philray is natty. He has progress pics of himself since he started lifting... looks natty, no huge jumps. He's also the oldest and has been working out the longest.
Babo claims he's natty. Skeptical though because he blew up just like zyzz/chestbrah in the same time period and they are open about using gear. Babo says his grandpa or something was some successful bodybuilder or something though so he claims he has very good genetics.
Manlets ftw
None of them are natty. And all of them "look natty". None of them have impressive physiques that you couldn't get naturally.
can we have a rule on this forum to never use the term "natty" again? just such a bro douche bag thing to say

Purpose: To log data in a format that is easier to analyze (for ourselves and readers of our journals), so that training setbacks are avoided & progression is of primary importance, thus making our training as efficient & effective as possible.
How-to: Copy, Paste & modify the template to suit your needs: Include this post at the end of each of your training journal posts by clicking "modify" on your previous post, copy and paste it into the current post, and then add the new data.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS - DO NOT squat without heels elevated, used to heels elevated, too much sitting back aggravates back injury - DO NOT deadlift aggravates back injury - DO NOT overstretch quads, aggravates ankle injury <-- happens every time, STOP IT - as of 1/15/2011, don't do 325 x 5, instead, hit MSEM singles at 325+, stay 305-315 x 5+ - cut out milk, water + protein shakes from now on, more vitamin C, at least 6 bananas per day, more chicken/eggs - utilize pin squats more, pin 6 work up then transition into pin 7
CURRENT GOALS 01/11/2011: PROJECT SSR7, get down to 150 or less as soon as possible.. maintain 315 x 5 half squat strength + keep a set of 20 maintained (245-265), fix right ankle, more interval conditioning, don't neglect my necessary exercises

i HOPE bolt isn't juiced, but i also don't really think he is juiced.. he could have used ped's during his down period between 400m and 100m, but nothing has been proven.. alot of his teammates get busted but he remains clean.. he'd have to fail something or have some people close to him start throwing out accusations, none of which has happened.
casey combest is a "spring" who is extremely strong.. has nothing to do with his physique.. he just has insane bounce, sure he could have been on juice but no one has come out saying he was, he didn't fail anything, etc.. you can't get that kind of bounce with juice, it's natural ability.
i dno, my friend eddie (who was in my dunk vids), was "striated" at all times, just insanely lean, ripped to shreds, at 145-150 lb bodyweight/6'0 in shoes.. pretty sure he was at least 6% at all times.
some people are ridiculously lean.
You know how i looked some years ago. Skinfold caliper gave me 3,3% bf, bioimpedance just said "error". I surely wasn't 3,3% bf!
What most people think is 5% is more like 10%bf in reality.
plan for tomorrow, get in a shitload of sessions of reactive + RDL + pullup + calve raise, i'm planning to hit 8 sessions.. so 8 LTMP-VOLUME sessions..
thursday i will probably alternate RDL/high rep squat, friday will most likely be complete rest, sat will be flying dunking

CURRENT GOALS 01/11/2011: PROJECT SSR7, get down to 150 or less as soon as possible.. maintain 315 x 5 half squat strength + keep a set of 20 maintained (245-265), fix right ankle, more interval conditioning, don't neglect my necessary exercises

i dno, my friend eddie (who was in my dunk vids), was "striated" at all times, just insanely lean, ripped to shreds, at 145-150 lb bodyweight/6'0 in shoes.. pretty sure he was at least 6% at all times.
If Andrew does 225x50, my mind will explode and it will drain me of all the ATP-PC stores. I'll finally be able to run marathons.
:F it'll happen eventually heheh
some stills, man nothing special, gym was so packed at 1:30 am.. i got there and literally 100 people probably in the gym.. no joke.. it's hard for me to dunk with THAT many people around, worrying about bball's and i slipped a few times from drops of sweat on the wood court, lame.
how would a session like this on a monday with a workout of heavy lunges on say thursday work? do you think 1 LTMP session a week is enough if you focus on increasing the amount of reps every week? i recover from workouts extremely slow so im trying to plan my training for when AAU season is over now
nah, if you were going to do that, you'd want to just make that a normal session, not ltmp.. ltmp would be used WHENEVER throughout that week, could go VERY light, for example the 60% squatting for reps.. That's extremely light, it shouldn't cause any problems whatsoever with your other training, it should instead aid recovery and get you "more stimmed" for your real sessions.
so you could do a normal volume session on monday, that would make more sense.. 3-5 x 10 and a 20 repper for example (or do without the 20 repper etc).
one of the good things about high frequency training, it will improve your ability to recover from workouts.. if you got in more submax lifting sessions, your work capacity would improve.
peace!
ok thanks for the reply man,
np man

