400m Sprinting or Shorter / Re: Bolt vs history
« on: August 01, 2013, 09:28:59 am »
I think I seen that video before. Pretty interesting but another major factor that didn't get mentioned was the money and professionalism of the sport. It probably wasn't until the 1970s that people could actually make a good living off sprinting. Once there's money on offer people can afford to train full time and commit themselves to it.

Yeah it's really hard to get Graduate positions. I got through to the interview stage for a Graduate position at Fair Work Australia last year. Just to get through to the interview you need to compete against hundreds of other applications. On the day there was 6 people being interviewed and all of them had law degrees except for me. They were giving 3 positions throughout Australia. However, there was 6 people being interviewed in Adelaide. Than they also had another 6 being interviewed in Melbourne, Perth, Sydney and Brisbane. So it ended up being 3/30 chance of gaining a position. Needless to say I didn't get it.

I've managed to get through to the interview stage with the ABS as well for a graduate position. This time the interview is in Canberra next week so hopefully I have more chance of gaining this graduate position than the Fair Work one. I've had like 8 interviews this year for office jobs but so far I've had no job offers from them. The feedback I get back is always that 'we employed somebody with more experience'. But it's impossible to gain experience if nobody gives you a chance. In the past I've done volunteering for 6 months in an office but they just take advantage of you. I was driving 30km 1 way to volunteer and I wasn't getting paid anything. Than they didn't even use my skills or anything all day everyday they just had me doing mundane tasks like photocopying and scanning so I wasn't even gaining worthwhile experience anyway. Even with the 6 months volunteering the majority of companies all look for 2-3 years experience minimum for graduates anyway so regardless of the work experience quality it's fuked.

It's pretty disheartening. I've done hundreds of applications and haven't got shit so a lot of the time I just think university was pointless. It seems like the only jobs for young males in Australia are labouring or trades. I cringe every time I hear the Government talking about their 'education revolutions' and all that bullshit. What's the point of getting educated when there are no jobs available for you when you do graduate. Instead of dumbing down the schools and trying to get every kid to pass year 12 they should make school harder so you actually got to be smart to go to uni. But even than it doesn't matter if you fail year 12 here you can just go to TAFE or do some online pathway course and get into uni anyway. That's why you got soo many people at uni because half of them don't even deserve to be there. Of course the uni's and Government don't care though because it's in their benefit to enrol more students. The unis make more money and the Government doesn't need to worry about adding these people to the unemployment statistics.

100% agree with everything you said. Even in a 'good' uni like Melbourne Uni, there are still so many dropkicks just taking up space. And don't get me started on that education reform bullshit. Holy shit. The funny thing about that is, they want to improve student outcomes by raising the quality of teaching...but where do they think teachers are getting trained? Anyway, I could go on for hours about our piss-poor government and how little gets achieved.

The other thread shows it. But I think running and jumping got more to do than just with fast twitch muscle fibres.
Jumping and running both depend on the elasticity of the tendons and the power which can be produced by the muscles. Someone with a lot of bounce and a large difference between running and standing vert, like early career MJ, would have very elastic tendons, while someone with little difference would be someone who relies mainly on muscular strength, like olympic lifter Pyrros Dimas, who's not a jumper but has an impressive vert.
Concentric strength is most important at the beginning of the 100m, but the middle and end rely more on tendon elasticity. (how someone like carl lewis, who was comparatively weak and didn't lift weights can still be fast).
This is purely anecdotal but I think Asians got better fast twitch muscles than white people but white people got better elasticity of the tendons. Look at Olympic lifters. To be a great Olympic lifter you need to have a lot of fast twitch muscle and Asians dominate at lifting in anything under heavyweight. Same as when you watch sprints the Asian sprinters always get out the blocks really fast and have awesome 60m times but kind of fade out in 100m and especially in the 200m. In the 200m there's been about 40 people who have gone sub 20, in which 5 of them have been white and 0 Asian. In the 100m there's been about 90 who have gone sub 10 with only 1 of them white and 0 Asian. But if you look at the amount of Asians that have gone sub 10.1 to the amount of whites it's pretty even and maybe there's even been more Asians under 10.1 than whites. There could be other factors to that as well like Asians being shorter, which would give them an advantage in the first part of the race coz it's easier to accelerate when you're shorter or if you got shorter limbs it's easier to lift heavier weights because you've got less ROM. Either way I think Asians got pretty good fast twitch muscles but they don't have very good elasticity. Look at Asian calves. They're huge. Look at black calves their small. Yet black people got the best elasticity because small calves usually = speed. White people kind of fall in the middle.
So yeh just a broscience/anecdotal theory but it's something to think about.

Edit- anecdotal evidence- I got 2 guys that I know called Derek and Wallace. Derek is Asian and Wallace is white.
Derek (Asian) PBs-
60m- 6.78
100m- 10.84
200m- 22.05

Wallace (White) PBs-
60m- 7.05
100m- 10.89
200m- 21.49

But once again height comes into it coz Derek is 5'8 while Wallace is 6'2
Either way it's food for thought.

Yeah it's good that the whole uni thing worked out. It's tough for young people in Australia atm. I got no idea what I'm gonna do work wise. I can easily get jobs for labouring but the whole point of me going to uni was to get an office job, which is what I want to do (hopefully generalist HR/consulting).
I'm planning on running again as well starting around November the same time as you so it'll be good. I'm just gonna run the 60, 100 and 200. I'm way 2 lazy to try 400m or any middle distance events and long jump isn't my thing. Triple jump is pretty hard on the joints ay.

