserves, or resources provided by the CNS (central nervous system):

Easily Available:
  • Reserves employed in reactive movements (15%)
  • Physiological Reserves employed under conditions of elevated motor activity (20%)


Inhibited by the CNS:
  • Special Reserves mobilized only under conditions of muscle performance of great intensity or long duration (35%)
  • Innate Reserves (concealed, hidden, defended) mobilized only in extreme, life threatening situations (30%)



Notice that the special reserves & innate reserves are "inhibited by the CNS". This means, the CNS is protecting the body from utilizing these resources, but they are available in extreme circumstances, such as life & death situations. Through progressing one's abilities in level 4, the special reserves gradually become available, ie, less inhibited. Through progressing one's abilities in levels 5 & 6, the innate reserves gradually become available, ie, less inhibited. The difference between the special reserves & innate reserves lies within the training methods employed. The special reserves become available, through volitional (voluntary) effort, such as in sprinting, squatting, olympic weightlifting, etc. The innate reserves become available, through extreme situations of supramaximal overload, such as in the shock method (high volume depth jumps), the stim method (stimulation caused by a tonic exercise, such as depth jumps, to improve a subsequent exercise, such as squatting), and overspeed sprinting.





So, here you go, in a nutshell, from Verkhoshansky himself:




There are two key phrases here. The first one, "becomes very difficult", is referring to athletes who have truly begun to reach a plateau in their abilities. The second one, "involves major expenditure of time and energy by the athlete", is self explanatory, but often overlooked. Training to realize your true potential is NOT easy, it is hard, hard, hard work.

There are no shortcuts to achieving your ultimate potential.

The movie wasn't great, wasn't bad, so it was definitely "ok". It has some pretty evil action & gruesome scenes in it. Law / Whitacker definitely provide good acting. All in all not bad, but I wouldn't rush out to go see it.

The concept of the movie is definitely interesting though.

If you watch a fight, you will notice that when they grapple or clench, they push on each other with their head. Also, there are multiple other instances where the head is pushed on for leverage or advantage by the opponent and you need to be able to keep your head up to see what is going on. I have no idea why he added a lateral raise to it.

ya that is a good point. I still think it has more to do with strengthening the sternocleidomastoids for anti-rotational strength of the head, but you could very well be right on this one.

GSP well definitely be the guy on top pushing down with his head, that's why I think it has to do with strengthening the neck for anti-ko ability, if thats even possible. GSP could possibly be an olympic medalist wrestler, hardy stands no chance in that department.

ya definitely.. i just liked the vid, put together nice.

he definitely does look good athletically though, but against people his size and greater, would look alot different. Some nice throw downs in there, especially the off the backboard BTL.

Dream about gabkicks haha:

Ok, so, I'm hanging out with you in your basement, playing F1 or something. Then some chick comes over and you're like dude give me some space. So I go upstairs, now I'm in some kind of boat in the amazon. Meanwhile, it keeps flashing back to you trying to makeout with this chick. You're making progress.

Then it switches back to me, and these pirate people with axes/swords board the ship and start chopping everybody in to pieces. So i'm running, fending for my life etc.

Then it switches back to you, you're like, RIGHT THERE, and all of a sudden, fucking commets/asteroids start raining down and destroy everything and I wakeup.





3/24/2010:

Ok so, i'm driving with my mom in her car, apparently going to pick up a pizza. So she drops me off near the corner, and leaves to go do something. I'm walking to the pizza place and the entire town is deserted, no one anywhere. Then I see some football guy I trained way back, and he tells me "it's labor day man everything is closed.". So, now i'm just waiting for my mom to spin back around and come pick me up.

So, off to my left I see 5 cops all of a sudden, with guns pointed at the football guy possibly. I then put my hands up, which now have workout gloves on them (for when I do pullups). The cops notice me and I'm like "i didn't do anything". Then, 10 cops are on me, guns pointed, one tackles me, hands behind my back on the ground. The dude is using his gun to frisk me, ya that sounds gay but apparently I killed 18 cops so no one is withdrawing their weapons. I keep telling them i didn't do nothing, put the gun down, but they don't listen.