ive been reading through all the different articles on here just trying to prepare myself for once my aau season ends. When it ends im going to have from July-February to train before AAU starts again in March. Thats 8 months of training I think I can make some serious gains during that time.
definitely

Without a doubt I'll be able to throw down with ease off 1 leg with 8 months of nothing but training. Im just looking for some guidance and the articles your write help bro.
well, your case is unique in the sense that your knees can become an issue.. you have to find a way of strengthening your legs which doesn't bother your knees, that could be half squatting and/or lunging etc.. just have to find something that keeps your knees healthy and then go apeshit on it and improve strength like crazy, i imagine deep squatting for you definitely exacerbates the issues..
you could implement LTMP in addition to a program or by itself, the only thing would be to make sure you stay more towards the 60% range initially, first 1-2 weeks, just to make sure the knees aren't getting murdered.. playing bball is more intense than LTMP-lifting, so, but it comes down to finding a lift that doesn't aggravate issues.. you could load up a lift with 30% and if that lift doesn't agree with you biomechanically, it'll cause issues, so the key is to find something that allows you to push the weights without messing with those knees.. for me, that's half.. imagine if i was deep squatting with the type of frequency/volume i use? i'd be a mess, my hip would be destroyed before my knees would be.. staying above parallel keeps me in a much safer position and allows me to do what i do.
i'm starting to use ltmp in and of itself, i've pretty much cut out my normal lifting sessions.. for example, i'm lifting mostly LTMP-VOLUME sessions, but then i am throwing in LTMP-SINGLES sessions and really pushing the intensity on those WHEN I FEEL GOOD.. so i might go 3-4 days in a row with multi-session days using LTMP-VOLUME, then bam mentally i feel ready to hit some major singles, and i'll do so.. by staying in the submax range for the most part, i'm getting stronger without taxing my CNS.. the ltmp-singles sessions really tax my CNS/tendons much harder.. 90+% lifts put alot more pull on the tendons of course, and that's something i avoid with the 60-85% range during the LTMP-VOLUME sessions..
this ltmp framework is becoming a system in and of itself, pretty much guided by feel.. if you feel like hitting a max 20, go for it.. if you feel like hitting a 10, go for it.. very slow 10, very fast 20, then out of nowhere after a good night's rest you feel PR ready and go for some big lifts on LTMP-SINGLES, it's mostly a "by feel" approach but the reason it becomes effective is this:
1. lengthening (stretching) before tension, promotes better length-tension relationships 2. submax work improves recovery and still activates all mu's, while "bathing the muscle+fascia with blood" (recovery) 3. submax high rep work is a prolonged hypoxic environment which is very anabolic, time under tension is very important to strength/hypertrophy 4. submax work doesn't drain the CNS once you're adapted, initially sure because of soreness etc, but once you get past that initial soreness/draining phase, you'll feel fine the next day after hitting any number of sessions with 10-20 reps.. it really is amazing. 5. high frequency routines provide the greatest results, if a stimulus is provided day in and day out, even multiple times per day, the body has no choice but to adapt to survive, given adequate nutrition intake + sleep schedule. 6. improved work capacity, this style of lifting improves work capacity.. for example, if i'm stimulating max motor units 3x/day with half squat, vs 2x/week, i'm squatting 120 times a month vs 8 times a month, huge difference.. that would be over 1 year's worth of lifting done in 1 month, so you can see the potential for gains. 7. ltmp-singles sessions don't even need to be 100% psyche up.. you use all of the volume work to get stronger, then just test your new strength relaxed no psyche up using singles.. no need to push the maxes unless you really want too, the higher frequency submax work will push your maxes.. for nd, if you can squat 305 x 8, and you work around that realm, going 275 x 20, 305 x 10 breathing, 225 x 20 slower, 345 x MSEM singles, within a short while, that 305 will improve with most of the work coming submaximally.. you could in fact stay completely shy of 305 x whatever and work within the 275-295 range for more volume, busting ass on breather's, then go back to 305 and easily PR.
hope that helps.. this system is built more around submax work, but higher frequency.. so, if we really do "check our egos at the door", we can make some pretty impressive gains safely in the submax realm.. really focusing on moderate-high rep efforts @ a higher frequency results in some pretty impressive strength gains..
this approach is really a demonstration of "practice".. if you want a good jumper, got to shoot every day, mixing it up, all types of spots/volumes.. same for learning to recruit your mu's.. to tap into those dormant mu's, multiple times per day, is really effective at spurring on adaptations for using those mu's, making them stronger, etc.
think of recruiting mu's as a skill, this is a system aimed at improving that skill, without causing much CNS fatigue.
hope that helps

