if you're interested in books about war, which would make sense under your current circumstances, have you read The Things They Carried? classic. also svetlana alexievich's oral history of soviet women combatants in WW2, The Unwomanly Face of War, is one of the best things i read last year.

didn't get home from work until 9. felt sick again in the afternoon. not as bad, but still, weird. a friend who works in the same building as me mentioned that he sometimes gets headaches in the afternoon and he thinks it's the stale air; we can't open the windows.

the street cats are howling like you wouldn't believe tonight. it's both hilarious and very annoying.

it's great, like straight out of geocities.

did some foot/ankle/calf mobility work and foam rolling tonight and started to work out, but gf is having a really terrible week and needed tlc much more than i needed to exercise. felt sick after lunch, came home early and took a nap and some acetaminophen. felt better afterward but not 100%. also have been peeing a bit more than usual, very clear. don't think i've been drinking more water than usual so that's odd.

true.

btw has anyone ever used this effect before? has it always been on here?

you PR nearly every workout. also, training is about overreaching and then supercompensating while you back off. i bet if you gave yourself a bit of time off you could hit a huge PR. it's why i've been secretly hoping for KF to sign up for a PL comp and actually take a few days off for once. i bet he could hit 600.

yeah the NBA is almost by definition the top ~400 players in the world, minus a couple in college who belong in the pros and a few overseas. duke has 3-4 of those top 400, probably a few in the 400-600 range. but the rest of the team is more like top 1200 or something. jack white, an australian junior who might get drafted in the second round and bump along in the g-league for a while or go play in europe, is getting 20+ minutes and started three games. he would get murdered by any even below-replacement-level NBA forward.

the phrase "shot out of a cannon" came to mind. i was trying to relax, 1 km split was 4:45, tried to relax more, 2 km split was 4:43. lol. body was ready. no shin pain (yay) but lower lateral right ankle started to feel tight around 3.5 km so shut it down at the end of that lap.

- stretch

i am, perversely, tempted to see if my body has really supercompensated after its week off by going for a PR tomorrow. the wiser choice would be to rest and do some other exercise. might just adapt acole's routine. AERS AERS AERS.

alright the last week has been absolute rest. gonna run again today, gently and on the track and not very far. wish me luck.

word, strong recommendation.

i started using goodreads last year or the year before (had an account before that but never used it). previously i just kept a written list of what i'd read. goodreads is a niftier way to keep track of books read and especially books to-read. anytime i hear about something interesting i look it up on there and add it to the list. handy reference when i'm trying to figure out what to read next. also for looking back: i read ~30 books a year (37 last year, actually).

repost because i just watched it again six times. be sure to watch the rockets' bench in the first shot. don't often see opponents reacting like that. one of the greatest in-game dunks ever.

case in point: cleveland's bench now includes nik stauskas, who was the big ten player of the year and a consensus all-american but is barely a replacement-level pro.

again, zion:

from an interview with the photographer who took that shot:

Quote
I tweet during timeouts, so I was kinda going through the stuff on the camera and looking, and I just zoomed in to see how sharp it was, because there was good action in the frame,” Kamenish said. “And I was like, ‘Oh god, look at that.’ And I showed it to the guy next to me, a seasoned basketball player back in his day, he’s like, ‘Oh god, look at that.’
