It's interesting because (again I'm mentioning this) back in the day I used to do sets of 50 bodyweight squats. Coincidentally or not, I could "load" much better back then (I could feel the muscles compress and release force more then than just a rigid body).

nice, maybe u should experiment with that some time again.. just incorporate, prior to actual squatting etc.. so you're doing both.

People who have tiny calves usually have long tendons and can run fast and jump high.

yup :)

they're uber small. ideas?  :(

are you a bodybuilder ??? if not, then don't worry about it much.. just do calf raises/reactive work/jumps/sprints to get them stronger.. if you're trying to get huge calfs for bodybuilding, good luck, its tough, you're going to have to do lots of very heavy negatives on calf raise and crap like that, which is risky for athletes.

this is beyond hilarious:

"MY LATEST LETTER TO THE WARDEN ( Yes, he actually sent this letter)
by Stephen Watt on Monday, November 1, 2010 at 11:51pm

I write this medical complaint as I have now endured an entire half-year of starvation as an inmate at Seatac. I have already sent out a lengthy, detailed, and impassioned plea for assistance to no avail. The recipient of this request, replied with a cursory sentence fragment reading, "No special diet for non-diabetic." I believe the author of this statement, P.A. Leaf, to be unreasonably biased against my best interests. He was the supervising physician at my intake into Seatac, and our relationship began with him vehemently proclaiming that I, a 7 foot man, could not possibly be taller or even as tall as 6 feet 8 inches, because I was just barely able to pass under the door frame and according to P.A. Leaf, all door frames are standardized to a universal height of 6 feet 8 inches. Thus I believe P.A. Leaf viewed with great skepticism and little compassion my extraordinary metabolic requirements as necessitated by my rather anomalous height.

I trust that I will not need to enumerate the many physical discomforts and pains that accompany a state of starvation, but I would like to point out some of the deleterious mental consequences, which might not be as obvious. Among other names, fellow inmates have started calling me "Beanpole" and "Skeletor" and sometimes amuse themselves by calling attention to my now sunken-in chest by thrusting their fingers inside it. For reference, "Skeletor" is the arch-nemesis of the cartoon character He-Man, who lacks both body fat and muscle. They also joke about my atrophying physical state by suggest that I be placed in the "Suicide Watch" program.

When I came to Seatac I started to grow a beard, an admirable pastime of many fine men in history. Despite the presence of this layer of visual indirection, I am still subject to comments about the gauntness of my face. Frankly, I would like to cut my beard but I am very frightened to see what I will find underneath.

Finally, as I deteriorate, I am dismayed to observe obesity (especially the morbid variety) abound on all sides. It is psychologically debilitating to tiptoe around the unit daily, irritable and enfeebled by low blood sugar, while other inmates, several of whom are nearly an entire YARD shorter than myself, are given the same caloric provisions, causing them to slip into extreme corpulence. Often the mere scent of food is enough to send me, a tax-paying 7 foot American citizen, into a delirious salivating frenzy, while many illegal immigrant inmates looks more like woodland animals fattening up for a winter hibernaculum than aliens awaiting deportation to Latin America. In summary, I implore that my diet be augmented so that I might be able to languish in a federal prison in a manner befitting millions of other Americans without having to deal with the additional imposition of starvation. My next recourse to action will be to elevate my grievance through the various BP forms, and seek legal injunction to halt my corporal decay. I thank you in advance and anticipate thoughtful redress to my concerns, and not merely another form reply hastily transcribed from a bureaucratic manual.

Sincerely yours in custody,

Stephen Watt"

Nutrition & Supplementation / Re: Nootropics
« on: November 02, 2010, 05:12:16 pm »
Thought I would give an update on the dosages I'm using and how I feel.

The past couple of days I have been taking 2g of Piracetam, 1 serving of Power Drive, and 500mg of DMAE. I don't seem to have any side effects off of this. I think I was experiencing some brain fog from taking too much Piracetam.

I have noticed a huge difference in my emotions... much wider range.... I can get extremely excited/amp'd listening to music or thinking about vert or something. Like for the dunk session yesterday I made a special vert mix that I was listening to on the ride over and of course during the session... on the ride over I had goosebumps.

