Article & Video Discussion / Re: valsalva maneuver

well i've seen videos on youtube. They sure do help my grip, but i mean, sometimes, my hadns are real sweaty, and i accidentally loosen my grip, which causes the straps wrapped aroudn the dumbbel to be looser. Yesterday i  did one set, as my ankle hurted. My grip was a lil tired only. I normally do two sets, after that it'll be quite tired, but not s exhausting.

I normally do my right leg, followed by a minute rest for my forearms to recover, then do my left, and so on.

and this is how i wear the lifting straps on.:

jump to about 50secodns of the video.

o right my bad.

bu twhy i pant after set of lunges, is because i'm already using lots of energy by just gripping the dumbbell and making sure my form is proper. i e ven use wrist straps, but as i progressed in the weight, it gets harder.

of course my grip strength is limited and weak, but i cant just sit around waiting until my foprearms grow bigger then only progress in weights. i mean, wouldnt that spoil the point of , doing lunges which is suppose to train your legs?

i was thinking, since i use 47.5lbs dbells for 12 reps of lunges, if i would to hvea low volume day for lunges, but 47.5lbs dbbells is my grip strength limit with wrist straps( i could do 50 but i'm sure i can lift much more than 100lbs for 5-8 reps), so should i use baqrbell for those?

andrew said to use db, but i'm not sure when can i move on to barbell.

thx

oh right so small breaths when using valsalva methods, and use it for 5rm and below lifts, right?

and if lifts mroe tha n5rm, then jsut breathe normall?

FWIW, I use valsalva maneuver for at least part of the ROM for all compound lifts I do -- squat, DL, bench, OHP -- regardless of rep range, including warm ups. It helps so much with maintaining a solid core, which might not be a huge issue on the first rep of a set of 8 but can be a big one on the last couple of reps. Practicing it has allowed me to do it more easily and with less blood pressure issues when I do end up going heavy.

ic , so do i use valsalva on sets of 12 of lunges too?

ADARQ & LanceSTS - Q&A / placement of bar on squats

Hey, i've posted on the article video discussion page about placement of barbell during squats, and havent got a reply there, so was thinking of asking you guys. anyways, i'll copy and paste it.

Hey , as the title says, i have come across this article :
http://doubleyourgains.com/getting-the-bar-position-and-your-hands-right-with-back-squats

Well, I certainly have problem squating, i think i'm doing a high bar squats. Thats because i dont have much muscle on my upper back.

Just imagine a shrot skinny guy with little muscle. the only muscle i can see my self have is a little of this muscle( i guess everyone who never workout has this too when they shrug their shoudlers back)

So basically, is the article correct? cause It sounds good to me, especially the one part where they say size has a lot to do with it.

So if i have little muscle on my upper back, am i suppose to squat high bar?

I'll try to get a photo or vid of my current squat form and where i put the barbell on.

Anyways, my main question, does the bar bell rest on  this muscle( http://www.exrx.net/Muscles/TrapeziusLower.html) during lwo bar squats, or this muscle( http://www.exrx.net/Muscles/TrapeziusMiddle.html).

EDIT: oh yh , i place the bar on my middle fibers, somewhree there, where the bar is liek roughyl on top of the posterior deltoid
. thats high bar if im not wrong? If i tried lwoering the bar summore ,it is kidna uncomfortable and feels liek the bar is gonan drop off my back.

i place the bar like the dude in this pic:

thats all

right i didnt ice my legs. simply busy and lazy.

But good thign is, its not so bad. the only time i felt pain during my workotu was lunges, when my working leg was my left . So after one set, i stopped completely and continued the rest of the workout.

And yeah true true. Ima try 'meditating' later:)

thx for your help man

Well, it's really all about how you feel.  IMO, if it doesn't hurt, DO IT!  I would just say ease into it.  Your ankle will be considerably weaker for the next little while, so any like wiggle will probably cause you to make it worse.  I would really be careful on the jumps, and the reverse lunges because if you come down at any type of angle, you can consider that thing rolled.  As long as your carefull, and you don't try to push it too hard, you might be ok.

Just keep icing for a few days.  I would say at least continue until the day after it stops hurting.  Icing is really important to healing tissue.

Ic well thx alot man and do i ice before or after workout?
This is gonna sound hippie, but I've been influenced about a lot of paranormal stuff. I'd do the regular massage as has been recommended, but seriously meditate, and do not get "angry" at your ankle. Your body hears this information according to psychics. I know this is weird.

Also meditation taps into the electrical bone healing properties of the body. Read "The Body Electric." Yogis and energetic healers who can heal fractures instantly all tap into this ability that many lower creatures with less nerve tissue, who have better bone regenerative ability, inherently have.

Yeah my frens todl me about te massage thing to, said it worked for them. But anyways, how meditate on your ankles?

thx

nice thx alot. Ima elevated my ankles, as well as my elbow(long time injury).
And since i gotta avoid exercises which has less stress on the outside portion of the ankle, would practicing standing jumps be fine?

anyways, just went to the doctor. she said its just minor(thank god!).

Well, I do warm up sets of squats, and then i begin my real workout. I do leg presses, reverse lunges,45degree  back extension and standing calf raises(like usual).

thx for reply

Hey, earlier today while palying basketball, i went for the rebound which flew outside the court(a small basketball court), and as i jumped and grab it, my right foot landed on a big stone and it went towards the inside.

I could walk after that, but the bone on the external side of my ankle has a little swollen feeling. if i point my toes as high as i cna, i'l lfeel the swell. other that that, only pointing the sides of my feet upwards will be pain . If i lift my heel up, no pain at all.

I'm just scared that it will swell up alot tomorow which will prevent me from going to the gym. I iced it like 5minutes after i injured it.

Any thing i can do for it to heal the fastest?

and if it still swells, can i still go gym and work my legs tomorrow?

thx

Hey, andrew mentioned somethign about valsalva maneuver. I've checked it out, but there is this site which kinda scares me about the effects of using valsalva maneuver. check out the second post of the forum topic:

http://www.exrx.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=25626&sid=a172f0c893a4c1302dbf43cba1b14b73

Well, It seems by using this valsalva maneuver can cause reduced blood flow to
the heart and insufficient oxygen supply to the brain, which could cause dizziness and
temporary loss of consciousness.

Now, If i pant hard after certain exercises by using this method, does that means i should just use a normal breathing? Example, lunges. What I meant by normal breathing here is when i go down on lunges, i inhale, as i go up , i exhale.

I knwo its better to use valsalva maneuver for squats , But how about other exercises like lugnes and 45degree back extension?

So any thoguths on this method? should i use it , or use it on certain exercise?

thx and chao
