Right, a gpp type squat to prepare the body for the more intensive demands of the more sport specific spp squat/reactive/jump type movements later on.

A full squat (or as full as one can safely go with good technique) is extremely beneficial for not only jumping but all the other movements that will go along with sport.  Using both gpp and spp methods will always trump using only one or the other.

this too

oh, and this.

In squatting for jumping improvement, IN MY OPINION, the amortization phase, the point in the movement where the bar goes from downward motion to upward, is the single most important part of the lift.  I have seen and strongly believe that the athletes who can turn the lift around the fastest will always have the best carryover to jumping.  It is more about how quickly you can get to top speed at that particular point in the lift, than the overall speed attained during the movement.

Interesting point and I think adarq has said this before in reference to REA squatting and jump squatting. I'm pretty sure I suck at this part of the movement. Any cues/tips on improving it?

yup, that's why I prescribe REA squatting, to aid in the transition.. that's why I also always say to focus on the transition as much as possible, during squatting.

the most important thing definitely is mental, always cueing yourself and making sure to really transition as explosively as possible, in all squat reps.. so lance's nail cue is great etc.

other than that, REA squats/depth jumps/depth drops & jump squats help.

I've found REA squats to be most effective in terms of carry over to the squat.. depth jumps/depth drops definitely can have carry over also, even more so if you're using intense box heights, that also improves the transition during ballistic movements, greater force produced during the "coupling phase", that iso between eccentric and concentric.

? What doesn't have to work as harder? The lateralis?

vmo doesn't.. tychver is probably saying, patella-femoral stability isn't as important with bilateral squatting, so, vmo being the main patella stabilizer, doesn't have to work as hard.

ok got around to making some stills before i drop the vid on my misc footage account.

my highest touch for height came on my very first jump, wtf? then jump 2 and 3 were lower.. that's some odd shit..

all of my dunk makes to the right side of the rim, with this angle, have some major distortion, but they were good dunks

this dude is like 6'3 or so, sprited but almost had one

this dude is like 6'2 i think.. or 6'1.. sprited on this one

its possible if it stays stand up, he was a kickboxing champ at one point, and a few people have proven age in the 40s isnt a big factor anymore ( cotour and lesnar fight)

will he win, probably not, but hopefully he doesn't bitch out

itd be smarter for him to just go back into a kickboxing tournament over in europe or something and stay away from MMA, since it includes a lot more than just stand up

he's too old to go back into kickboxing, he'd get killed.. he actually has a better chance in mma, where the standup, especially on the lower levels, is horrid.

To me, in that picture you look like 3-4 inches away... it's too far away from the camera though and the angle distorts it, so I don't know. Definitely not 1 inch away...

i'm directly under the backboard, behind the net.. see the white line on the ground, i'm directly over that also.. check the proportions. heh

also, explain to me how you get 3-4"? i mean, we clearly see like 1" away on pic, but how do you get 3-4"? you just making up a number or what? lool

ripp was kidding with his 5-6" comment.

Well that certainly isn't 1 inch. Maybe one inch on the monitor screen :D

whatever that means.. congrats though at being blind as fuck.. gj.

If you think that what looks 1 inch from 30 feet away is really 1 inch in reality, then... well... :-*

I'd say it's somewhere between 1 and 2 inches, but still very close. Just look at the proportions and you'll see it can't really be more than that.

Man the day you hit your head is gonna hurt...you'll be jumping up max effort not expecting it, then BANG...gonna be epic though, looking forward to seeing some footage of that.

thank mang

nah it won't hurt, there's a pad there.. lol.. hitting it on pure metal/glass backboard would hurt ya, but not a pad :)

pad feels cool, i hit the other pad at the outdoor-roofed court, that backboard is lower..

If there's anything I ain't, then I ain't an adarqui hater... I couldn't ever be. But again, 1 inch from that camera distance and angle is much more there. If there would've been a one inch distance, then from this angle it would seem his head hit the backboard. It's interesting since Andrew is pretty tough on his jumping in terms of inch-inflation, so it's somewhat surprising, which means he really genuinely believes it's 1 inch. One inch it's two squares on a math paper.

nah dude, im UNDER the backboard.. i could see if i was way in front of it, head near net etc, but im far behind the net in that pic.. in all those head height pics i am behind the net, right under the backboard hehe.

regardless ill hit my head on it and that'll be that.

Well there's nothing to appreciate, really, I was just speaking my mind like I always do. If you were to suck in my mind, then I would've said that... But since you don't, then it's great. There are so few good people to talk about training you can just count them in single digits. You're one of them, although maybe your biggest flaw is you take things personally too quick, just as an observation :P

It's great not to be politically correct these days :D

taking things personally, quick, is a good sign imo..

if you can dish out a severe beating when someone slight's you, that means you're not a sissified coach who is constantly thinking about "image"..

for example, you will piss lance off eventually on here and he will come at you hard, and I will laugh, but it will be all good, because we're all friends trying to improve.. that's how it is in the gym :)

When I first started doing low bar squats, the first thing I have witnessed was GREAT vastus medialis recruitment. That only happened in that first session and never happened again. I have no idea what this means.

quads are strong, vmo is probably adapted.. doubt it's a firing issue.. the quads usually aren't the weak link in a parallel/below parallel squat so, you're not going to get vmo/quad soreness much at all as you progress, they will pretty much always be one step ahead of the hams/glutes.
