Strength, Power, Reactivity, & Speed Discussion / i'm hopeless
« on: May 31, 2013, 09:09:04 am »
So I joined a pretty competitive league.  I must say that though i have been training for vertical religiously the last 14 months, i was actually training for speed.  I did lots of squats and hip extensions and hamstring stuff almost every other day at near 90% RM.  I am overweight but its okay.

Last night i was able to outrun some extremely gifted athletes, but the problem is when ur running at 50mph... ur kind of out of control and u can't get elevation.  I want to be able to run that fast AND get some elevation/control...

it's over after the 11th.

i started doing some snatch/ cleans from the ground, real light.  it was tough, clipped my knee cap a few times.  then one of the times, the bar went off my balls and i just dropped the weight in mid air.

i can't seem to let it go off the hip crease, because something seems to get in the way, honestly.  now i am paranoid about doing a high power clean or snatch.

There really ain't too many people with a 40" SVJ.  Theres like a few in NFL, such as maurice covington, and basically 0 in the NBA.  Maybe Gerald green, but i doubt it.  And maurice has killer genetics, plus 6'5 body frame with longer limbs to propel himself up in the air.

Let's look at asians.

1. Frank yang, mental patient bodybuilder nutcase, not even pro athlete or advanced athlete, but bodybuilder hits 40' SVJ

2. kingfish, just a dedicated working man, not a pro athlete.

3. myself, i don't have a 40" SVJ yet, but i'm pretty sure i'll get there at the rate i'm going.  I started training late @ 27 and after 1.5 years, I increased SVJ by 6 inches, and still @ 25% BF!!!

The reason why asians are the king of the SVJ is because 1) they have shorter tibia, which allows them to squat and train better 2) they have been known to be more flexible and once again that helps with doing solid squats.  a lot of the world class gymnasts and contortionists are chinese.  3) there fast twitch muscle fibers aren't as good as people of west african descent, but it is certainly better than people of kenyan descent, who have the least amt of fast twitch fibers and the most slow twitch fibers (hence they always win the marathons).  So muscle fiber is not great, but not bad.

4. CNS-- asians have superior cns compared to other races.  there is a sport that takes tremendous reflexes and reaction time.  it is called pingpong.  and the chinese just annilate everyone.  have you ever seen a pro chinese pingpong match live?  i have, and the truth is, you can't even see the ball.  all you see is 2 guys slamming @ the air and it almost hurts your neck.  another example is kungfu.  man these guys have sick reflexes.

guy dresses kind of retarded like an amphibian queer, acts like a sensitive retarded amphibian, and never gets injured.  it's like he's got amphibian joints that go beyond 180degrees.  his game is most proned to ankle sprains... all that high elevation jumpshot and drives/slashes.

4 years of high school, 3 years of college, 4 years of nba... never missed 1 game.  and i'll just assume 4 years of grade school he probably didn't get injured.

Generally, how many times should the 1/2 squat and 1/4 squat be added to a routine of at least 3x full squats per week?  At what rep/weight?

129
doing working sets is good.  but why are some of you so adamantly against attempting to max out 1RM.  what is the logic behind it?

130
3 days ago, hit 9 x 265, 9 x 265, 10 x 265.... albeit bad form on last few reps.  Also did some 1/4 supra max the last week.  Now, I can't even do 5 x 265 without almost collapsing.  What happened.  I always recover pretty good in 3 days.

The theoretical jump calculator assumes one has an okay amt of reactivity correct?  Because I should have 31in SVJ according to that, but i can only manage 28 SVJ on a good day.

And the reps calculator definitely gives too much credit when you are doing reps higher than 5.

Been waiting a year to start plyo's, but never gotten down to near 10% bf.  However, strength has gone up from 225 to 315 squat.  So currently I am around 175-177 @ 18% bf.

I planned on getting my plyo's from bball, but my ankle is tender for full court games (too muc change of direction).  It will take a long time for ankle to heal because it is a tendon strain.  But it is at 80%, and plyos are okay.

I plan on adding 4 x 5 depth jumps 2x a week, and box step up jumps 3 x 10.

Is this okay?

The back squat has definitely helped my posterior chain strength and overall strenght for that matter, but it really hasn't done much for my athleticism.  It has increased my SVJ by a decent amount in 1 year (5 inches) but not much for RVJ.  But worse of all is that the back squat has been terrible for my posture and has made my anterior pelvic tilt and kyphosis worse.

I was chatting with former Euro league bball standout and now strength /bball trainer for Bulls/collegiate players.  His take is that the back squat isn't an exercise that is too efficient for athletes, except for powerlifters.  It doesn't mimic the jumping movement like the front squat which is a lot better for one's back.

So i advise all you squat junkies to start front squatting, snatch, and cleans and start saying goodbye to the back squat.