I know Ive said it before but youre strength lately is incredible. I imagine reps with weights in the 400s this summer
appreciate it man, hope so, that's the goal, i want 405 x 10 on pin 6 squat by august. :F
my waffles make my heel sink, the forefoot is 'elevated', to keep you on more of your mid/forefoot when sprinting etc.. pC.
Interesting concept.
I like that. Thankyou.
np, yup that's why i love those shoes.. very light, keeps me more on my forefoot/toes, feels like im barefoot, great ankle stability even though the shoes is so minimal (because the sole is so flat etc, and they tighten up good).
officially entering yesterday's journal entry, didn't log to APT yesterday..

CURRENT GOALS 01/11/2011: PROJECT SSR7, get down to 150 or less as soon as possible.. maintain 315 x 5 half squat strength + keep a set of 20 maintained (245-265), fix right ankle, more interval conditioning, don't neglect my necessary exercises

looks way too easy man. 225x50 will be achieved very soon I think. Youre strength lately is crazy. Youre making 225 look like 135 any idea as to when you wanna reach 225x50?
thanks alot man, not sure when 225 x 50 will fall.. i think once i get 315 x 20 then i'll have the capacity for 225 x 50.. even though those reps looked ez, i need them to look even easier.. if i'm not into it mentally i'm screwed, even 135 x 30 is hard as hell when i'm not focused hah..
so no idea, it's been something i've wanted to do for a long time.. 50 is a retarded number, i don't even know why i want to hit 225 x 50, i think it just sounds badass.. but when i can hit 225 x 50, it'll mean my erectors/legs/core/everything will just be so strong/conditioned, so it's something i definitely want to achieve, just to see how my body feels with that kind of strength + conditioning.
nope, might test it tonight but not sure. it will be after dunking so, not sure, i'll prolly work up to a heavy single though after so, if im feeling good ill go for it.
ya it is definitely good for vertical, the legs are a little different than the rest of the body in that there is just so much leg mass that needs to be recruited.. high rep squatting recruits more mu's than < 10 rep squatting, for example, just standing with the bar that long (while squatting) will murder the quads, so as you're fatiguing the hamstrings/glutes/quads while you squat, quads are also being maximally fatigued extra just from being under tension that long (holding at the top to hit the next rep etc).. the feeling after a 10RM and a 20 rep breathing squat is WAAAAAAAAAY different.. 20 rep breathing squat is extreme jello, mostly due to quads being completely fatigued.. so in a 20 rep breather, you get everything maixmally fatigued, hams/glutes/quads, this leads to quicker adaptations for strength/mass/etc. bar speed is good on 20 reppers (and anything from 10-12RM), so that's also a bonus.
so ya regardless, if 20 reppers make you stronger relative to bodyweight, then they improve vert.. they definitely aren't an endurance lift imo, i get stronger very fast when i incorporate 20 reppers.
peace
But wouldn't the high rep squatting have negative effects on the nervous system and also the tendons? Although you are getting a lot stronger, you're nervous system is getting murdered thus leading to over training.
no, why would it have a negative effect on the nervous system if i do multiple 20's per day and then jump higher the next day? etc?
forget everything you've read regarding high rep lifting and the nervous system, it's bullshit.
the only valid issue you brought up is, "overtraining", but i lift 3-4x/day for ~3 weeks now and i'm not overtrained.. the only reason i've even accumulated some fatigue is because of my lack of sleep problem, which isn't related to lifting in the least.
read the LTMP thread, it'll explain why the nervous system isn't an issue.. high rep squatting recruits ALL MOTOR UNITS, those that would lie dormant every day had you not recruited them, without the fatigue of higher intensity lifting, high rep lifting is a submax way to recruit those MU's and cause adaptations for using them/hypertrophying them.
again, is 100m sprinting going to cause negative adaptations for the CNS? it's 3-4 seconds over the ATP-PC energy system limit, and a high level of lactic acid is accumulated.. same goes for 200m or even 400m? as long as you get in maximally explosive work, those distances aren't going to cause any negative effect on the cns, in fact they do the opposite.. if one was going to stay entirely in the explosive realm, they'd have to stay 60m or less (6-7 seconds or less), never accumulating any significant amount of lactic acid during any effort, etc.. that would result in very shitty gains, but that would feed the "explosive theorists" and make them think what they are doing is correct for becoming maximally explosive.. they would also probably avoid heavy lifting since that is "slow" and causes adaptations of the IIa fibers and not the IIx fibers.. you see where i'm going with this.. the science freaks totally fubar their training by overanalyzing.
one of verkhoshansky's MAXIMAL STRENGTH methods, is mutliple sets of 10's.. that method would be an issue if it didn't result in strength/power gains, but it isn't an issue, it's fine for strength, power, and hypertropy/tendon adaptations.
pC
While this is all true, there is a flipside to this quantity over quality approach. If we're talking long term health, I'd say this variant is at a slight disadvantage comparing it to repping 5 times (max) explosively and controlled. I'm pretty sure at the end of your set, since all of your muscles are burned, you'll compensate quite a bit by using the tendons a lot more for stability and will be using muscles you don't want to be using (ie. the lower back) too much.
nah, tendons won't be used for "stability", it's still an effort stabilized by the muscles, and i'm not doing anything torsional so it's not a big strain on the ligaments..
if that were an issue, 400m runners would have major "tendon issues" etc.. fatiguing the muscles has nothing to do with the tendons, once your muscles are dead, you won't be able to do any more reps.. it's not like a "plyo" exercises where you can keep forcing reps after fatigue, that would hit the tendons alot harder because the muscles stay stiff and the tendons act as springs.. not the same with lifting soo..

