I've been pretty much squatting and deadlifting at around 80-90% of RM almost every day for the last month.

Is this near optimal strategy?

I've been taking a break from competitive bball league games/pick up because of several injuries i've acquired (hand, groin, and knee)

In the mean time I've been lifting a lot of weights.  I have never taken creatine before.  As my injuries begin to heal and I get back to doing more explosive type training, would i benefit from taking micronized creatine?

Had meniscus problems since december, pain comes and goes.  Now it has been happening more and more.  I will stop playing bball altogether.  But can I still squat/deadlift with a minor torn meniscus?

I heard taht all people's meniscus wear down through time...

So very recently I changed my squat form from wide stance to a more narrow stance, and I have been going not totally ATG.  So now I have this kind of soreness/tightness/pain near the hernia?  It is the muscle at the tip of where the legs start near the groin area.

I've tried all types of stretches (like it band stretch) but it is just not going away.

Lately I've been squatting the most i ever have and below 90 degrees.  It's not much, probably between 135-225.  But afterwards, my left knee (usually my good knee) starts to become really sore when i bend it.  It is usually at the top above the knee cap so it's definitely not the patellar tendon.  So if i were to do a squat with no weights right now, it would kind of be sore right at about 90 degrees.

What seems to be the problem folks?

Recently I invented a new way of doing jump squats, by using this machine as a type of resistance.  I'd set it to the bottom and would grip it like I'm doing a dumbbell squat jump.  The good thing about this is that there is resistance the entire jump, unlike using weights where there is no resistance at the top of the jump.  thoughts?

Wouldn't it be logical to focus strictly on sprints, plyo's, and core strength (squats, deadlift, lunge, back, a lil abs, etc) maybe calf raises and not do any upper body exercises like bench, shoulder, curls, flys, rows, etc?

BTW are there any upper body exercises that are essential to explosiveness/vertical/speed training?

Injury, Prehab, & Rehab talk for the brittlebros / naproxen intake
« on: April 21, 2012, 10:58:23 am »
I've taken about 80 220mg naproxens in the last 40-50 days.  Is that real bad?  I just got so many aches and pains from trying to get back into shape and playing tough bballs games overweight.

I think the size of the hand is extremely underrated in lifting and basketball.  With bigger hands you can easily grab the bar on deadlifts.  Sometimes I feel like i am slipping on deadlifts bc my freakin' hands are so small.  I have large feet for my size but small ass hands.  That's nightmare for a bball player.  I think if my hands were bigger, I'd have better handles than aquille carr, whose 5'6 and definitely got bigger hands than me.

measurement- very bottom of palm to top of middle finger is 7.1 inches

thumb to pinky spread out as far as possible is 7.8 inches

height is exactly 5'7" and 4/5" so pretty much 5'8" w/o shoes.

Please post your hand measurements and height correlation and tips to cope with smaller hands.  Most ppl I play bball with have 1-3 inch bigger hands than me, rofl.  Its tough to use so much wrist power with smaller hands when shooting jump shot.

Basketball / Sneaker/shoe performance review thread
« on: April 19, 2012, 04:11:39 am »
Don't you just hate it when you have tried out a shoe, bought it, but on the court they are a joke .  This thread is dedicated to performance reviews of sneakers.

My playing style and feet shape: 5'8 pg / combo guard type game, last line of defense usually on D and likes to bolt on offense on opponent 3's.  Gamble a lot on D by allowing slow defenders to drive and pick pocket from behind.  Foot has lost some arch due ballin overweight and is a lil bit wide footed.  Standard feet with big toe the longest toe.

#1 Nike Hyperdunk 2011

Overall 3.5/5

Ankle support 4.5/5

heel to toe action 4.5/5

grip 3/5

cushion 4/5

sizing/shape 2/5

These shoes are dissappointing for one of the most popular bball shoes.  They run way too big and aren't too good for open court play.  Their souls have a lot of cushion (zoom air) but your feet moves around inside, and just doesn't hug the feet the way bball shoes should.  i've tried every size from 8 - 10.5, could not find a good size.  Court grip is kind of bad too.

#2 Kobe VI

Overall 4.5/5

Ankle support 4/5

heel to toe action 4/5

grip 5/5

cushion 5/5

sizing/shape 4.5/5

Excellent shoes.  Similar bottoms to hyperdunks with the zoom air cushion.  Hugs the feet.  Runs okay.  Ankle support not that bad for low, but use brace if you have bad ankles.  Can move like a cheetah in these.  Very light.  Good ventilation.  Kind of like sprinters shoe for basketball.

#3 Nike hypergamer lunar foam

Overall 4/5

Ankle support 3.5/5

heel to toe 5/5

grip 4.5/5

cushion 4/5

sizing 3.5/5

These were decent.  Runs a little narrow near the heal, and runs a tiny bit long.  The heel to toe action is what i liked a lot.  Feels like you are a car in the open court rather then on legs.  tongue is very good bc it has responsive foam.  Good inserts.  Ankle support isn't that good for high top (although imo high tops aren't that much better than low tops).

Is it possible that one's 3 step vertical is higher than their RV?

I was lying on my chest doing leg curls when all of a sudden i heard a clicking/popping sound in my ribs (directly to the left of my left pectoral).  After that there was pain if i put pressure on my chest or ribs.  I know it couldn't have been a fracture bc breathing was ok and pain wasn't unbearable.

I don't believe i injured it before, it did feel awkward though when i was doing some knee hug stretch by rolling on my back few days earlier.

It's painful to press down on my chest / rib cage or lie face down.  I do have another injury sustained to my sternum years ago that is still taking time to heal, sometimes i can hear the cartilage cracking, but that is different from this injury.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
