ADARQ & LanceSTS - Q&A / Re: LR vs RL plant for Dunking
« on: February 12, 2011, 07:56:04 pm »
I'm in the same boat as raptor. I've never dunked RL, but I think I could have if I practiced. But I don't think it's worth for me making the switch because my left leg is both stronger and more elastic (since I used to be a one legged jumper). I wish I were better at RL naturally :(

Strength, Power, Reactivity, & Speed Discussion / Re: Squat vs Deadlift.
« on: February 10, 2011, 06:50:22 pm »
In my experience, the deadlift does pretty much nothing for my jump. I learned from trial and error, and as my squat goes up, my jump directly correlates with it. So I just dropped deadlifting altogether and added an extra day of squatting per week, and my gains accelerated. I squat deep, however, so don't think I'm getting zero p-chain work. In fact, my glutes have been naturally huge since I was a kid, and they continue to grow with my quads. My hamstrings, however, are REALLY little lacking, so I'll add GHR's in the future... Squat Mon/Fri and GHR Wed. Something like that.

^^ 100% true, but if you're going from 2.0 to 2.5xbw I would assume you'd already be proficient at squatting!

Strength, Power, Reactivity, & Speed Discussion / Re: de franco box squats
« on: February 10, 2011, 03:31:09 pm »
Well yeah, because the box squat removes like 100% of the reactive component of the squat, and as an athlete you're not glad it does that.
Box squats (Parallel) are a 100%  reactive and explosive movement. Anyone who plays sports (other than bodybuilding) should veer away from Free Squats (Ass to grass).

Explosive? Definitely. Reactive? No buddy. You're pausing on the box for 2 seconds to take away the plyometric portion. Who is this, he reminds me of squidward from TVS.

Crazy Weird Analysis & Stuff :) / Re: Smolov jr "wave loading"
« on: February 10, 2011, 03:28:48 pm »
Yea the monday workout in smolov jr 6x6 is just a joke... but i can never imagine doing 4x9 with that weight. But you're allowed to take as much rest as you need to, so you can turn them into mini-breathing squats that take about a minute and a half to complete for nine reps (10sec from rep to rep).

No , knees are NEVER in front off toes , especially in jumping!

Thank you for making my point. Watch Adarq's Half Squat vid... Every single time his knees pass his toes. Like I said.

I think Vag was being sarcastic here.... did you actually look at the pics? EVERYONE'S knees were in front of their toes on their jumps.

Skip to :13... extra slow at :20

I squat deep as hell because I like it and it feels good. However, looking at what was probably a 37" running jump in this vid (one of my highest ever), I have a really sideways plant with like minimal knee bend. The left knee bends good, but the right knee (since I plant LR sideways) barely bends at all. Also, my lead-in step is pretty damn big. You can also see my side-plant at :04 here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoPmRErov6A

One thing, however, that I notice I do well is that my gather is somewhat quick. Soon after planting my left foot, my right foot comes flying in (I learned this is good from here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ipv_5QIVNt8). I think what you want (and you can see this better in my slowmo) is for the right foot to be planted right before you descend completely and stabalize enough to begin the concentric portion of the jump. In my vid at :23 you can see that my right foot comes in JUSTTTT after the eccentric portion is done.. I'm thinking it'd be better if it came in JUST before, so I'll work on that. I mean, that should minimize GCT a bit and provide more force since two legs can stabilize the eccentric better than one, right?
