Article & Video Discussion / Re: short versus tall athletes
« on: February 01, 2011, 04:54:09 am »
Well I have that sitting height to standing height ratio of under 50, 49.7 (long legs), and I gain what, 2 inches off a run? Sure, I'm not jump efficient off two feet but still, you'd expect better. I also find it much easier to jump off a standing vert or off one step than the "average" basketball player at my height.

That's probably because the average basketball player your height doesn't even eat properly nervmind done any kind of lower body strength work. Most pro basketball players can't jump for shit standing, nevermind recreational and amateur.

Don't forget about valgus angle, hip width and foot angle too. From what I understand a higher valgus angle, narrower hips and more forward facing feet which indicate less externally rotated hips indicate better structure for sprinting/jumping while less valgus angle, wider hips and more outward facing feet indicating externally rotated femurs indicate better structure for squatting.

you guys gotta think tho, idt he cares if his form is that of an olympic lifters, just good enough so he has less of a chance of getting injured than that black football player kid, and that he is using good enough form to get something out of the movement.  Most of the strongmans form is like kevin nees, like derek poundstone, since you wont have amazingly perfect form on the axel press or log press

Pretty much. Although I think Mischa has the market covered when it comes to oly lifting in strongman.

Nutrition & Supplementation / Re: Soy Milk!!!
« on: January 27, 2011, 03:46:33 pm »
Thanks for your reply! But is soy milk a good substitute for milk for a post work-out drink?

no. it makes you into a pussy

correct. also soy doesn't have as-high-quality protein as milk.

Well, maybe. However, it's looking increasingly like the concentrations of isoflavones just isn't high enough in soy to make a measurable, never mind statistically significant difference in hormone levels. You can demonstrate it in rats by feeding them insane amounts of isolated isoflavones though.

Lifted from wikipedia
Quote
A 2010 meta analysis of 15 placebo controlled studies showed that neither soy foods nor isoflavone supplements alter measures of bioavailable testosterone concentrations in men [22] Furthermore, Isoflavones supplementation has no effect on sperm concentration, count or motility, and show no changes in testicular or ejaculate volume.[23][24]

Also an article by JB for Tnation that covered some of the studies comparing soy supplemtation with whey and casein in elite olympic athletes:

I've actually wanted to ask Sean about this.

That's not a power clean, it's what I believe Tony Gentilcore once called an explosive reverse curl.

Still, he's strong as fuck.

Nah his pull is ok. Not a reverse curl. His catch is crap though.

I just know that if you are hangcleaning that much, You are not a Normal athlete.

There's zero drug testing in Worlds Strongest Man which might have something to do with it. Also WPO pro powerlifting doesn't have any drug testing while the amateur division does. Weightliftings not clean but the worlds top weightlifters can even begin to approach the level of drug use present in WSM and untested powerlifting.

The best time for a high carbohydrate meal is in the morning, when your body is prepared to uptake glycogen for energy for the dayhttp://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/post_workout_carbs.htm

now im assuming he is up and ready for the day in the morning and not just wake up and lay around in bed all day

A website full of people with body dysmorphia disorder generally isn't a good place to go for nutrition advice. Also your making generalizations and just generally don't know what your talking about.

ok so bodybuilders, nutritionists, and figure models are completely wrong about nutrition since their nutrition blows, and all of that info wasnt just on bodybuilding.com, it was on 4 or so more sites you can look on google and find it, where everyone is saying the same thing these days, and yes I have been talking to a nutritionist who is very well known so suck my ass

Besides i like how you just tried to be a internet gangster and didnt give any proof or anything trying to disprove me.

Now its what people are saying these days, will it change in the future? its very likely since awhile back Fat was the enemy.

so since "I dont know anything" means your disagreeing with me right? soo do you eat all of your carbs before bed time?

how am i generalizing? just because im stating what a ton of people are saying?

Sean is doing his PhD in Human Nutrition? at University of East Anglia....

Hang on. You have existing knee pain and want to try MSEM squatting? Are you high?

Predicting lifts generally isn't as simple as plugging numbers into a calculator. It depends on which kind of fibers make up your muscle. Things can be more complicated for compound lifts like the squat aswell.

Brzycki's table is bang on for me at 1RM, 5RM and 10RM. I suck at 2-4RM though. It's more of a mental thing. Unless you're a guy with awesome strength endurance, Brzycki should be pretty close. The biggest thing is that you have decent form and no weakness or imbalances that cause sudden sticking points to appear.

Not for the faint-hearted:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTIYGmavT0A" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTIYGmavT0A</a>

Ouch! There's always someone who gets a little bit too desperate to make a snatch and tries to keep the bar up even as it's falling behind you.

And I still don't really buy into the capitalist marketing nutrition thing. I ate much better and my bodyweight is the same, bodyfat is the same and so on.

If you ate the same amount of calories with similar source ratios then this shouldn't be a surprise. It doesn't mean you're cleaner diet wasn't better.

When I cut weight I roughly halve my intake of pure carb sources and slightly increase my protein supplementation. I'm actually cutting at the moment and I'm down 2.2kg over the last two weeks while equaling PRs in my lifts.

It shouldn't need drastic changes to your diet or training to drop a little bodyfat.

I could ramble off my opinions about these things message board style and it'd be all good. I don't want to do that though for 2 reasons. The first is that people on this board are for the most part actually pretty intelligent and can probably understand scientific literature more or less by themselves if some term heavy parts were explained. The 2nd reason is giving you that style of answer doesn't really help me develop my skills in critically analyzing the information available and doesn't help me develop my writing skills. What i'm going to do instead is research the topics properly, and write a miniature review on the topic - references included and 100% bro-science free. You're going to have to wait for the response though! How does that sound?

Sounds damn good dude.

ya it wouldn't be too hard, would definitely take some time though, and i'm pretty burnt from programming all those years i just have this mental block with it now... so kinda hard for me to get anything done.

pc

I can help out too. Maybe we should start something open source and DB based. I'd be really keen on that. Would be great to be able to enter workouts, sleep, soreness/fatigue ratings and meals, bodyweight and be able to graph all that shit. Something aimed more at serious athletes than fitness people.

That's exactly what I'm learning. :P I'm getting a better comp later that might actually be able to handle some of the stuff I throw at it. If you gave me some graphics or something and let me know everything we need it to do I could start working on it. Would also give me a chance to learn C# :D haha (After starting in C++, I've realized it's a total pain in the ass)

If you learn C# then Java isn't a huge leap. I would suggest learning python, ruby first the C# or Java, maybe jump to this first if you're feeling a little bit more adventurous, and then C. C++ can confuse the fuck out of you if you do it first. Incredibly powerful language from combining OO and low level prodecural/functional programming from C but also very hard for a newbie to learn, let alone learn to produce proper readable and efficient code.
