Good job with the tournament.

thanks!

is it free entry for anyone or is there requirements to join?

nah not free.. each tournament has a fee of ~$25-$40. Other than that, no requirements; you can just sign up, pay, and play.

sleep = 7.5 hours

bw = 172
soreness = none
aches = right hip slightly, back slightly, right hand slightly
injuries = none

felt really good today.

Food

- orange juice
- greek yogurt

Tennis match: ~10 AM ET

- lost 6-0, 6-0
- HEH! got wrecked.
- match lasted ~1.5 hours (edit: including ~10-15min warmup)
- played very safe..
- lots of safe rallies until i'd hit it to short, guy would hit it back then go to the net, i'd hit it back weak and he'd put it away
- several games went to deuce, lots went to 40-30 then i'd lose it.
- served pretty good, a few aces, but also had some critical double faults
- when i'd hit a wimpy second serve, i'd get wrecked.. i did that because I worried too much about getting it in
- had some really good gets when the opp basically thought he hit a winner

Food

- fruit
- greek yogurt
- orange juice

Tennis: 1 PM ET

- lost 6-1, 6-2
- match lasted 1 hour 45 minutes (edit: including ~10-15 minute warmup)
- tons of games went to deuce
- all of my points came on breaking the opponent's serve
- this match should have been alot closer
- guy had a very powerful / flat serve but it rarely went in, then he'd hit a weak second serve.. when his first serve went in, was very hard to get it back
- aced him a few times
- he aced me once
- had some really good gets when the opp basically thought he hit a winner
- opp had a crazy slice, put some serious spin on it, sometimes i'd stop dead in it's tracks.. but that's because he was slicing my weak safe shots, so he could slice the hell out of it
- i wanted to hit with way more power in this match but i just couldn't.. safe weak shots. not high over the net but just weak.

had fun, that's for sure.

a few issues I need to improve:

- I sweat like a faucet.. makes the racquet more slippery.. how to fix? heh.. i wear a wrist band but that doesn't help too much.. I changed racquets, that helped temporarily.

- Serving! This is by far my biggest issue. I need a more accurate first serve and a much better second serve. I'm serving way better than I was a month ago, i'm getting much more of them in.. but not enough.. and when I worry about double faulting, my second serve is way too weak.. opponent can just destroy it if they want.

- Not hitting my strokes with speed/power.. I need to get back to hitting most every shot with a fast stroke. This has almost become an issue in my head now, very psychological. I worry too much about getting it in, in a match, than just crushing it. In practice hitting I can crush it. No reason I shouldn't be able to crush alot of these shots in the rallies.. I really need to remove this barrier and hit my shots properly in matches.

weird things in the tournament:

- usually forehands are my most trustworthy shot, but, during this tourney, my backhands were actually much more trustworthy. I was getting most of them in, and not even worrying about it.. I was second guessing myself on every forehand, sucked.

- the clay courts had crappy lines.. was really bad in my first match.. when a ball clips those lines, it can go anywhere.. some of them just launched straight up, some went off to the side etc.. surprised me initially; was expecting a ball to bounce normal and instead it bounce like 15 feet in the air (on a serve).. was funny.

- everyone was sweating profusely even after the first game.. was HOT AS FUQ.. I was like a faucet by the end of the matches.. taking a ball out of my pocket, bouncing it once before the serve, it'd pick up tons of clay because it was soaked.. (second match).. lol.

Food

- big thing of popcorn chicken
- chocolate soy milk
- some chocolates

Food

- some halloween chocolates

Session: Late Evening

jump rope:
- 6 x 500
- wanted to do more but a police helicopter was hovering around with a spotlight
- jump rope was surprisingly shitty.. lots of mess ups
- need to do this somewhat frequently; it's also good for my wrist/rhythm/fat loss.
- forearms/shoulders and glutes were getting way too tired.. probably just burnt from my matches today.

Food

- greek yogurt
- fruit

- still feeling a bit better at the end of the night.. but I need to keep fixing this right TFL

tennis tournament tomorrow! word! playing someone who beat my dad a few times.. he's also the #1 seed in the tournament (out of 4 people hah).. he's the only one that's ranked because of previous tournament play or something. glad to be facing him in the first match though, will be fresh.

"revenge for my father" <- jajaja... or I get wrecked.

Hey Andrew,

Noticed you're drinking lots of chocolate soy milk.  I'm sure all the talk of soy milk being bad for you is overblown, but what's your take on them?  Also is there any validity to the phytoestrogen stuff people say 'messes with ur hormones'?