Anyway, it then skips to where i'm in prison waiting for my verdict date, which seemed to take like a month in the dream. That's why this dream was hell, I felt like i was in it for so long. So that period of time goes by, then I'm off to the court. I get out of the court, hug my family, cops everywhere, then go inside the court. There everyone looks intent that I am guilty. So, as they are about to read the verdict, I wakeup.

Gah so I just checked out a Q&A this podiatrist that I'm seeing on Friday did a while back in the Washington Post and the guy is all about orthotics and extra-supportive shoes and so on even for toddlers! The (dominant) side of me that loves being barefoot or wearing as little shoe as possible is reeeeally skeptical right now. If/when I have kids those little fuckers are gonna wear shoes as infrequently as possible. I kind of wish my appointment was RIGHT NOW, I'm really antsy about it for some reason.

Gotta be open minded, gotta be open minded, gotta be open minded.......

ya im with you man.. orthotics (&strengthening) for kids in extreme situations with huge deviations, otherwise, strengthen those fuckers up.. It's kind of similar with the ADHD shit now too. Man, I was hyper as fuck as a kid, but that's because I am very imaginative/creative, the mind is always racing between tons of ideas. I'm so glad kids weren't put on that shit as often, probably would have lost a huge amount of creative development.

the over-prescription of america pisses me off pretty bad.

I don't even like taking medicine when I'm sick, yet most americans are pill popping daily for god knows how many "ailments".

so ya, don't rush to a decision on the orthotics, think it through.. those people like to put you on the spot :)

ah, i was the exact opposite from a young age through college: knees problems but no shin problems..

then during my RVJ mission i caught shin splints quite a few times, never had them before that.

make sure you balance those strong calves out with some work for the muscles around the shin

Word , my shins are so sensitive , always were. Probably because cavles were always 10000xstronger.
And i always thought i should do some shin strengthening shit , dorsiflexion things etc...
Of course like a true asshole i have never done even 1 single set of shin excercise in my whole life! :D

I'd say it more has to do with the strength of the feet/arch etc.. that has a huge impact on "shin pain". The anterior shin muscles get so much work in running/jumping etc, no need to even really work them isolation style. If your arch is collapsing/flat feed, that's going to be alot of stress on the tibia/fibula and the membrane that connects them. That's usually what freaks out.

be careful man, achilles tendonitis sucks, it took me like a year till it felt about normal, and even then i still had tenderness in the area, which lasted for about another year, and strangely dissapeared a few days after i did a stim on my calves, maybe the extra calf strength was necessary

advice may sound familiar here, but it ain't worth it to get achilles tendonitis now, you still got a long training career ahead of you, i'll get to that 275 squat in time and you will get to your goals, make sure that achilles is ok, i think that would be one of the worst things to injure especially when your focusing on one leg vert/reactivity, etc.  It's a bitch to heal up too, and you won't be able to fight through it, or even want to if you injure it

ya thanks for the words. When I was doing my RVJ stuff a while back (you know, 2007-2009 or whatever), about .5 years into my training my left achilles started acting odd, so I was always worrying about it. Having the achilles-injury stuff in your head is never good, shit would mess with my head hardcore. I don't even like talking about it.

I call it achilles-area because, I don't really think it's my achilles. I think it's a flexor digitorum muscle, which is in the general area:



I crunched (flexed) my toes during calf raise, and felt something.. did it by accident.

achilles-area still bugging, possibly a little better, but scary nonetheless.. gonna have to be very careful.. tomorrow will probably be RFI again but ill just tone it down, i need to maintain the bounce ive gained.


shadow boxing:
- sick speed, 4 rounds



ISOT: 3 rotations

neutral grip pullups:
- 19, 18, 16
- best pullups ive ever done after shadow boxing, for sure, so much power


dips:
- mini dip things, cause of shoulder, fast, quarter depth
- 40, 40, 40


squat:
- heels elevated, done with alot of power tonight, best so far
- 95 lb @ 15, 20, 18


single leg squat variation:
- holding a 10 lb db in the off hand
- 20,20,20


calf raise:
- BW @ 50, 50, 50
- so much pump in glutes/calfs from that
