So crossroads ... embrace non-existing squat and go all in on athletic stuff like bball/sprinting/dunking ... or take a step back and try to get my squat going? Which way do I go? I just wanna get to repping 140kg and put it on maintenance .. not asking for too much am i? I mean i am, that's adding 20kg to my squat while not gaining any weight .. but maybe i could work harder/smarter/etc...

Keep up the bball/sprinting/dunking because that's the stuff you want to be good at. Squatting is just a means to an end. When I ran my fastest I didn't even squat or lift I was just really light and used to play sports a lot. Sport-specific is what makes you good at the sport. Getting into the mindset of thinking about your squat is making you sound like a powerlifter and honestly the biggest advantage of the squat is really the standing vertical jump.

Bodyweight- 86.5

Jump Rope-
1000 skips

Squats-
60x8
82.5x7x2
I had to stop after the 2nd set of 82.5 because I was experiencing sharp pain in my right hamstring/right glute. I'm not sure if it was DOMS or a small tear. I can't catch a break atm.

That dunk looked so easy.

that sucks.. you were doing so great. I hope you get back on the "gainstrain" as soon as possible. I'm in a very similar situation. Training has been going really well... boom hurt my wrist skateboarding and now it feels like I have to revaluate this whole situation and adjust my training accordingly which is just annoying as hell. I hate injuries!!  :raging:

That sucks about your wrist. My lat feels better now, but unfortunately I'm still sick so I haven't been able to train. I've just been focusing on my calorie intake and trying to lose weight/body fat.

I can't wait to get lean again. It's easier to stay lean once you're already lean so that's what I'm trying to do atm since diet is 75% of the equation of having low body fat.

Nothing to update except that I'm now sick with a fairly bad cold. I fkn hate winter. My body doesn't tolerate the cold temperatures very well.

1401
BW: 79.1kg (+0.3kg .. da fuk)

But i look "leaner" for whatever that's worth. Anyway i've decided 77kg or bust and then maintain that while recomping .. with or without creatine .. that's my "Athletic" bodyweight, no more, no less. But that's a strong 77kg .. not a dieted down one. Which means i wanna be carbed up, creatined up, PR'ing up at that bodyweight.

So another 10 days more of cutting starting today but will be adding eggs and toast to meal #1 on sunday onwards. Lets go. bball tonight. Feeling pretty refresh. shud be able to dunk.

Could be water retention?

da hell you gonna be all skinny and sexy when you were single, but not look your best for your man?!

This^^^

Women are just idiots. Proven to me again and again and again and.... you get the idea... waaaaaaaaaay too many times.

Prisons are full of males.  Wars are started by males.  If Donald Trump becomes the next president of the US it will be because of the male vote and not the female vote.  Women do better with less opportunity and face a hostile work environment and discrimination in what was a male dominated workforce...

And since the topic is about being overweight... Men in America on average have a bmi of almost 30 and bodyfat above 20%...  They are on average fatter than women despite far less predisposition to store fat, and no biological excuse to need to gain weight (childbirth)...

Id say the evidence is pretty strong that the average guy is far stupider than the average women...  If women are idiots.... I don't know what the hell men are!

Where are you getting your sources about the average man in America having a BMI of approximately 30 and being 20%+ bodyfat?

For the average sedentary male if they have a BMI of 30 they are going to be a lot closer to 30%+ bodyfat then they are to 20%.

Edit-I found a source comparing the average Australian man to the average American man.
http://www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/fashion/this-is-what-mr-average-australia-looks-like-20141028-11cyp9.html

"Rather, he stands at 175.6 centimetres tall and weighs in at 85.9 kilograms. This gives Jack a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 27 putting him squarely in the middle of the overweight category and a few kgs shy of the medically defined obesity range.
Jack is shorter, but slightly leaner than Todd though - the average American man, whose BMI is 29, one below obese and who is 176.4".

