  If anyone truly knows this "religion" they would know that the God revealed in Scriptures does not hate any single act of disobedience more than another.  All acts of disobedience or sin is simply a symptom of how badly humanity has deviated from it's original "image".  That image isn't just the physical.  We are obviously not just physical, and we obviously don't act on just instinct.  We have a mind and emotions and endless other characteristics.

Let me ask you something, isn't atheism simply another religion?  It is the belief or faith that there is nothing else out there.  In the end, everything revolves around belief or faith.

Two standard definitions of religion:

Notice the word "superhuman" or "controlling power" etc? That should answer your question.

Believe != Religion



Atheists may seem "like religious people" when they team up to fight the forces of evil, but they don't have any beliefs in controlling powers, spirits, god's, or anything of that nature... Atheists believe in science/physics as the explanation of the natural world.




As for the faith comment, again, you're "wrong".. Atheists wouldn't have faith in the religious sense, here's a list of 4 definitions:

a (1) : belief and trust in and loyalty to God (2) : belief in the traditional doctrines of a religion
b (1) : firm belief in something for which there is no proof (2) : complete trust
3: something that is believed especially with strong conviction; especially : a system of religious beliefs <the Protestant faith>

Obviously atheists don't believe in something for which there is no proof... Atheists support science.. In order to "prove something scientifically", you need proof, obviously.. For example, you can't "prove god" so it would never be accepted scientifically until god himself comes down and tells us his cool story.

You can make the case for "strong conviction", atheists have strong convictions usually, about their beliefs in science/evolution rather than fairy tales/creation.



But ya, everything does NOT boil down to belief and "faith".. From an atheists perspective, everything boils down to facts.

Facts lead to progress. "Beliefs and faith" havn't created anything that has benefited the human race, not that I know of at least.

You put "faith" in all of these fairy tale stories written by deceitful "humans" who are obviously extremely "fallible" in a religious sense. You have no facts. The only facts that actually exist are:

1) Jesus seemed to have existed
2) He died
3) A book was written in his honor
4) Millions of people were mislead

That's it, nothing more.


So you put "faith" into those prophets etc, of whom you have never met & been unable to actually witness speak, teaching, etc.. How do you know they are not corrupt like the hundreds of other child molesting sexual predators priests & bishops who use "religion" to gain access to children?

I predicted this is going to be an endless debate, and it is starting to look that way.

Regarding what they predicted-- they predicted that there will be a messiah that will save "God's people" from their misery.  At first, it was thought that God's people are the Jews, but it was after the messiah came, died, and resurrected did we finally realize that God's people isn't necessarily the Jews, but all those that simply believe.  So the "breakthrough" already happened in the "religious" community 2000 years ago, and is the only breakthrough that needs to happen. 

Why do god's people need saving if:

1) Every single one of us was apparently created in the image of god
2) God could easily save people from their misery, he's god
3) Why doesn't god just come out and say "hey folks, you've got it wrong, just saying, it's X not Y, i'm god btw, since you can all hear me i'm talking directly into your brain from the kingdom of heaven network operations center
3b) Or he could just appear and tell us, would be so sick

Ok so, that's the only breakthrough that needs to occur. That we understand the people that "believe" are god's people. The disbelievers are to be sent to the firey depths of hell, to burn in the eternal hellfire.

Also, I find it funny that you call it a "trap". Science does just fine without religion. Religion only gets in the way of science, for example, with stem cell research and the ability to grow organs from stem tissue. There would be far more progress in curing types of paralysis & various diseases had a bunch of politicians with extreme religious views not struck down the ability for American scientists to experiment with stem cell tissues ~6-8 years ago. It's different now, but, that's years lost in the battle to find cures for cancer & alzheimers (sp?) disease.

Regarding the messiah (Jesus)-- over 500 people witnessed his resurrection, mostly poor fisherman, farmers and grazers.  Non of which had the incentive to conspire to such an outrageous claim and then get tortured by the Romans for their outrageous claims.  They were offered prizes and titles of authority by the Romans in exchange for them to simply stop, but they didn't.  Many were thrown into the Colosseum or killed some other way (especially by Emperor Nero).  Why would they do this?  Because when they witnessed Jesus' resurrection, they realized death in this life isn't even close to the end. 

500 people witnessed his resurrection, but again, why do you care?

Some guy was born to a virgin (LOL), turned fish into loaves of bread (LOL), died brutally, was then resurrected (LOL), then disappeared and is now in charge of judging people and listening in on their thoughts + pulling strings on a daily basis.

You keep mentioning "no" incentive. Obviously there is incentive. Incentive to unite groups of people to protect themselves against another group of people (romans, persians, etc). You can't be that naive.

So if jesus, god, or god's son, i have no idea at this point, is so almighty and such, then why am I having this discussion with you about the most simple issues which prevent many people from believing this story? None of this proves anything you are saying. For example, let's say you actually think the earth is 6500 years old and such. There are mountains of evidence which disprove you. Let's say you claim that evolution is garbage, well, there's enormous amounts of evidence that say you are completely incorrect in your thinking. Let's say you claim someone was "resurrected", well, the only people we've ever actually witnessed being resurrected is due to "science" and the ability to necessitate people using various methods: organ transplants, shock panels, cpr, temporary cryogenic stuff, etc.

Science is much more impressive than fairy tales.. This whole god/bible fairy tale is weak compared to black holes, dinosaurs, universe ever expanding, physics, einstein, organ transplants, stem cell research, gene doping, artificial insemination, gender transformation, the human genome project, evolution, bozon particles, quantum physics, particle accelerators, nuclear/atom bombs, robots, etc...

Turning fish into loaves of bread, walking on water, thousands of failed "predictions", and being born to a virgin fairy tales don't even come close in comparison to the daily breakthroughs in science.

I found out today that I need a heart transplant. This is very unfortunate news because I'm going to have to rely on some silly doctor who believes in science to take the heart out of a recently dead person and put that organ inside of my body. What the heck? I told my pastor that I would rather just pray about it and he was adamant that I go see a doctor. Regardless, I'm asking for him to pray for me because obviously he can talk directly to god, and as long as his message actually reaches god, then I won't need a heart transplant. So i'm hoping the message reaches god before I have to rely on some silly doctor who does this for a living, prolonging life through advances in science.

So anyway I heard that there's this big hurricane and it's going to hit New York. Well obviously it's going to hit New York because they are sinners that's why the Yankees didn't make the World Series this year. Let's all pray for them.

Whatever dude, I used to think exactly like you.  Until you realized it isn't what it is.  When you end up in life where there is virtually nothing left that will bring you joy, when you've been through it all, then one will search harder.  That's all I can say besides turning this into an endless debate.

There's nothing to search for. There's no "meaning to life". Meaning is what we give to life. Give your life meaning, but don't expect life to actually mean anything. I know it's hard to come to grips with, but sometimes the truth hurts. We are simply organisms which share the same biological components as every other animal on this planet  Our DNA is very similar to every animal on this planet, and in the case of apes/chimps, it's remarkably similar (96% in some studies). We are carbon based life forms. We eat or we can be eaten. We live, then we die: the same as every other organism on this planet.

Anyway, hyperdunk, I'd just like your thoughts on this: Ok so you once thought like me, but you did a "search" of some sort, soul searching/contemplating a creator/reading the bible etc I imagine.. My question is this: If a prophet from 2000+ years ago was still alive today, and he was able to lecture you on his writings, give you first hand accounts of his dealings with god/jesus, what would you think when he tells you the earth is flat (which he obviously would because that's what they believed)? Would it make you think he is an idiot, would you be indifferent, or would you believe him? What would you think of this and why?