But of course the trade off is I can get angry and become very irritable. I'm pretty sure this is mostly due to coming off of the ssri as these reportedly "blunt" your emotions. Although the irritability is annoying I would rather have the wide range as that is what makes us human. I will just have to learn to deal with the anger/irritability better which I think I will be able to by thinking... when I was on an ssri this stuff didn't bother me and I did fine. So I know what the feeling/mindset is like, just have to recreate it.

Edit: Something else I have noticed, not sure what this is from... "sweets" don't taste as good to me now. I have never been a big sweets consumer but I usually keep at least something like Oreos stocked. Today they didn't even sound good, I ate one then put them away. I've noticed the thought of eating sweets lately doesn't even sound good, I only do it because it is a conditioned habit that it is supposed to taste good but lately as I take the first bite I think to myself this doesn't even taste that good. Next time you eat something sweet really think about how it tastes and ask yourself if it really tastes that good... I bet sometimes you'll realize it doesn't and you're just doing it out of habit and because you have been conditioned to think it tastes good and it's a "treat" for you.

That might not make sense but it's just something I have definitely noticed lately.

u sure ur not on crack?

nice write up.. interesting about the sweets. What's also interesting is that goosebumps response, I get the same thing when I'm jumping my highest, I can literally get goosebumps on command, at the mere thought of jumping. Come to think of it, I recall us talking about that way back.

I wonder how many other people get that..

peace

just saying, you can eat cleaner & gain muscle without putting on very much fat at all, you just need to eat more of the right kinds of foods (eggs/meat/chicken/milk/protein supp/green veggies) & less of the bad kinds of foods (junk/sugars/huge servings of pasta/bread etc).

That's exactly the plan. And to keep the insulin levels low. If I do it right, I could possibly lose fat and gain muscle at the same time as I have a lot of fat to lose.

ahhh, cool man.

The thing is - I find eating overrated and pure marketing. I don't believe one bit in nutrition. I feel like the body will take what it needs from whatever food and you're going to look the same no matter what.

THE REAL PROBLEM is that my left elbow is in severe pain because of the low bar squats... I couldn't finish my workout today because of it. There is continuous pain because I can't get the palm over the bar in the low bar position without extreme strain in the wrist (which is bent beyond belief) and elbow (which is stretched beyond belief).

damn that sucks, what if you purchased a safety squat bar? none of the baseball guys I trained squatted with a regular bar, just because, any little ache in their elbow/shoulders would freak them out, so safety squat bar became invaluable. Safety squat bar squatting is extremely hard though, it straight up kills your core. I dno man, a high bar squat would be less stress on your elbows, hope you figure something out.

Because in order to get a high caloric intake, I need carbs and shit. Fat is going to increase. I can't worry "OMG I don't want to gain fat, so I won't eat that and that". I'm already taking just a protein shake with no carbs, maybe I should plus on the carb thing with that as well.

I'm not really a fan of dirty bulks, this guy is massive & has a pretty good grasp on gaining lean mass, so he's more of an authoritative figure than myself:

http://www.adarq.org/forum/nutrition-supplementation/a-post-by-mountain-man-on-body-composition/msg19994/#msg19994

^^ here's who is giving that advice: http://www.adarq.org/forum/bodybuilding/scary-motherfawkers/msg19988/#msg19988

You can of course eat pasta/bread, but it should be in smaller portions. Stuffing your face with carbs is never a good idea for bulking imo.

Anyway, any time you think about just stuffing your face with trash to put on muscle, just look at this pic, it'll save your life:

dirty bulking = lame.

The advantage that I see for the olympic lifts and their variants over exercises such as jump squats is that they are better scalable and also involve a more complete pattern of hip flexion/extension. That does not mean that jump squats are a bad exercise, Kelly Bagget posted a nice variation here a while ago where you make jump squats and try to touch a band overhead with each rep. I like this idea since it makes progressing in that exercise a lot more quantifiable.