Track & Field / Re: olympic trials
« on: July 06, 2016, 08:58:50 am »
Very interesting to see different countries criteria and the national trials, the UK trials were OK but they seem to struggle, but the US trials was on another level, they really are passionate about their athletes and push for them unlike in the UK. The criteria to qualify in USA was sub 10 seconds? correct me if im wrong. Justin gatlin won a good time. Jamaica trials was intense also, unfortunately for bolt's injury he couldn't compete, but yohan blake is not at the level to threaten bolt but gatlin definitely is getting back to his old self.

i've only seen the US trials but ya they are intense. Gatlin basically owns the "old farts sprinting thread". Man he's flying. Crazy to think he won gold in 2004 and is about to challenge everyone again in 2016. For a young guy, Bromell is impressive too.

I really hope Bolt is healthy come August.

Kim Collins is injured now and probably wouldn't have got to go to the Olympics due to political reasons, but he ran a PB of 9.93 at 40 years of age, which is just mindblowing.

http://www.athleticsweekly.com/featured/kim-collins-smashes-masters-wr-with-9-93-100m-global-update-43785/

"Kim Collins runs 9.93 PB and masters WR

Ageless wonder Kim Collins ran a PB and St. Kitts and Nevis record of 9.93 (+1.9) at a meeting in Bottrop, Germany, to become the first 40-year-old to go sub-10 seconds for 100m.

The 2003 world champion, who ran his previous PB of 9.96 in London aged 38, beat USA’s Joe Morris with a 10.15 PB and Britain’s Adam Gemili with a 10.19 season opener".

the one-step PR is at 0:21. dunk attempts start at 2:00. huge thanks to acole for the patience -- great training with you today man!

edited it wrong, cut out a couple of decent attempts and included a couple of bad ones. oh well, can't be bothered to re-edit it. the dodgeball one i did just out of frustration.

Looks like you guys had fun.

If the timing was better on a couple of those lobs you would've got dunks. Just unlucky since you were getting enough height.

Bodyweight- 87.4

I've been resting for 5 days. The weather has been terrible. We just had the wettest July day in my city since 1941. My lats not fully recovered yet, but I would be fine to do squats and running. I'll rest 2 more days and then just get back into training again. I agreed to go to a family friends yoga class this Thursday night so that should be interesting since I've never done it before. Can't say I'm looking forward to it though, but I could really benefit from some extra flexibility, particularly in my legs/hamstrings so I'm giving it a shot.

Basketball / Re: NBA Trade Talk
« on: July 04, 2016, 10:05:13 pm »
What bothers me is the tons of people that criticize Durant. "He chose the easy path" and so on. Fuck off. He was presented with an opportunity and he took that opportunity. That's it. He would've been an idiot to ignore it.

"Honor" and stuff like that are just words for fools. In life, you take the best opportunities and you roll with them. It's better to be sorry for what you did than be sorry for what you didn't, or the opportunity that you didn't take.

This is just business, and he's maximizing his chances of winning. Simple.

True. Durant could have a couple of serious knee injuries and never be able to play again. Are the Thunder going to look after him? In this era of professionalism and free agency the days of loyalty are dead.

That stadium looks heaps cool and the gym equipment looked impressive as well.

Was that the USC football team training on the field when you guys were doing the 400m?

Yeah that's the USC summer practice.  They are resurfacing their practice field so now they on the track which is annoying...  But you gotta share equipment on some level...

SC has decent equipment, but usually train people their just cause it's convenient to have a track, turf, gym and bball court all within a minute walk.  Acoles was shocked that our bball gym has 3 full courts and they were all empty lol.

Looks world class compared to what I have in my city. We have 1 track for a city of 1.2 million people. All the other 'tracks' are grass tracks and there's not even that many of them around. In terms of stadiums that have 3 basketball courts we have 4 of them, but they are all geographically spread apart. To have all of those facilities in one location would be a dream.

Acole is from Melbourne so they have better facilities, but I can see why he would be shocked.

Interesting... We do have it good here and I have to remind myself to be appreciative of it... Our biggest advantage is year round good weather - almost never rainy and almost always in the 70s... I am always reminded of this when I go to the east coast to travel in the winter and I want to train... In a city where I have no connections and it's cold and rainy it just seems hopeless - the cool thing about LA is even if you have no money or means you can stumble upon a decent track not too far... Even if that's not possible you can always go run hills outdoors...

