bump, mountain man to the rescue.

Over the past few weeks, I've made it my daily goal to consume 8 whole eggs and 3oz of dark chocolate. I hit that goal about 5 days a week. I've had my suspicions about the ultra fast digesting whey proteins in the past (they're absorbed too fast; the body doesn't know what to do so it converts the proteins to sugar. Proteins don't do much good serving as sugar), and am forgoing having them now. I'm content with the slower digesting wheys and am even mixing them with even slower digesting casein containing cottage cheese post workout and...better sit down...even mixing in some fat. My post workout meal is more reminiscent of mother's milk (the stuff we were meant to grow on). Over the course of these past four weeks, I've been eating lower carbs in an effort to lose fat; muscle gain wasn't my current concern. I've added in the extra eggs, extra dark chocolate, and the change to the post workout meal (which is sometimes a breakfast, lunch, or pre workout meal, too). I've eaten less than maintenance, and gained muscle - while losing fat. I've never been more vascular.

Dumbell BSS FTW!

Man I loved those...These videos remind me of the old good times...you know, when I actually had two knees LOL!

I commented about how "close" your stance looked to me the first time I saw you doing barbell bss, but if you're more comfortable that way I guess it's fine ;)

^^ esav had a diesel BSS.

thought this deserved its own thread.. dno find it pretty cool, i can't remember ever seeing a 'dunk video' like that.. meaning people just out dunking with their fam/kids having a good time.

word.

I'm also trying to work up to being able to do the natural glute ham raise after seeing the video you posted on the motivational thread,

nice :) how much progress have you made?

you managed to do it yet adarq?

nope I got lazy with pmghr's.. I suck at them & it hits my hamstring tendons a bit too hard, so I just hit 45 degree hyper hard, now that I have access to one..

for anyone else that is wondering what he's talking about:

You might be coming from another plant. Admit it, that's a strong possibility.

hm? what you mean?

btw i first read plant=planet, so i was like  :uhhhfacepalm: but now im like ??

not sure, even with an insane running jump, my SVJ is still going to be WAAAAAAY lower.. picture stefan holm's SLRVJ vs his SVJ, really huge difference.. my SVJ would definitely be better than his 24, shit it already is lmao, but i don't see it improving to 35+" simply by getting those stats we mentioned.. i'd have to practice SVJ's a ton, which I hate... though, once i get to that level, i might suck it up and do that just so I can try to "master SVJ".

peace man!
true, i hate SVJ, just feels so akward. But ya man go get that 140. Do you have anytime time frame goal as to when you want to be down to that weight?

nah no time frame, the sooner the better.. even though my "genetics" prefer me to be very skinny/light, getting down to 140 is going to be hard from a diet sense (because i'm not putting in the type of cardio that has gotten me that low before, ie boxing/running/jump rope training).. I definitely have the fat to lose, which sounds insane but it's the truth haha, so diet is the #1 issue.. so far, cleaning up my diet the last few days and need to make a push to 145, that'll take about 4 weeks if I don't wimp out.

ya when I go to do an SVJ, I feel "empty", I just don't want to even do that style of jump.. people who don't mind SVJ'n or enjoy it, never understand what i'm talking about.. but ya it just feels very awkward and there's really no motivation for me to jump in that style.

I was watching you 11" jump video and I saw that when you jumped you did a butt kick then forced your legs back down. I watched a football player on YouTube jump to grab money of the ceiling a he did it twice in the air does that get you even more air. I tried practicing that. It doesn't come natural to me, but it looks like it helps a lot.

no!!!! :)

try not to think about that stuff.. if you watch elite dunkers/jumpers, they all have different jump/plant styles etc.. air up there for example, jumps nearly stiff legged as he's in the air (on his max jumps).. it definitely won't get you "more air", it just adds to the "illusion" of more air.. but if you think about stuff like that during maximal effort movements, it'll cause too much "interference" and cause your jumps to suffer.. so I wouldn't force it, that's for sure..

Cool observation...imma keep that in mind next time I jump off 2 legs.

good observation yes, useful no :F

we've had talks on this forum about it before, don't let stuff like that get in your head.. the only reason you would do that would be to make dunks "look better" etc...... from a stylistic standpoint.

I went grocery shopping and had some food, my legs feel so light right now it's ridiculous... they feel crazy strong.. only problem is the ham tendon very slight strain, that could cause me to push friday's dunk session to saturday, whack... hoping after i sleep though, that it'll be 100x better, stuff like that usually happens with me.

pC folks.

Yeah that's a good point. If I bend forward while doing the BSSs I load the quad anyway, so...

