so.. my NB XC900v2's actually make me heel->toe more than my Saucony Shay XC4's. It's a "light heel->toe" though, which doesn't feel bad. It might have to do with the strength of the sole. The saucony's remain more rigid in the midfoot/forefoot after being broken in.

not saying this is a bad thing, just something I noticed.

yo!

what do you think of these...never really thought of merell as a running brand before but they look good...

http://www.merrell.com/US/en/bare-access-4/17570M.html

they look nice for sure, I like them.. only thing I actually don't like about them is the vibram sole. I actually don't like running in my NB minimus's because of their vibram sole. After experimenting with both for quite some time, I DEFINITELY prefer a "normal sole" for road running (or even running on rocks/dirt/grass etc); much stronger/springier.

Quote
minimal, zero drop but with some cushioning. vibram soles too - so they'll last.

they do a trail version too

http://www.merrell.com/UK/en_GB/bare-access-trail-gore-tex/17461M.html

like LBSS said, I just don't like that they are 9oz. That would feel pretty heavy to me for running, but i'm so used to shoes that are 4-5 oz.

Here's the NB minimus trail's I have: http://www.newbalance.com/pd/minimus-10v3-trail/MT10-V3.html?dwvar_MT10-V3_color=Black_with_Orange#color=Black_with_Orange

A bit lighter (7oz instead of 9oz). I just don't like running in them though. Vibram sole feels weird in a "normal shoe", but feels much better in the actual vibram's (finger toe style). Maybe it's because we're much more cognizant of what's on our feet and what we shouldn't do with them when we're in the actual finger-toe style shoe. Not sure tbh.

Vibram soles are definitely durable though & the way we run in them keeps them from "grinding down". My minimus's look brand new & so do my vibram's. My NB XC900v2's wear down fairly quickly, but my Saucony Shay XC4's are bionic; over a few hundred miles on them and this "protruding tread" is still there, it's mind blowing. Hoping these NB 5000v2's have a more beast sole than the NB XC900v2's.

sweet. i was also looking at these earlier: http://www.eastbay.com/product/model:198614/sku:99532008/nike-zoom-streak-lt-2-mens

did you ever get zoom streaks? they're 5.x ounces i think.

nice, havn't seen those. They look solid. I like the bottom.

The bottom's of the NB 5000v2's look like they will wear down faster than those streak's.

Shoes / New Balance 5000v2 - Spikeless running shoes
« on: January 07, 2016, 03:33:54 pm »
Soo.. i've been thinking about getting a pair of "running flats" instead of "cross country flats". Something that road runners/racers are actually out there competing with for asphault 5k-10k's etc. I did several days of research and decided on these:

http://www.newbalance.com/pd/5000v2/MRC5000-V2.html#color=Hi-Lite_with_Black&width=D

They are < 4 oz (~3.6 oz), wtf?  :wowthatwasnutswtf:  ... they have a ~5mm drop. Certainly not zero (like I prefer), but probably close enough for a running shoe.

One reason i've shy'd away from shoes like this is: cost. My XC flats are always MUCH cheaper.

Man I love New Balance.. so I imagine I won't be disappointed. I will probably get to try them out tomorrow.

Bio: Morning

sleep = 9 hr
wakeup = 10:00 AM
bw = 157 lb.
morning resting heart rate = didn't measure
soreness = calves slightly, legs a bit tight, left shin painful (but went away ~1 hr after waking up)
aches = right elbow slightly, left achilles SLIGHTLY (on only a few strides) when I ran in the evening
injuries = toenails wrekt.

teeth cleaning & stuff pushed back my morning.

Session: Afternoon

2 PM - 3 PM

upper:
- mostly dip/pullup/ng pullup variations

- notables:
-- parallel bar dips: BW x 10
-- dead hang ng pullups (pulling up even higher now): BW x 7
-- dead hang pullup singles: BW + 30 lb. x singles
-- went to failure: dead hang ng pullups, parallel bar dips, dead hang pullups; adding 10 lb, 20 lb, 30 lb.
-- parallel bar dip partials at the bottom: BW x 15-20

- dip belt snapped at 40 lb.
- finished with core (leg lifts from dip & pullup position)

- pulling up higher on my pullups/chinups/ng pullups etc.. because of strength gains.. if i pull up a bit higher, it'll make muscle ups easier

Food

3 PM

- 1 x failife whole milk

Food

3:30 PM

- 6 x eggs over easy
- 1 x greek yogurt
- 1 x orange juice
- 2 x banana

Session: Evening

7:45 PM

crap session.. dead

jump rope warmup:
- 5 x 100, very fast
- based on this, figured it would be a good session

run:
- 3.71 mi in 24:48
- legs tight (quads especially), felt my achilles "ache" on a few strikes, mentally dead
- strike: mostly heel->toe
- avg speed: 9.0 mph / 6:41 min/mi
- max speed: 11.4 mph

splits:
- 5k: 20:21
- ^^ ran like crap and actually ran my best 5k since running with the watch.. heh
- mile 1: 6:16.3
- mile 2: 6:40.0
- mile 3: 6:39.5

got to this ~3.5 mi point and decided to just head home because of how I felt, primarily due to the achilles ache. That "jolt" it took yesterday definitely strained it a bit. It doesn't seem like anything serious though soo..

lift:
- bad

bb deep squat, pausing on low pin:
- planned on doing 155 lb. @ 5 x 5
- instead i did:
- 45 lb. x 10
- 135 lb. x 5
- 155 lb. x 5
- cut the workout here well early.

Food

- fake greak salad with a decent amount of grilled chicken
- 1 x greek yogurt

Food

- 1 x fairlife whole milk

a combination of things wrecked my evening workout.. including kcal intake.

that long run yesterday might have drained me quite a bit too, even though it was only ~2 miles more than I usually run on my long run.. quad tightness and right elbow definitely suffered from that run.

all good tho.
