I think there are multiple factors involved here that all add up incrementally.
One- the mat test can be "cheated" landing slightly bent kneed as noted here already. Say it only adds 1" to their SVJ...
Two- jumping off turf is tougher in my experience. So say their RVJ is an inch low.
That's a 2" swing just at a glance. So know you're closer to a 6" variation between RVJ and SVJ. More "acceptable".
I've also noticed that, while both are obviously helped by repetitions, the SVJ is more strength dependant whereas a RVJ has a myriad of factors. Strength, speed, form/technique. It seems more genetically predispositioned. Especially since I'm seeing guys who have massive RVJ start strength training and while their SVJ skyrockets they only add a few inches to their RVJ (talking elite jumpers here). Just my observations and experience but it seems like they're closer to their genetic limit on RVJ than they were in SVJ because that's what they did a lot of.
