Basketball / Re: BYU suspension

i agree, just like people have the freedom to hate on the rule, BYU has the right to make and enforce this rule..man Jimmer is the man, is he mormon?

Obviously, the dunking world is full of genetic freaks who can dunk without touching a squat rack in their lives.  Who are some of the best examples of the opposite- guys who have become extremely strong, and as a result, or at the same time, developed great VJ or RVJ?  Talking about the guys that you can definitely say "they are damn strong" and they can jump freaking high(and there is a strong correlation).

My few:

KINGFISH : Dude can fly and squats a ton

RIP
the short guy can also fly and squats a lot

Not trying to start a pro squat only freaking CoolCol J thread, but for the average "white boy" developing a big time squat can be essential to developing some serious ups, not to mention it really is the most trainable essential part of Vertical jumps.

Football / Re: Why there is more to football than speed and strength
« on: March 08, 2011, 08:29:09 pm »
Well if you are still in HS good for thinking critically about it. I know I wish i would have spent more times perfecting routes, catching passes, working on getting off ball, 1 on 1 break downs, pass rushing techniques ETC.

A ton can be mimicked without the use of pads/hitting, people just dont think critically and come up with drills, instead relying on weight training and a few passing tournaments every summer.

agreed, which is a shame that so many high school kids focus solely on squat, bench, and maybe a little bit of conditoning. So much more goes into the game of football. If you are a skill guy, you should be out working on the intrinsics of your position, same with linemen.

A basketball player wouldnt simply spend a summer lifting weights, why would a football player?

i think the police almost tasered him once  8)

hmm never did them like that

Another great but under used exercise for improving lower/upper body in terms of vertical jump power- overhead med ball throws, almost same thing as swings except your letting go for distance or height

dont agree at all, there can be a ton of discrepancy between having a good stand broad and good standing vert IMO. Especially shorter guys/less lanky guys are at a disadvantage standing broad jump wise, same goes for those with form issues(flexibility, actually technique in terms of broad jump)

Not sticking up for the guy nor do I care what he jumps lol Just saying from observation and experience

For example, in the past I had standing vert of 30, yet I could barely get over 9 on broad and maybe only did a few times..

different opinions I guess, obviously all guys mentioned have a ton of experience and knowledge. I personally like a lot of what Smith says as I have met him and talked with him various times, and hes know his shit big time. guy is real smart and truly brings that "attention to detail" . Not to mention anyone that has made it through hell week(twice and been iron man i think) is good to go in my book but thats a different story.

Still encourage anyone to try either way out for themselves and go from there, one would be a fool to except anything as straight gospel

One part about defrancos piece I like is train back like body builder, at least to general sports population, too many people bench bench bench and neglect back work.
