Jack Woodrup Jumping Video

Hi Guys

Amongst all this requests for coaches who sell programs not having any videos talk I thought I would make a quick video and post it.

HTML EDIT ^^

I have a standing reach of 227cm and would say I got probably 5cm of my fingers above the rim so that is a RVJ of about 78cm or 31inches. In the big scheme of peoples jumping ability that isn't that great but here is a few things to consider

1) I am nearly 36 years old
2) I have not trained my vertical jump in nearly 2 years at all
3) I have chronic tendonitis in my right knee so max effort jumping like this actually really, really hurts (and it shows in my lousy jumping form, poor run up etc).
4) As a result of 3 I only ever do max effort jumping like this about once every 6 months when the thought occurs to me along the lines of - "I wonder if I can still grab the rim"

These jumps are well down on my max jumping days but given the above points, and also the fact I am now 8kg heavier than I was when I just trained for jumping, I am actually reasonably happy with those jumps.

Anyway, feel free to laugh, call me out, argue about freaky elbows, low rims, dodgy camera angles or whatever else you feel like. I just thought I would post a vid for you to see.

Cheers

Jack

done!

nice post man, great to see a jumping vid from you.. the run up doesn't look near as bad as you think it does, if you practiced more sure, it would be much more efficient, but you can see the base efficiency is there.. all that's missing is more power, other than that, the runup + jump looked good imo.

nice post man!

The only thing I see wrong with the run up is that you stay too tall. Then the last say 2-3 steps are very good. But you don't seem to benefit from all of the steps before at all... you don't take in energy from those to release it in the plant.

I have a feeling you'd jump as high just with a three step approach.

You still plant much better than me off two feet, great compression.
Current PR status:

All time squat: 165 kg/Old age squat: 130 kg
All time deadlift: 184 kg/Old age deadlift: 140 kg
All time bench: 85 kg/Old age bench: 70kgx5reps
All time hip thrust (same as old age hip thrust): 160kgx5reps

Thanks for the kind words guys.

My run up and plant used to be much different. It felt much much smoother when I did a lot of it. What you see in the video is someone who has done little to no max effort jumps in a long time. With the sore knees I also feel a bit nervous running in now because I know I am going to pay for it the rest of the day.

I also really feel the extra upper body weight and loss of strength. In addition to my extra 8kg in weight my squat 1Rm would be down about 25kg and my deadlift down probably 40kg from before my knees called it a day on me.

Still not the same as a dunk video but it will have to do for you.

Cheers

Great stuff Jack!

BTW , 305cm ( 10' ) + 5cm above = 310cm touch. With 227cm reach , you need 83cm ( 32,6'' ).

So unless the rim is not 10' , congrats on your new  :ibjumping:  :personal-record:  ;)
Target training paces (min/km), calculated from 5K PR 22:49 :
Easy run : 5:48
Tempo run : 4:50
VO2-max run :4:21
Speed form run : 4:02

---

it's the biggest trick in the run game.. go slow to go fast. it doesn't make sense until it smacks you in the face and you're like ....... wtf?

New Jack Woodrup Jumping Video

Hi Guys

I just made a new jumping video after my basketball game tonight. I turn 37 tomorrow and despite not doing any real jump specific training for quite a while now I was actually jumping pretty well.

Anyway guys, here is my video, for a guy my age I am both pleasantly surprised and happy with how the hops are holding up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNB8NqadAu4&list=UUdI-m5fA_yG1FWisJyKfunw&index=1&feature=plcp

If you compare this one to my older one you will see a much improved run up which I think comes down to the fact my knees are much better than they were in 2010. I credit the front squats with that. Since I started using the front squat harness they are holding up much better.

Cheers

Jack

Thanks LBSS. That first one felt really great. I was surprised myself by how much spring I got off the floor on it.

Thanks for that Acole!

The original video from 2010 was shot at MSAC but the one from yesterday was at Boorondara Sports Complex (BSC) in Balwyn. I play a half court pick up game Tuesday mornings at MSAC with a bunch of friends (old guys basketball) and I play A-Grade on Thursday nights at Balwyn. I was feeling quite good after my game last night so I thought I would test out the legs.

:uhhhfacepalm: Haha so it is, been ages since I've been to Boroondara. Nice, you must have some skills to play A-grade there,   heard it's pretty competitive.

When I was younger I played in the ABA (level below our NBL), but now I just enjoy the run.  ;D