You can imagine, in the long run, this could cause some damage.
I personally wouldn't suggest Full squatting for max reps because of this reason, as example I'm pretty damn sure an athlete won't be able to make a decent, controlled descent at rep 25, he'll probably just plunge right in there and muscle his way up, using a lot of lower back to make up for the other muscles that have failed him at this point.
well no one is saying to lift with bad form, you go to technical failure, not complete and utter failure..

For limited ROM lifts this technique seems highly beneficial though.
Thoughts?
yup i promote this with half squat, not full squat.. people are fine trying full squat but i'd advise against it and utilize half squatting instead, high frequency heavy deep knee bends increases risk of some joint/meniscus related issues of the knee.
sure there is a risk with any high frequency protocol but going DEEP every session would be alot more fatiguing structurally.
But adarq so far hasn't experienced anythin yet, mayb we'll see how he feels as a gauge teeheehee.
After a higher vol squat day for me ytd, my lower back is reminding me abt it now. And Im on my way to hit the upper body now as I type this out on the train journey there lol.
Dunno abt training effects, but I personally dun really like to do high rep sets.
gotta keep form tight, no reason the low back should ever be getting sore from high rep squatting, mine doesn't.. the only time it gets sore is if i have a bad rep and use too much low back.
do these reps look amazingly easy in terms of bar speed and how i'm just handling the weight? lightest 225 ever felt to me..
adarqui, What is the reason for placing your heels on two plates while you squat?.
my waffles make my heel sink, the forefoot is 'elevated', to keep you on more of your mid/forefoot when sprinting etc.. so, the plates under heels help to give me just a bit more lift in the heel, kind of evens it out.. if i squat without plates, in waffles, my low back gets hammered because of how far i sit back, i hate it.. doesn't feel good at all.. plates under heels allows me to shift to quad easier, btu i still get glute/ham.
