appreciate it man, saw the vid the first time around, didn't expect a shoutout or anything and wasn't upset that you didn't put one, but it's cool that you put one in, adarq.org thanks you :F

just glad you hit your "promise" before graduating, must have felt great, looks like it did from your reactions after the dunks.

with all of the injuries and "roadblocks" you faced, it's great to see you finally throw one down, and not just some weak shit, those were hard/strong dunk.

peace

Yea it was insane, i never really understood why when the athletes win their olympic medals they start crying and everything.  It was real surreal when it happened. Working towards one goal for so long, and having injuries and everything, other ppl don't believe in you, you believe but at the same time it's not like at points you don't start to question and wonder and everything, but then it finally happened.  felt like the fucking man when it did. but was also real emotional.

Just wanted to give you credit though, since you have helped me a  lot and supported me the entire time, and was annoyed with myself that i put the other ppl but forgot to list you.

i knew i could dunk for a decent while already, that i was getting high enough.  It was just a matter of getting over that mental block of 10 ft, and also figuring out a better way to try.  The jumps felt a lot easier coming in from that right side compared to how i would usually come in from the left.  Once i through that first one down though, the other makes all pretty much happened right after with a few misses in between.

Part of the reason too, why I hadn't thrown one down was case i didn't want just some bitchy weak one as my first dunk and dunks, i wantead legit hard throw downs.

My story is similar, although I wanted to dunk before I finish high school and did it one week before I finished it.

In terms of your improvement, the compression was MUCH better when you made your dunks. You should, IMO, train with double leg bounds for length for a while. They will teach you to get deeper and compress and release better and consecutively. That will translate into better compression in your jumps after a while IMO.

There is so much more potential to jump higher right now if you'd get deeper in the plant and BE ABLE to get out of there quickly.
Current PR status:

All time hip thrust (same as old age hip thrust): 160kgx5reps

^ Definitely more potential. I was VERY surprised to see your head that close to that 9'3" cushion on the backboard. Are you getting up 38"? Doesn't even look like that much because of the approach... you'll be at 40" soon.

yea i kind of think the same thing, however i think part of the reason why i don't get deeper is that i swing my arms down as i go into the plant which raises me up a bit .

Yea i guess it's about 37-38 on those jumps.  Measured the foam quickly but it should be pretty accurate, because i remember measuring the foam in a different gym at my school and it was like 9 ft4.  I'm thinking as well with good form and a really good jump i could probably hit 40 which would be insane

was not that interested in working on the form before because i figured let me get a lot stronger and everything first, but now that i have some decent strength and hops, i think it could benefit me a lot

Dude that's dope how you dunked 1 day before graduation.  Congratulations man!

I can't imagine the day I finally dunk.  The way you describe it, feels like it will be the same for me.  It will be an emotional moment, knowing how long and hard I've worked on it, while others around me either straight up doubted me, or pretended to go along with me while doubting me on the inside.  They all thinking "this 5'9" asian guy thinks he's gonna eventually dunk?  LOL"

Congrats again
Goal is to dunk.

Vertical needed to dunk: 40"

Current vertical : 38.5"

What's your reach? If the measurements are correct, you jump as high as I do at my peak and I've thrown down a 2-handed tomahawk (ball on neck).

Work on your approach and tap into that potential  :ibjumping:

Also, ineedtodunk, when I was first able to dunk it was very weird... I'd walk up to the rim and look at how high it is, and i'd think "I'm able to dunk on that? HOW?" it's weird as hell. Like you literally won't believe it's physically possible for you to dunk but you're able to do it. I don't know how else to describe it.

reach is about 7 ft 11, 2 handed tomahawk would be pretty tough, need to get higher
will start working on from more now though

yea i used to look up at the rim, and it seemed so high, but now i look at it, and i think to myself, really , that's it.  it's so low

I know the feeling. Sometimes the rim looks so high and yet... :ibjumping:

For example, when I got to the court where I used to dunk on the 10'3 rim, I was like "how the hell could I dunk on this in the past?".

And then I go and dunk on that.

nba8340,

With a 7'8 reach I dunked a tomahawk and about a 38" running vertical. I think you're able to do it with a reach 3" higher than mine (I did this last year and this year also, this year my reach is 7'9).

You actually don't have to get up higher than you do on a regular 2-handed dunk (but obviously it helps a lot). When I first threw one down, I completed the tomahawk motion just as I reached the peak of my jump. The thing that's tough is not letting the ball slip lower into your hand, and THAT'S what makes you need to get higher to tomahawk.

But if you can complete the motion before the peak of your jump, and not let the ball slip lower into your hands, you can tomahawk if you can 2-hand it :)

It also helps that I started the motion a little early so I'd be able to complete it.
