Article & Video Discussion / Re: short versus tall athletes
« on: February 14, 2011, 06:40:52 am »
i imagine you've gotten:
1. less fit
2. fatter
3. overly strength trained
4. more emo

And you imagine right. The CoolColJ path baby!

Nah, I really need to work on sprints and suicide-like drills/change direction stuff and get lighter. That should be the priority right now and I'm slowly transitioning into that type of work.

good man, just have fun with it.. the more fit you get, the more explosive sprint-drills you do like that, man, your jumping will skyrocket eventually.. you'll be leaner, handle forces better, produce more force relatively, and get up higher.

boop

;d

lol @ CCJ path, poor guy, wish he woulda got leaner first.

feeling more sick today than yesterday.. but staph lumps went down a bit.. so that's a good sign.. coughing more AFTER squatting, increasing breathing/HR seems to get me coughing more so.. hopefully i wake up feeling better fml.. would love to dunk wednesday.

completely lost my voice too, sucks.

02/13/2011

bw = 150.8
soreness = none
aches/injuries = left nut, left lower back a little after squatting

diet = vit-C-drink + probiotic + 2 bananas + 3-4 chocolate covered cherries (real small but mad good), pot roast (wuth carrots/potatos etc) + small spinach salad + 3 chocolates, 1 banana, training + vit-C-drink, protein/water-drink + vit-C-drink + 1 banana, 3 bananas + PB burrito + protein/water-drink + vit-C-drink + probiotic

fatigue = high

workout: strength
- half squat: 45 @ 4 x 10, 135 x 10, 185 x 10, 235 x 5, 255 x 5, 275 @ 10, 10, 255 x 5 (dead)
- prone rev hyper: with waffles on @ 100, 100, 100,
- glute bridge: 100 <- felt like a feather

glutes/legs felt CRAZY strong........................ like RIDICULOUS.... only problem though, training at 24 hour fitness has made training at my home gym feel messed, the bar feels uneven, really threw me off for those 275 x 10's.. i would have done more but it got in my head.. so bottom line, stay light on my home gym because it's uneven compared to 24hour fitness, very odd.. was extremely noticeable and it effected my sets... must have a leveling issue going on.

crazy how light glute bridges felt, those 45 deg hypers have my hams/glutes MUCH stronger right now.. good stuff

peace

ADARQ.ORG ADVANCED PROGRESS TRACKER

PROGRESS-TRACKER-ARTICLE: http://www.adarq.org/forum/performance-training-blog/the-2011-blueprint-better-gains-through-improved-clarity/

Purpose: To log data in a format that is easier to analyze (for ourselves and readers of our journals), so that training setbacks are avoided & progression is of primary importance, thus making our training as efficient & effective as possible.

How-to: Copy, Paste & modify the template to suit your needs: Include this post at the end of each of your training journal posts by clicking "modify" on your previous post, copy and paste it into the current post, and then add the new data.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS
- DO NOT squat without heels elevated, used to heels elevated, too much sitting back aggravates back injury
- DO NOT deadlift aggravates back injury
- DO NOT overstretch quads, aggravates ankle injury <-- happens every time, STOP IT
- as of 1/15/2011, don't do 325 x 5, instead, hit MSEM singles at 325+, stay 305-315 x 5+
- cut out milk, water + protein shakes from now on, more vitamin C, at least 6 bananas per day, more chicken/eggs
- utilize pin squats more, pin 6 work up then transition into pin 7

CURRENT GOALS
01/11/2011: PROJECT SSR7, get down to 150 or less as soon as possible.. maintain 315 x 5 half squat strength + keep a set of 20 maintained (245-265), fix right ankle, more interval conditioning, don't neglect my necessary exercises

There benefit gets diluted because if your body has already filled it's need for the vitamins and other compounds in bananas it's more than likely gonna have you get rid of em. If possible you should def be eating at least 5 different fruit and vegs a day. If you eat 2-3 bananas that's fine but you should still be eating 4 other different fruits or vegetables.

right that's a good point

not meaning to be a dick or anything, but have you thought that maybe u got the staph infection due to a poor immune system?

nope.... i got it the day i went into an indoor basketball gym, hot/humid, with like 50 people there sweating all over.. i contracted it somehow through a cut/skin opening, that's how staph is usually contracted.

now im getting outbreaks from the original infection 4 weeks ago.