There's so much conflicting info online I just wanna hear what your take on them is

no idea tbh. i'm trying not to drink a crazy amount of it so, if there is some legitimate issues with it, i'll hopefully avoid it by not going overboard with it.. i've basically done GOMAD before, but just because I loved milk and used it as a goto source. That probably wasn't too healthy.

not sure though really. I like LBSS's post/quote on this.

fwiw, I feel fine drinking soy milk. I've never experienced any kind of noticeable negative effects from drinking it.

i like the new journal name.

eric, have you ever considered doing like, 30-60 minutes of jump rope straight? By straight I mean continuous or rounds (3min on, 1min off). I used to do that near-daily when boxing, loved it & miss it. I've been thinking about bringing it back myself, as a finisher to one of my morning or evening sessions. Having a good rope makes it even more fun, I have a Buddy Lee speed rope, that thing can fly.

Frequent + long jump rope sessions are definitely good for the physique.

Shoes / Lotto Quaranta VIP

http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/Lotto_Quaranta_VIP_Grey_Green_Mens_Shoe/descpageMSLOTTO-LMQVGG.html

LBSS recommended and approved.. well maybe not this exact version, but lotto quaranta's in general.

Love these: price + very light + foam is extremely comfortable/bouncy. I move around great in them.

I do have some issues with them:
- they seem to wear down very fast when playing tennis on hard court: foam sole is grinding down very quick, little holes starting to appear. I've probably played with them ~15 times and they are definitely wearing down quick.
- the insoles they come with are HORRIBLE. I would have ripped them out but they ripped out the first time I wore them.
- since the insoles suck (thick cushion feeling), I have to put my own insoles in them, because the sole is this raw mesh that'll wreck your feet. I just wish they had a normal fabric sole so I could wear them without an insole.

I like these alot better than my Lotto Quaranta IV's.

Shoes / New Balance 60's (tennis shoes)

http://www.newbalance.com/pd/new-balance-60/MC60.html?dwvar_MC60_color=Grey_with_Orange#color=Grey_with_Orange

Just ordered these. I really like my Lotto Quaranta VIP's, but I seem to rip them up pretty fast. I still plan to use my lotto's on hard courts, since they are so cheap and light. For tournaments though, I might use these NB 60's. I imagine they will be built "better" and I won't need to put insoles in them (like I do with my lottos).

Minimalist shoes > * .. I actually have some normal tennis shoes, they are tanks compared to lotto's and most likely the NB 60's. Will update once I get them.

Progress Journals & Experimental Routines / Re: Two Hands Two Feet
« on: October 30, 2015, 12:28:07 am »
Grand final ball game last night. We lost by 6. It was a really tight game and there was only a point or two separating us all game until they got a run on with about 10 mins to go to put it out to a 10 point lead. We pegged them back but just couldn't close the gap. Pretty frustrating game though. They banked 2 threes in the first 5 mins and had quite a few lucky shots drop. The kind that just shouldn't go in. Either way we had our chances too.

I told the team I'm not in for the next season so I can concentrate on lifting and then get back to hapkido over the next couple of months. Pretty excited about that. I think I will still fill in every now and then just to keep the desire to make a full blown return at bay. I get the bug if I don't play for too long and I think playing every 3-4 weeks will remind me of the good and bad about it.

makes sense, good idea.

how long have you trained hapkido in the past?

those vivobarefoot shoes look nice. love minimalist shoes.

sleep = 8 hours
bw = 171
soreness = none
aches = ankles a little, right hip, lower back
injuries = right ankle slightly (feels a little weird)

Food

- orange juice

Contrast Shower

Session: Morning

Crazy humid this morning.. sweat my brains out, was soaked.

tennis:
- 2 hours
- almost beat my dad in the first set, lost 7-5.. really should have had that set
- was moving very fast on the court, got to every ball.

Food

- lots of fruit
- orange juice
- 2 greek yogurts

Session: Evening

tennis:
- 2 hours
- lefty practice
- serve practice
- tried to stay light with the serves, work more on form.. biggest things that help me with serves are: 1) chest up, 2) committing to continental grip & whipping the racquet .. by committing i mean, not letting my hand slide to a different grip.

Food

- chipotle salad bowl, double chicken
- stacys pita chips
- 2 glasses of chocolate soy milk

Food

- greek yogurt
- 7 bananas

feel a bit wrecked tonight but.. should feel alot better in the morning.

tennis tournament soon! there are only 4 people in it.. hahah! I think i'll get 2 matches at least. I'm going to try my chances at 4.0 level. One of the players in the tournament has beaten my dad a few times. One of the other players my dad has beaten a few times. And the third player is in his first tournament, like myself. Should be interesting.

Thats whats up, gotta be nice living in florida so you can do that stuff pretty much year round

ya definitely, the only thing that we have to worry about is rain. Comes and goes out of nowhere, all year round. Basketball/Tennis courts dry fast though so, that's cool.

those would be some solid numbers, nice.

ya that yang SVJ is nuts. If SVJ is an eventual goal, i'd definitely start mixing in SVJ's as soon as possible, even if it's just a few jumps 1-2x/week. They also serve as nice warmups for squatting. You can mix them up too; squat jump, cmj, paused cmj etc. Don't want to be primarily making movement efficiency gains when you're nearing your goal squat numbers, you know? Better to integrate that as your squat is going up, IMHO.
