Shoes / Re: A shoe specifically for dunking
« on: September 03, 2016, 04:10:47 am »
I'm actually pretty happy with my Kobe's they're not heavy at all and lowtop, comparable to my running shoes .. the only problem is, and this is a deal breaker ... is that they're not flexible on the top so i dont get much dorsiflexion (?). if i can find a pair of shoes that have that as well i'll be super happy for a dunking shoe (and general basketball).

i have the kobe 9's and i don't think i can find a better shoe for dunking indoors than them. they're low to the ground and flat, so they're not like typical basketball shoes where theres too much cushion and it becomes cumbersome for jumping. also the traction on them is literally GOAT lol. i also had the nike zoom streak lt 2's which have really thin cushion. on court theres barely anything separating you from the ground. the traction on them inside wasn't too good though, but if they did have good traction i would've ordered more pairs. i used them outdoors instead and the traction is completely worn out now.

i really like shoes with thin cushion though. might be a placebo, but i feel like i jump higher in them. you really get to transfer that energy straight into the ground instead of having soft cushioning absorb it. also cool how you can pass for a shorter height without wearing shoes with really thick cushion. my height without shoes is in between 5'11 and 6 ft, so i can pass for 5'11 in my zoom streak lt's and be a sub 6 ft dunker lol. i'm like 6/6'1 in my kobe's though, and 6'2 in my kd 7's.

Trap bar deadlifts 275 lbs x 10, 315 lbs x 6, x 6.

Pretty easy with 3 plates. Definitely felt my quads way more. Very short ROM, I brought my chuck taylors to lift today, and that made it better. Usually I lift in my running shoes and they have a thicker sole along with a bit of elevation in the heel.

was thinking about starting squatting again, but after that bit of knee pain yesterday, i think i'm gonna hold off for a while longer. what do you guys think about high bar ATG squats vs trap bar deadlifts btw? i know adarq does the quarter pin squats, and the trap bar deadlift seems similar to it.

correction: adarq does the half squats and/or half pin squats :D

I actually did "lockouts" more than quarter squats.. I rarely used quarter squats. I did however just unrack really heavy weight to help me feel mentally stronger with 400+ on my back etc.. That helped me when I was working on hitting 405 lb. on the half squat. I definitely feel like it helped, but it was alot of "mental benefit" .. and I had the safety pins set really high in case I needed to drop it. I also wouldn't recommend that though, that's more of an advanced technique and it's not really needed until you're pretty much peaked in your abilities (it might still not be needed though).

I had a trap bar when I was working s&c... loved it. it's a great tool. If I had one, i'd definitely prefer it more than deadlifting.

also as far as your knee, what are you jumping in "runners" (running shoes) for? Waaay back when I was just getting into vert, I was jumping in running shoes.. absolutely hated it.

pc!

ah i see. probably gonna stay away from those lol. yea, i can kinda tell that you'd prefer the trap bar over straight for deadlifting. can see that you're more on the quad dominant side through your two foot jumps and pin squats, so would be guessing you'd prefer the extra knee involvement that you get from the trap bar.

and no idea, but they were working fine, they're actually the shoes i'm wearing in my vid where i dunked on 10 in my backyard. i think it was more so the court, but i'm gonna try it out again in ball shoes.

pretty nice. he probably could throw down hard if he knew how to lob too, especially being only 5'7.

thanks all. i actually used to do a lot of single armed shooting in the past, funny thing is i think i still am more accurate mid ranged with one arm than two. will try these all out.

went to a random outdoor court today to put up some dunks on a rim that i think was 9'8. was wearing my runners, and it was kinda slippery, ended up having a bit of left knee soreness from that session.

i see, that sounds good then. i'll probably run no longer than a mile too. it was just the losing weight/muscle thing from the extra cardio that i was concerned with though, but i guess if i wanna run guess i'll have to stuff myself afterwards. also something related, when i was in the 12th grade, it was when i seriously started bulking up, started squatting and sometimes deadlifting, and went from weighing 110 the last year to 160. for gym class, we had to run the 1.5 mile, and i remember absolutely smashing my last year's PR that year. i think that bulking up and having the extra muscle helped even though 1.5 is more long distance.

damn 110 to 160 in 12th grade is either a late growth spurt or alot of needed eating!

i also remember having more stamina and energy, and definitely had a lot more power.

nice!

what happened to your vert too? it also go up?

pc!

it was both lol, i used to be a shrimp in my younger years, but started growing steadily from gr.9. i used a mass gainer too, was just dead set on gaining weight. at the end of gr.12, i think i peaked at around 175 lbs at around 5'10.

and yes, even though i ballooned up, my vert improved too. went from barely touching the rim in gr.11 to snapping it easily in gr.12.

back up.

i do the 4 basic motions: a push forward(bench press), a push upwards(BTN press), a pull from above(pullups), and a pull from towards you(db rows)