Article & Video Discussion / Re: short versus tall athletes
« on: February 14, 2011, 05:14:01 am »
Hi Guys

I just read an interesting article from Daniel over at free to fly about short versus tall athletes.

http://www.thefreetofly.com/2011/01/short-vs-tall-athletes-jump-training.html

It is a pretty small sample size being used (just Daniel and a mate of his) but it is still an interesting theory.

I would love to hear your thoughts coaches about what Daniel has to say.

Cheers

Jack

well, that's why we promote half squatting for lanky (long leg/short torso) athletes (basketball players, sprinters, high jumpers, etc) here.. more progress can be made with that ROM than deep, and deep will also improve as a result of half improving.

shorter athletes usually have less of a difference between SVJ & RVJ from what i've seen.. they utilize their leverages better in movements that require less 'pre stretch', so, for them to improve SVJ/RVJ, they will USUALLY have to squat alot more than someone who is considerably taller, but that's easier for them to do so in the first place.. regardless of height though, a guy (A) who is 5'9 (short torso, long legs) vs a guy (B) who is 5'9 (shorter legs, longer torso), in general, guy A is going to struggle more with the same weight as guy B, if it's the same depth.. guy (A) might consider raising his depth a bit (half) to experience faster progress and more performance gains.

it's kind of how Arowe squatted 2xBW ATG for his 37 RVJ, and i squat 2.2 HALF for my ~37 RVJ.. If I were to go ATG, i'd be lucky to hit 1.5xBW. If we "normalize" the ROM, he's squatting WAY more than me at either half or deep squat, for the same RVJ.. he's 5'7.5 in shoes, i'm 6'1 in shoes.

pc

Well I have that sitting height to standing height ratio of under 50, 49.7 (long legs), and I gain what, 2 inches off a run? Sure, I'm not jump efficient off two feet but still, you'd expect better. I also find it much easier to jump off a standing vert or off one step than the "average" basketball player at my height.

you're fat, strength dominant, and out of shape.

THAT'S WHY.

real talk, i love you though.. remember your runup speed when you were much younger? you looked like a rocket.. sure you're much stronger now, but you looked pretty fast back then.. now you look alot slower (but with more strength).. i imagine you've gotten:
1. less fit
2. fatter
3. overly strength trained
4. more emo

I normal squat 1.5xbw and i'm 6'1 with shoes on.....and my vert ain't 37..actually i think my max vert has probably ~34 before the winter :)
I hasve long legs and a shorter torso...so what's the verdict chief?

you're still going through puberty and your hip mobility is good.

you dunked in 8th grade apparently and havn't really dunked much since then.

you utilized vertfreak, got massive gains, then looking back, dunked better before VF, then dissed VF, and are now back 2 promoting VF.

the verdict is, you seem to be all over the place, so, the data is hard to analyze..

the result from your analysis function is UNDEFINED

analyze(bmully)

result = UNDEFINED.

for example, compare that to

analyze(raptor)

result = got fatter, got less fit, became too "strength dominant", increased emo levels.

you lack data bmully.

Article & Video Discussion / Re: Spot reduction may actually be possible?
« on: February 14, 2011, 05:06:58 am »
this is pretty interesting actually, because i've been wondering how i could get completely shredded while keeping my lower back fat unscathed... i just love me some lower back fat.

i don't really see the point of the article to be honest, if you're going to get a very athletic body composition for sprinting/jumping, fat won't be an issue.. there will be really nothing to spot reduce, it'll be low regardless.

Quote
Fasted morning cardio is the ideal time to use these spot-reducing tricks. As one Oxford study notes: "In adipose tissue, the flow of fatty acids across a cell membrane is bidirectional. It's outward in times of net fat mobilization, such as fasting and exercise and inward during the postprandial (just fed) period." (Frayne, 1998) Of course, most of the day we bodybuilders are in a fed state.

wut the god damn frick..

i dno i have a hard time reading articles anymore or caring about minutia, i don't even care what muscles exist in the human body anymore, or how anything actually works.. i see movements, force over time, visual changes to physique, how someone is feeling based on the hollistic approach, etc..

maybe im just ranting but i don't give the least of a shit anymore what happens at the cellular level..

purposefully trying to "forget" everything i was taught in exercise science @ FAU has truly made me a better athlete/coach.. without a doubt.

ok what was i talking about again, my rant was kind of 2-faced considering i do enjoy the peer-reviewed study subforum of this website.. lol

Article & Video Discussion / Re: Two foot jump technique
« on: February 14, 2011, 04:59:32 am »
I tend to agree with you in large areas of what you said, but I have personally increased a guy's jump instantly by four inches just by hinting what he should do. He has great strength but he was always jumping "weird", quad-driven etc. I just said to him he needs to throw his legs forward more and use his hips instead of just pushing with his quads that much.

