Interesting, a 4 INCH IMPROVEMENT from being 'angry' lol..

I am pretty much getting the concept of what happened, but would this work for single leg jumping too?

Because whenever I try to accelerate hard and fast in my last 2-3 steps, sometimes on my plant, I feel like I'm hammering my plant down HARD, but this causes me to jump un-smooth.  I was thinking, since single leg jumping is less dependent on strength/force transferred into the ground, wouldn't forcefully trying to add extra 'oomph' in the plant on a SLRVJ be useless?  Or am I wrong?

Raptor.  It was already pointed out about your reading comprehension skills. I am a newbie here so I wont criticize or be mean but after your comment I did a little reading about you to see if there was any validity to your comment.  Needless to say, what I found was not surprising.  I just wanted to say thanks for the motivation.  I now do have some direct goals.  Not only can I move heavier weight than you in all areas already, I now will exceed any vert you have ever achieved.  Your comment about wanting everyone on here to fail really rubs me wrong.  Be ready for some video of me completely dominating you in your vert goals that you have been training for.  Good luck in your next passion.

LOLLLLLLLLLLL!

Relax man,

In my opinion, if you still have this mentality, you shouldn't start training again. It would be a waste of time. If you don't, then welcome.

There was nothing negative to take away from that reply, he just mis-read or didn't read through it all, or just sucks at reading.  He didn't mean anything by it, besides the truth from what he initially understood.

Besides, if he is considering quitting his vert journey, what can you say about it when this is your first time ever training for over a month, and it took having a personal trainer to do so, while he has been able to consistently train for multiple years.

The only thing I agree with you is your comment on what Raptor said about wanting the rest of us to fail.

Talk is small for someone who has trained for only a little over a month and hasn't even started a journal here yet.  Do work, then talk.

How old is he?!

Also, as for extra glute/ham work for single leg jumpers to supplement squats, what's your favorite exercise?

BSS?  GHR?  Dead Lift?

Thanks.

You guys are going to make him cry...

Thanks for the help.  ;D

Anyone else know how to get better at balling?

LOL.  Dude just practice hard and consistently.  There are no secrets to getting better at basketball -.-

Any tips for how to improve my shooting/dribbling? As much as people here hate on programs and people like Taylor Allan, some of what he said kinda made sense to me (the whole being a good pratice game player that can only knock down oepn shots versus a player who actually can score at will.)

Oh wow, Taylor Allan must be a genius cause he said that........ :uhhhfacepalm:  EVERYONE knows that.  Of course you gotta practice hard and practice at both practice pace and game pace.

Clever marketers like Taylor Allan say those things (which are true statements) but make it sound like some sort of secret so you (the customer) will think they have found the secret product they sought after for so long, when in reality.....  Do I need to finish?

Just go practice hard.  Consistency and your mental game is key.  Consistently work on your game and as you do this, you will be more confident.  As you get older and more experienced in basketball, you'll see what a big difference your mentality in basketball makes.

Article & Video Discussion / Re: What makes an "elite" athlete"
« on: August 18, 2011, 06:27:18 pm »
I would say you are elite in the vertical department.  40"+ is part of a VERY small percentage of athletes.  I don't know how fast you are though, but if you aren't, with some practice sprinting, you should be fairly fast since vertical and sprinting have similar correlations.

Now Lebron might be one of the most athletic people ever.  6'8" 250+ with a ~44" vertical and is very strong.

Everyone will have different criteria though when it comes to categorizing someone as "elite".

I personally think you can say t-dub is an elite athlete even if he turned out to be weak as hell and slow (which I'm sure is not the case at all), because he's a jumper and in that sense it doesn't get any more 'elite' than him.

But yeah, if I would categorize you as an "elite" athlete for a BASKETBALL player, I wouldn't put you there yet, because although you have the vertical, from what I've seen in your bball videos, you aren't 'elite' explosive on your drives and stuff.  But remember the post I put in your journal?  If you keep practicing  bball specifc moves, you have the potential to be elite in those as well.  (I do realize those videos may not be going 100% and it was a small sample but still)

Carmelo comes to mind, someone who is very explosive off the dribble, but doesn't have "elite" vertical.
Someone like Jordan Farmar who has a 44" vertical doesnt really have the quickness/explosiveness of someone with a 44" vertical. (like you)

Derrick Rose is an example of both.  He is explosive and quick as his vertical indicates.  I think his vert is 45"  I saw him get his head on rim before.

Never seen you dunk on that court before...

Anyways, adarq, on my SLRVJ I feel some collapsing on the ankle in the plant.  To remedy this, does it just come down to strengthening my calves (calf raises) ??

Also, is there a way to get "stiffer ankles"?
Thanks.

Nutrition & Supplementation / Re: Timing of Caffeine
« on: August 17, 2011, 01:23:26 pm »
This thread died 3 months ago, but whatever.  So today I bought some caffeine pills and experimented with them today, because I have important jump session tomorrow.  Prior to today, I remember that whenever I drank coffee, I never really felt it affecting me much.  No 'twitchiness' no obviously increased alertness or whatever.  Today I ate lunch at 1:00pm and took 200mg caffeine (4 pills, each pill is onlt 50mg, even though the box says no more than 2 at a time) at 3:20, and went to ball at 4.  I didn't feel any extra "pop"

^^^Do you think this indicates I am not sensitive to caffeine at all?

Hey I don't know if you guys have tried this, but today i just set a 1.5 inch PR on SLRVJ with caffeine on an empty stomach.  No protein, just caffeine (and tyrosine).  I usually go with 200mg tablets, but i went on an empty stomach, so i cut my caffeine tablet in half.  I just have to say DAMN.  Definitely don't need as much caffeine on an empty stomach.  Feel Great  :headbang: caffeine is still in the system lol.

I wanna try this.  I'm going to eat big tonight.  What should I do tomorrow?  Gonna go ball/jump at 4.  Wake up around 10-11, eat 1 small meal and then nothing else til 4 and take 200mg caffeine?  Would 300mg be unsafe on an empty stomach?  I wanna jump with that extra juice caffeine can give you, cuz I won't have any competitive pick up games or anything to get me primed.

-Impossible to be 6' / 6'1'' wingspan / 31'' maximum running vert and be able to dunk 10'. I am 6'1'' with 6'5'' wingspan and i still need ~34'' to dunk.

Huh? I'm 6'0 with a 6'2 wingspan and I can dunk with a ~30 inch vert. I just need to get my thumb of the palming hand over the rim and that's it.

WTF?  You would have to palm the ball damn good , and i still doubt you could do it. What is your standing reach? Mine is 7'11'', 30'' is only 10'5'' for me.
Generally i'd say you need 8 - 10 inches above rim to dunk clean , i'd accept 7'' with perfect palming and timing and everything, but 5'' is pushing it too much.

On a SLRVJ, you don't really lose height on your jump with the ball, and I agree with Raptor, you can (not all the time) but dunk with 5-6inches over the rim.  If you have a powerful arm swing with the ball, the ball with hover on your fingers (not palm)and you can swing it hard to dunk it without losing control of the ball.  No?

I have dunked clean on a 9'6" rim before when I was jumping 35" at max (10'0" touch) using what I described above.

What did you do to measure your body fat %.  Unless you got it tested with calipers by someone very experienced with using them, you probably got a misread.  If you used electronic devices that send pulses through your body, they are as reliable as shit.  I am ~12-13%, but those devices said I was 5% LOLLL.  Even if you used calipers, there is room for error.

Vag, maybe he has a small head and short neck, and his shoulders are at a much higher starting point than yours? LOLLL