Edit- I miss the summer! I took it for granted earlier this year how easy it was to train since it was always warm and dry. Apart from my injury and rugby the reason I havn't done any running so far since April is because of the weather. It's raining almost every day and when it's not raining it's like 10 degrees. Way 2 cold. I feel sorry for European people that have to contend with snow and cold temperatures year round. At least we're lucky that we only got this shit weather for a few months.

7.4 60m is pretty fast. U gonna compete in any races later this year?

Best example: James white.

I chose him from tdub, jusfly, aut etc because he jumps just as high, but he is 6'7'' and he is a profesional basketball player, trying to get a chance in the NBA from 2006 that he was drafted.

Not saying something new here, just making more clear what kind of basketball beasts those guys are!

Wow AMAZING photo and great example vag.  Probably one of the taller ridiculous athletes to still struggle to get a spot.  And the thing is it's not like he is "bad" skill wise.  I'm certain he would still really impress at more than athleticism; he averaged 23 pts a game in the d-league and shot 35% from behind the three point line.  So to recap; he is tall enough, ridiculously athletic enough (far more than necessary), and he is ridiculous skilled.  But still not skilled enough.  NBA basketball players have the unfortunate problem of playing against great defenders which really makes it hard to appreciate just how great they are at their game.  The failures of guys really great players drive the point home pretty well though.

About James White, I wonder if their is some truth to his athleticism being less useful because he jumps off one foot?   I made the point in the beast thread that when height is factored in as an athletic attribute their is a level you can reach where you will get a starting job in the NBA no matter your skill level (eg DeAndre Jordan @  7 feet, Strong, Fast, Can Jump ).   I wonder where the magic point is to where you won't get picked up just on athleticism.  I personally know moderately athletic and highly skilled guys who are in the 6'5'' range who haven't came close to getting a shot..... Where's the sweet spot, if your 6'9 and have athletic ability will you get a spot no matter what?  If James White was 6'7 but jumped off two feet and was a little stronger could he carve out a rebounding, spot shooting, hybrid role based on his ability?    I don't know but I do know the D-League really hurts some of these guys.   Before the D-League you might get an NBA contract coming out of school if you were tall, strong, fast, etc and they would hope you developed.  Now they can put you in the d-league and see if you can develop the technical skill.... If you don't then you never cash a big check.

If you're good enough to play D-league you're probs good enough to go off to Europe and make big bucks. The majority of the players in the D-league are just sacrificing the money of international leagues for the exposure of trying to achieve their NBA dream. Basketball can take you all throughout the world if you're good enough.

Also with the point your making about James White and the 6'5 dudes. I think the term you're looking for is 'tweener'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tweener_(basketball)
Either way it's better to be a tweener than a short coz basketball is a tall man's game.

Yeah as to the effectiveness of drugs I  have limited knowledge and can't really comment since I've never taken steroids or even taken any pre-workout supps. From anecdotal evidence and from what I've read online it seems that steroids can take up to .2 seconds off a 100m for a male but with females they can take up to .4 seconds off a 100m time. I guess it also depends on how the person reacts. Like there are some people that can take steroids and just blow up because their body uses them really efficiently. A perfect example of this theory is Kevin Levrone. Than on the other hand you have people that don't react well to them (most top natural bodybuilders).

Mark Kerr was a pro MMA fighter think he was like a world champ or some shit but here is his opinion on steroids.

"I would never tell anyone to do steroids, would never promote it. But they do work. They give you strength and especially help in the ability to recover between fights. Steroids help an athlete from missing too many days of training. That is the biggest plus." he says matter-of-fact. "But it's not the easy way as some people perceive. They are not going to make you more talented. Realistically, if you were like me with natural talent and aptitude, it will help. Conversely, steroids alone won't make you snap, unless it's already within your nature."

Kerr doesn't want sympathy or clemency for steroid users, but feels a better understanding of the "reality" of the drug is needed as to what it can and cannot do for an athlete.

"Steroids will not make you crazy if the tendency isn't there already just as they won't make you a great athlete if you aren't already. Here's what they will do. If you run the 40 (yards) in 4.6, you can get it down to 4.4. If you bench 400 you can increase that to 450. If you have a vertical (jump) of 36 (inches) you might get to 40. But you have to be great to be greater, it's not as magical as many perceive."

Jamaican sprint star Powell, a former 100m world record holder, confirmed that he had tested positive for a banned stimulant at his country's national trials for Moscow.

This is kinda soft isn't it? It's like being banned from drinking coffee or something.

This link has a more comprehensive explanation-
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/athletics/10178657/Athletics-in-drug-crisis-after-sprint-stars-Tyson-Gay-and-Asafa-Powell-test-positive-for-banned-substances.html

Oxilofrine (also known as methylsynephrine, hydroxyephrine, oxyephrine, and 4-HMP) is a stimulant drug[1] is an amphetamine chemically related to ephedrine and to synephrine. The stimulant was probably being used as a masking agent to cover up steroids or whatever. Yohan Blake got caught testing positive to a stimulant a few years back. I've got no doubt that he's on something 2. Powell and Gay are kind of the last people that I would suspect of being positive though. Like Tyson Gay seemed like such a respectable athlete when you watch his videos or see articles about him in his campaigns for clean sport but I guess that was just a front.

That would be insane for 30 seconds. When stuff like that happens it always seems to go slo-mo as well so it would've felt like he was being attacked for an enternity.

Nah I got fkn marathon runner legs.

Mine are 21 inches but i'm shorter than you and have 13 inch calves so my bones are naturally small.

Edit- My left leg will probs be 12 inches once it comes out of the cast.