And then he just jumped ~4 inches higher immediately. I was like WTF? I mean really, when I think about it now, that should've been even more shocking than it was. So it works for some people. Not sure if it was some placebo effect where he just said to himself "I'm going to jump higher now, this guy knows his stuff so I'll jump higher" and put more effort into his jump (could've been, who knows?) but he did do what I told him to do in terms of technique and got up higher. It's not like he jumped with the same technique as before and got higher.

how did you measure the before & after, was it simply visual?

Article & Video Discussion / Re: Two foot jump technique
« on: February 14, 2011, 04:58:10 am »
From personal experience I have never seen anyone gain inches by changing their technique and I have seen quite afew people try. IMO even if you have sub-par coordination, once you get past the total beginner stage your body will automatically take in consideration your strengths/weaknesses and in return make you perform the best possible jump to maximize your strengths.

yup, well said, finding weaknesses from their plant/runup is the most important aspect of analyzing technique.. the most someone is going to improve on a double or single leg jump, if they've already been jumping their whole life, is 1-2" from some form changes.. you could improve your high jump by like 8-12" with form techniques though, but that's not on actual vert ;d

Quote
The only real use I see in over analyzing someones jump technique is to find out their weaknesses (ie. posture, flexibility, inhibited muscles, and more commonly strength/reactive ability) so they can go out and work on it (ie. stretching, mobility work, lifting, plyometrics).

oh i responded to that above ^

right for example, if you come in slow, quads = weak.. if you collapse really hard onto your heel, ankles = weak.. if you come in completely straight and try to jump very linear with the hoop, chances are you're pretty strength dominant and need alot of work in the reactive department.. if your depth is very low, again, strength dominant.. if your depth is very high, could be a problem, sometimes it isn't, most of the time it is, usually need more glute work or to consciously think about getting deeper.. if the runup has a stutter, your jump technique sucks, that's your weakness.. if you take a huge penult step, doesn't matter, short penult step, doesn't matter.. if your heels barely touch the ground, chances are you are very reactive, very good sign, usually need more strength.

stuff like that.

Quote
Although he does give some decent information in the videos some of what Linkenauger is saying is complete garbage. There is a reason why someone is slowing down before takeoff. There is a reason why someone is collapsing during takeoff. There is a reason why someone is barely accelerating in their approach. There is a reason why someones GCT is too high, etc etc. In most cases try to "fix" this and perform it the "right" way and someone will be jumping even lower.

yup great point, that's why im a fan of improving max strength, improving reactive strength, improving explosive strength, improving body composition, and getting those jump reps in.. if you do all of that, form will automatically change and fall into place..

for example, when i squat with frequency and barely jump, no reactive work, i become more of a strength dominant jumper, my heel collapses in the plant, i'm more of a "linear jumper" (squared to basket jump), my runup usually sucks.. once i phase in tons of reactive work, say a ton of MR halftucks (getting to the point where i can hit 10 x 30-50), i stay off my heels, runup improves a ton (much faster) and i plant with more of a rotation, digging myself into the ground sideways..

none of that is conscious, it just happens based on what im strengthening... that's how it is for everyone, not just me.

Quote
The only credit I give him is for being able to analyze the videos and point out what could be better, thats it. To turn around and say "oh your approach is too slow, go faster", "your knee collapses, dont collapse", "you are sinking your hips too low, less bend" and then follow it up by (real example from one of his videos) "If you dont decelerate before takeoff Im sure you will gain ~4 inches" its complete scammer talk. The jumpers problems and his analysis are obvious as hell, I mean what he does after and the promises he makes are complete bullshit.

ya he's full of shit, he's always trying to find an 'edge'.

"omg im so happy with all of the feedback ive been getting from the form jumping videos" = lmao.