As far as Australia... How big is fitness there?  Sounds like a business opportunity if your city is as underserved as you make it sound... In NYC there are tons of people and terrible weather and they have what is probably the best gym I have seen for the public... It's not cheap by any means but if you can put up a couple hundred a month you literally have it all... Weights, 400m track, 200m banked track, basketball courts, sand volleyball, soccer fields, everything all under one roof:

https://www.chelseapiers.com/

I don't know why more such facilities don't exist in populated cities...

Fitness is becoming fairly popular in Australia. We already have heaps of  gyms, but they are mainly the Planet Fitness type. In the last 5 years the trend has been for more 24/7 gyms and Crossfit has been gaining some traction as well. There are some niche powerlifting type gyms as well. My gym that I joined costs $12.95 a week and has all the basic equipment that I need. There's no chains, bands, bumper plates or anything, but for the price it's good value.

Climate wise it's a Mediterranean climate- hot and dry in the summer and cold and wet in the winter. So realistically you'd only need an indoor track for about 5 months of the year tops. The real problem is there just isn't the demand for track in Australia. It's not like the US where track is a sport that gets played at school regularly. Schools only have 'athletics day' and you have a couple of meets throughout the year where the fastest kids in one school will race against the fastest kids in other schools in the area. Then the fastest in the area run against the others that win in their areas for state day and if you're lucky enough to be the fastest in the state you get to travel interstate and run nationals.

People would love to have basketball courts though, but I'm not sure how much people would be willing to pay in extra gym memerships just to have an indoor court. My guess in the current economic climate in my state- not much.

*Sorry for the journal hijack acole.

Man that video is depressing... PH had so much potential... But hasn't been able to get along with his teammates well enough to do well in the NFL.  Could be such a true offensive weapon, return game, receiver, running the reverse, split end, just everything...  I always feel like the guys with the burst speed who look semi-fast but don't have the top-speed track gait always make the best football players...  It's like if you can run fast without knowing how to run and without having learned to maximize stride length... Then you just can't be tackled and you can adjust so many more times...

Definitely. Even the guys who look semi-fast in the NFL are absolutely flying and probably running high 10s at worst. A player with explosiveness, agility, and lateral speed will always be better than a player with good acceleration and great top speed.

Eh... I've trained a few of them and I wouldn't bet on high tens for a lot of them... Low elevens yes.  There is a big difference between could run 10.xx with training and would run 10.xx right now...

If I had to bet I would say a lot of the younger guys would be 10.5-10.9.  But you would be surprised by how much specificity sets in after a few years... The vets that have been in the league for 5+ years... Bet their 100m times would be surprisingly slow which is really a good thing as they move away from the silly 40yd dash and static starts... It's almost like your specific speed becomes so amazing that you lose every other capability...

I bet if you did a vet combine every test would be won by guys on the practice squad!

Chris Johnson raced against Walter Dix in high school and ran mid 10's. I think his PR was 10.38.
http://fl.milesplit.com/meets/5423/results/14902/raw#.V3pBJrh97IU
I guess it's the guys like Jeff Dems and Jacoby Ford who run flat 10s that gives the impression that most other football players must all be around mid 10s. The wide receivers and corner backs would be the fastest.

I could see the running backs being low 11s as most of them weigh around 225lbs+. Even with no body fat when you're that size it's harder to run fast when it comes to top speed.

Not much to update. Haven't been to the gym or done any exercise since Thursday (it's Monday morning now). My right lat is feeling better but not completely healed yet, but the ROM is coming back.

I worked at the election on Saturday from 7am-midnight. I was sitting down from 8am-1pm and didn't move out of the chair the whole time. My hips and groins were feeling sore just from sitting down that long and all tight. My hamstrings also felt 'squashed'. My job was to tick people's names off the electoral roll, which is a massive phone book style book. I also had to hand out all the voting forms so I was constantly leaning into the table all day. From 1:30 to 6pm I was standing up, which was a lot better but I still felt stiff.

The weather has been terrible. It's been raining everyday for the past week and because it's winter the sun is hardly ever out. 7am it's still dark and by 6pm it's dark again. I just need to get motivation to wake up earlier and go running before work!