Introduce Yourself / Re: Hey guys
« on: November 02, 2010, 03:46:47 pm »
Hey, just came across this site a few days ago and I really like the atmosphere around here. Everybody seems to be very dedicated and friendly so I figured I might just register and benefit from all the knowledge that is accumulated on this site.
About me, my name is leonel and I'm a 18 years old 6'0''/190lbs volleyball player who wants to get his vertical up, get more explosive/agile all over and increase overall body strength. Short become the best athlete I can be! Looking better is definitely also a important factor to me. For those interested in volleyball, I'm a setter by the way.

yo leonel welcome to the forum, i've known you on DB forum & TVS for quite some time, always hoped that knee issue would clear up completely, though it hasn't, it seems like you have been making some progress & learning to work around it. Most people in your situation would have stopped posting in their journals etc, you've stayed very consistent, props.

Quote
Bad thing is that I have been dealing with knee issues for the last 2 1/2 years and am still not fully over it. But I somewhat found a way to work around it and managed to make some improvements over the last months anyways.

yea I was happy to see that you are now able to train lower, when you posted your journal on TVS.

Quote
Might start up a journal soon even if I am currently inseason and can't do crazy volume, intense workouts at the moment. Partially to save my knees but also to stay as fresh as possible. Still trying to gradually improve my strength and get used to some low level "plyos" again. So I use the season for GPP.

Which exercises are you utilizing for low-level reactive work?

Quote
Talking about my current athletic ability, I have to say that my vertical is pretty weak (24'' standing 27,5'' running) but this is about to change as I just recently started to train my lowerbody again. My upperbody is pretty strong though. Examples: Militarypress 180lbs x 1, Chinups BW + 45lbs x 5... Anyways my goal is obviously to surpass all thess numbers and I think a forum like this really helps with the motivation, guidance along the way, so here I am: READY TO WORK!

very nice upper body strength man! you've made some good progress there damn.. Yeah man start a journal whenever you are ready, it'll be great for this forum to see how you make that lowerbody progress in the face of those knee issues, which hopefully you can completely overcome.

I don't think I can get much better at jumping itself at this point... my movement efficiency is very very high at this moment... it's the lack of strength that's the culprit. It won't be a tragedy if I shy away from jumping for a bit, especially as I gain weight and fat and jumping would only cause great joint shocks and will feel like a sperm whale. It doesn't make much sense in my book. If I were to do "some" jumping, of which I might, I don't believe it would do anything for me to be quite frank.

I won't suddenly forget to jump just because I won't jump for a couple of months.

What makes sense to me is to do some kind of hypertrophy work to increase the muscle size a bit, then follow it with strength work to improve the neural connection of the new muscle (yes I know, I simplify things but you get the idea) with some MSEM every now and then, cut down on the fat, get some plyos after I'm leaner and lighter and enjoy my gains. This is the medium term idea.

why do you have to gain "weight AND FAT" ?

Well then why not do hundreds of bodyweight full squats?

you could, i don't get good depth on bodyweight squats though and they are too easy.. with lunges i get very deep and basically ADA, freefalling into that deep position.

i do hundreds of pushups and it makes my chest stronger, i do tons of pullups/dips but they aren't on that level, if i ever got them to my pushup level i'd be a freak.

WTF , that's unreal !!!  :o  :o  :o

What's your hand size? It looks like you're getting wrist at rim? Or is it just cam distortion?

Mind blown anyway!!!  :o  :o  :o

his hand is 7", there is surely some slight distortion on that highest jump, so what looks like 2-3" down his wrist becomes more like 1" down his wrist or base of hand, which is still 127-128" - 89.5", which is

BEAST

MODE.

haha

ya man ur the human vertec, i give it two thumbs up over here, i imagine you will too after some analysis :D

I think lazyness also comes from not really believe in what you're doing.

Quote
For example I'm lazy doing plyos because I don't believe they're going to help me at this moment.

well, as humans we over-think things, we need to approach training somewhat as a daily fight or flight situation, which incorporates a variety of different energy systems/types of motor unit recruitment.. getting in some plyos/reactive work when you "don't think they help at the moment" becomes futile, because in essence, you need reactive/ballistic work almost daily to remain an athletic human capable of performing at any given moment to fight for your life.. taking out all reactive work in favor of just some slow training won't help in the realms of us being "prey".

so next time you think about not needing reactive work, picture a honey badger coming at you, and your only defense would be to sprint or MR tuck your way to safety.

peace :F
