welcome back man, ltns

i disagree here though:

As for myself, yes, I should have spent far less time squatting and far more time doing RDLs, SLDLs, and ab wheel rollouts. Strength-wise, sprinting is all about the glutes, abs, hip flexors, and hamstrings. The quads aren't really all that important, and as such, neither are squats. Unfortunately, hindsight is 20-20. At least I'll be able to use my newer understanding when I do hit the track again though.

i see that you might get back into the short sprints, 30-60m.. nice.

Quads play a very active role in early accell, especially < 20m, do you not agree? Also, as for squat, it definitely can target the glutes very well, but in my opinion, that's not as important as just overall nervous system arousal and recruitment of large amounts of muscle mass. The three exercises you mentioned, which are very important for the muscles involved in sprinting, do not address the CNS to the extent heavy squatting would. Beyond squat being so important for quad development, it is also incredibly important for CNS development. RDL/SLDL/ab wheel rollouts cannot address neural drive like some heavy squat singles for example.

IMO, deadlift or squat has to be in any sprint/jump programming, how you incorporate it can vary, but in order to break those CNS-barriers and tap into protected motor potential, people are going to need to phase in some intense squatting or deadlifting.

as for your own training, if you do decide to get into the short sprints again, i'd really up the frequency of your sprint work. Every day some kind of sprint work, nearly always incorporating some kind of max effort work (or close to it), even if it's just max effort 10's etc.. Has to be fun though :F I love jumping, taking a rest day is so damn hard for me now, I want to dunk every day... i'm forcing myself to take rest days, but for example, I dunked every single day of May, max effort jumps, from full runup or short runups if i felt stale.. hah.. i'd approach sprinting the same way honestly.. hamstrings/hip flexors/cns can get really beat down with sprints greater than 40m, but I could do max effort 10's/20's every single day, makes me feel great too and still provides that needed stimulus.

unbelievable mix, best mix i have seen in a long while.

same, myree is so impressive.. he has so much style in the air, plus his hops are elite level, then he crushes them rim with full aggression.. it's disgusting.

maxing every day is fine imo, but, you have to define "maxing".. true maxes, psyched up? nope.. our maxes fluctuate slightly, every day, even varying depending on the time of day etc. As long as you "stay relaxed" & workup to training maxes, not "competition level maxes" (psyche ups/grinders etC), then it's fine imo. So the max lifts need to be done in a "relaxed environment", with emphasis on decent rep speed to avoid grinding the reps which causes too much cns fatigue.

how long a block you do, maxing every day, is the question.. I was able to go 2 months pretty consistent, either working up to a max single or hitting heavy rep work (5-20 reps), each day.. after 2 months though, I was pretty fried.. i'm starting to rebound out pretty well from april/may and half of june, which were highly concentrated.

oh sh*t RJ posted WTF.

I wonder how many of you are able to do it:

I used to do it easily when I was a kid (~10 years old) but right now I'm sooo far away from doing it.

i've never been able to do that, not even as a kid.. bad flexibility/mobility from the getgo.

Andrew, I was going to start a new thread on this but I'm not sure it would develop any discussion, anyway...

I was just wandering, if all the resistance from your squatting came entirely from resistance bands (elastic energy), (no weight plates), could you see any potential gains from just using bands alone?.

if bands alone created significant tension at the bottom, then ya, you could expect significant gains.. if it doesn't, and becomes way more intense at the top, then you can only expect small gains.. for example, a light barbell loaded with short but resistive bands creating considerable tension at the bottom and as you go up, ya, that would cause gains.

Some of the pages on this site that are playin' up resistance bands for vert & speed have got me wandering : http://www.athleticquickness.com/page.asp?page_id=38

Does training with resistance bands make your muscles more elastic as the bands are more elastic in nature?. Elasticity being qualities that apply to vert & speed.

nope.. your muscles become more "elastic" doing activities such as reactive work/plyos/sprinting etc.. if resistance is large, it's always going to cause most of your adaptations to occur in the strength/hypertrophy realm instead of tendon/contract-relax realm.

the nature of the bands doesn't change much about how your muscles adapt, it's still just overcoming a slow intense stimulus, the only thing that becomes interesting is how your body reacts to the "change in gravity" feeling caused by the bands accelerating you downwards faster than gravity.. slow intense movements are going to target hypertrophy/raw strength the most, elastic qualities respond better to dynamic/ballistic work... bottom line, people need to do both, strength + sprint/jump/reactive.

bw = 153
soreness = hamstrings/adductors
aches/injuries = none, (mid back area tight from some stretching i did 2 weeks ago, have had it since then just dont log it)
diet = cold shower + protei/water, 6 eggs + jalapeno, dog park, workout{free-half-squat=225x25, NGP=10}, lots of PB, chipotle double chicken burrito + chips and salsa, to
ns of PB, 4 eggs + egg whites + honey... still putting salt in my crystal light's..

felt good today, pretty sore though during squatting.

Been working my way up too that 100kg mark for a VERY VERY long time now and finally hit it!

Squat:
1 @ 100kg
 :personal-record: :personal-record: :personal-record: YAY!!! Finally got that 100kg regular squat! I know its stuff all compared to most but it's such a milestone for me. Man, so excited I got it! Was a huuuuuge grind though, almost died. My mind was trying to psych me out when I unracked it, so I just stood there for ages with it on my back until I knew I wasn't going to pussy out lol, was shaking like shit on my way up and re-racking it, all good though  :D  That was 1.45x bodyweight, so close to 1.5x!!!

HUGE props man. Congrats.