By the way - does anybody have any comments on my 1-2 jump squats in terms of loading/rebound speed etc?

i thought they looked good, i mean the speed wasn't "Bad" but it is kind of "bad for 30kg" considering you squat 130kg plus.. so that's where the speed is bad.. it's really not that bad though, you're moving what % of your actual 1RM? like 20%? should be a little faster and a bit more jump height at that % no doubt.. so just keep working on it & really focus on the transition + maximal acceleration.

ok so here's my first blog entry:

i've been doing the stretches for 3 days now.
my flexibilty really went up but my muscles are kind of sore (i think thats also because i hit the weights damn hard on tuesday). i feel kinda loose and agile when i walk around.

but when i step on the court.. i feel like im less explosive than before. im slower in defense, my first step is slower and what bothers me most is: my VJ has decreased!!!!!!!

i dont exactly know why that is so, but i think it's because my body is not used to having loose muscles yet. so it doesnt know what to do with them and how to effectively do athletic movements with them.

but i'm not even thinking about aborting the programm now. ill keep doing it and see how it changes my VJ over time. because i cant really see any reason why being flexible should make you run slower or jump less high. because all of the top 100m sprinters, long jumpers, triple jumpers etc. are flexible as shit!!! and it doesnt look like it makes them less explosive lol.

peace

well, as long as you're lifting hard, those yoga poses/stretching won't cause any problems, in fact it can help.. right now your body could be having problems understanding the "new length-tension relationships" you are causing, based on your new flexibility/mobility routine.. it might take a little more than a week to feel explosive again. I have no doubt that, if you lifted hard in addition to those exercises, your vert would not suffer.. if you however place more emphasis on those exercises than lifting hard/jumping hard/sprinting hard, then yes, your vert/power will suffer greatly.

I wouldn't abort 3 days in, go at least 2 weeks :) If you do happen to lose some vert because of the daily flexibility/mobility work in those 2 weeks, you need to understand that whatever vert you "lose" you will easily gain back by ceasing to perform that mobility 'program'.

all of the top 100m sprinters/high jumpers etc are NOT flexible as shit.. some are extremely "tight".. whatever your "natural flexibility is", you want to improve it slightly, you don't want to go overboard by trying to become a contorsionist is not going to help one bit, it'll definitely hurt.. make sure you are doing those stretches/mobility work LIGHTLY, don't force anything to extreme ROMS.... i have a feeling this is why you are so sore, you are stretching TOO hard.. a slight stretch is still a stretch, it's much less intense on the fascia surrounding the muscle, which can easily experience very small tears due to TOO much intensity during the stretch (too much intensity = too much stretch).

as always, progress SLOWLY... do not overstretch.. by overstretching you are definitely confusing your CNS, i have a feeling this is what you are doing.. when CNS gets confused, all of your "motor programs" need retuning based on the new level of flexibility you have, and this is why your jumps can turn to crap immediately.. but if you stick with it everything should come back, picture it as you are "reprogramming a computer" somewhat... it's going to take a few weeks, as long as you're lifting heavy, you should be alright and experience either:
- no gains
or
- gains

peace man

lmao i have zero hamstrings and all quads/glutes and its due to squatting and not deadlifting, and my svj and rvj (both 1 foot and 2 feet) have massively improved since I dropped deadlifting.

x2, i don't even think i have hamstrings..

:D

quadnation4lyfe.

does this mean that I am wasting my time doing deadlifts and romanian deadlifts to try and increase my vertical jump?

nope.. getting every muscle group generally strong is beneficial.

deadlifting has carry over to squat, it will hit your glutes, hams, and erectors very hard, also it gives you nice traps.. rdl's are good assistance for general hamstring strength.

hamstring strength is important for protecting the knee during extension, also they are very important in sprinting.

Damn man i wonder why you cant get any sleep, seeing how you only got 3 hours of sleep youd imagine youd be knocked out once your head hits the pillows.

ya i was, but, then i woke up and im feeling kind of fresh.. wtf

Any weird changes in diet?

ya, i was thinking it could be the diet changes.. i've been eating more eggs and less carbs... perhaps it's having an influence right now.. usually when i go low carb i get alot more aggressive, but this sleep issue is something different.

it's very confusing, i feel like im on meth and i don't know what being on meth feels like, but i could only imagine... HEH

Quote
Nice squats though, i like the idea of pin squats, im deffinetly going to give them a try when i start training again after AAU.

ya man they are amazing i've always loved them.. using them now is a great way to mix it up so i don't get as stale constantly free squatting.. plus coming off pin's keeps my depth in check.

Quote
If you got down to 140 with a 405 half squat you would be flying like crazy man, head at rim no doubt,

ya man, that is fact.. gotta do it, it's within my grasp for sure.

probably a 2 hand grab off a standing jump if you were that light and had that kind of power i imagine. go get it man!

Fuck, sorry to hear about your grandpa. That has to be so hard, I mean seeing him like that again and again... I just won't comment anymore on that subject unless I want to post in the emo thread.

thanks man, ya he is completely immobile.. my dad was trying to put him from toilet to his 'bed' when something went wrong and he fell.. so dad woke me up to come help.. its alot easier to pick him up with two people that's for sure. sometimes i write 'grandpa deadlifts' in my journal when i have to lift him alone.. there's tons of steps you have to take, put on shoes so he has grip, get wheelchair near by, put pillows around just in case. usually i just deadlift him up like he's a sandbag tho hehe, lifting heavy for legs helps.

man i don't understand why im wide awake..................

only ~3 hours sleep again, and im wide awake..  i would still be sleeping had i not been woken up, but, usually i feel extremely tired and go right back to sleep.

my erectors are really tight, so are hamstrings.. im just stretching while computering i dno if ill go back to sleep or not...

:/

i mean if i get tired id sleep sure, but i dont get why im not tired.. this is odd.
