i was looking around on Kelly Baggett's site and came across him saying he felt taking glycine was more effective than taking glucosamine - http://www.higher-faster-sports.com/bestsupplementforjointhealth.html

personally i used to take glucosamine but playing lots of basketball 4-5 years ago (2-3 hours daily, 3-3 and full court) i physically felt zero difference once i stop taking multivitamins and glucosamine all together.  the only difference was i stop peeing yellow.  now that i'm few years older and entering into 40's now i'm a bit more cautious.  on the plus side glycine is cheap to buy here in Taiwan.  it is sold as a food grade additive (sweetener).  made by Japan's Showa Denko 1kg shipped is only 410nt or ~$13.  i plan to try some and report back the results.  a quick search on this site only turn up a handful of post about it and not much discussion.

i took a quick look at couple of google results and it seems like a good supplement:

from these sources, they all seem to indicate glycine as positive and with no drawbacks.  summary:

I take Glycine... probably a placebo but it seems to be better for my knees than glucosamine.

most ppl seem to take 3g right before they sleep and sleep quality goes up a bit.  many also report general moods being better if taken during the day.  do you feel those effects?

Unless I'm mistaken, these guys are talking about pure glycine. Soybean is certainly not 100% glycine, more like 2% w/w. Maybe the name has confused you?

Yeah that's the scientific name for soybean. As far as I can tell, it has absolutely nothing to do with the amino acid glycine ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

okay i've taken ~5 grams of glycine right before i sleep for 3 nights in a row now.  another 5 grams during the day.  i can't say i feel much more refreshed when i wake up.  however, i can tell you for sure i am dreaming a lot more and they are more vivid.  certainly that could mean deeper sleep than usual.  just about an hour ago i had a clear vivid dream that i was having an out of body experience.  like, i was able to instantly lay down and fall asleep right away.  but i would sit up and be "out of body" right away.  kind of hard to explain but it took lot of effort to "get up".  have you guys ever have the experience of trying to keep awake when you're super tired and falling asleep (or is already sleeping) and your eye lids feels like they weights a ton.  well that's the feeling when i was trying to get up except it's not just the eyes lids that felt heavy, but the entire body felt heavy until you "break from it".  it felt very real...  but as i try to turn around and look at my physical body i wasn't able to see my self clearly at all.  then i realized i was dreaming.  pretty neat experience.  i woke up not long after so i was able to recall it clearly.

as for glycine's other effects i'll have to observe more.

it looks and taste like sugar even down to water solubility.  first time i mix it with 2-3 oz of water but it wouldn't completely dissolve so now i just put i on my tongue and wash it down with water.