Quote
What has happened in all cases I have seen ie. someone approaches too slow, if they increase their approach speed to "optimal" levels they are not strong enough to handle the force which will lead to increased GCT or horizontal jumping, and so on and so forth.

yup

Quote
Best thing you can do is to have a great workout plan, do all the right things in the weightroom/kitchen/court and your body will know what to do better then what anyone could tell you online in a couple of sentences.

yup

Quote
Also one of his biggest bullshit stories that probably gets a ton of people is that "day" where he woke up with the right technique and added ~7 inches or whatever to his high jump. Technique is much more important in high jumping and needs to be taught. High jumping, especially for beginners which is what he was, is obviously not all about how high you jump. He kind of puts on as if he gained 7 inches on his vertical... His vertical could have easily stayed exactly the same as Im sure it did, and he still could have gained 7 inches on his high jump by improving his technique (which Im sure 95% of everyone here or his customers couldnt care less about).

Anyways those are just my opinions, take them with a grain of salt.

EXACTLY........................................... 8 instant on a high jump, possibly, with high jump coaching, but 8" on actual vert?

the

fuck

bottom line, epic post by joner.

long legs!

Always knew my legs were long. I squat low bar, athletic stance always past paralell. I have to shoot my knees forward though. If I try to PL squat (static knees) I end up folded like a briefcase and lifting with my back  :o

ya i definitely see how that would happen from the video

My squat is very much like what Mark Ripptoe prescribes. I lift on a wedge board too (too cheap to buy oly shoes)

Below link to a vid of 150kg x 1. Made 160kg recently but no vid.

I've tried oly squats but I just can't get all my junk (legs) out of the way without putting the knees out in the next postcode. Gets dodgy over 110kg and upsets my patellar tendonitis  >:(

i checked side angle, didn't look bad, your hip mobility really kicks in as you hit depth, even with those long legs.. i personally don't recommend rippetoe style squats but people have made great progress on them, such as steven-miller etc..

my recommendation is always, hit "your own unique depth" allowing some knee shift forward + keep a more upright torso, this could be atg, slightly below parallel, or slightly above parallel.. everyone is different, you'd probably have pretty good form on it with slightly above parallel.

if you ever decide to play with it, remember you can use a few squatting styles.. you could:
1. alternate styles per session
2. work up using a deeper depth, then transition into a half depth
3. hit a block of deep then transition into a block of half, block = 4 weeks perhaps

stuff like that.. bottom line, with an SHR of 48, perhaps squatting above parallel would feel really good...

one VERY nice way to squat half, is to pin squat.. pin squats shit all over box squats.. set the pins to your half depth, unrack, lower, pause, reset a bit if you need too, explode up.. pin squats are very useful.

anyway man, good stuff, your chan is very nice you're putting in work.. that quarter squat crap you did was tuff, lockout hold, then pin squat quarter, haha..

all the lebron haters make me laugh :uhhhfacepalm: everyone said by him going to miami he was admitting he cant get it done on his own. He's leading that team. First off, dude went back to cleavland and just destroyed them, went into LA on christmas and got the job done, and has just been a complete beast on a top 3 team in the league. He's a candidate to win MVP because of how much hes doin for that team. He guards every position. He's the best player in the league and haters just cant except that.

yup, he's the best athlete/player in the nba, well, best athlete could also go to derrick rose or blake.

Quick question, why does EVERY city boo him now? its rediculous. Fucking ORLANDO bood him, doesnt he live like 30 minutes from Orlando?

ya it's pathetic..

here's something i posted in zetz journal the other day, it relates:

"not to go off on a rant or anything, but, i find that kind of unity odd.. i've never had it.. i've never felt that kind of 'unity' with my high school, college, country, or anything.. i lack that "my bleh is better than yours", fill that in with country, school, team, anything.. it's odd.. like for team sports, in reality, i don't really support any team, i just support the players that I follow.. like I watch nba now for lebron/blake griffin and stuff like that.. i remember watching a playoff game with the spurs, and tim duncan got hurt, at the opponent's arena... and everyone was cheering him off the court, even though he was hurt/being helped out/into the locker room.. it's odd, i genetically seem to lack a 'blind support' for some kind of state or organization confined to some borders etc.

dno, weird rant, but videos like that make me think about it..

a good example of it would be the pacers/detroit pistons incident, where those home fans were just going apeshit, then finally someone throws a drink on artest... to me that's just unfathomable.. that's such a deep loyalty to a team/franchise that doesn't truly have any loyalty to you, odd.

odd

odd

it's interesting to me how people can "hate" a player so much.. lebron is just getting paid to play ball, everyone needs to chill the fuck out.. no one owns him, he doesn't owe anyone anything.. etc
