Low Protein Diet and Muscle/Strength maintenance

So I'm currently in Nepal for 6 weeks and whilst the food is delicious, im probably eating around 1/4 of the protein I did at home (and I wasn't eating tonnes as it is). I'm living in a guest house with all my meals provided, and being vegetarian I find I'm eating minimal protein sources. Dairy is super expensive here too, like milk is 3x the price of UK and I'm on a super limited budget. I'm trying to get in as much as oossible, PB toast, lentils but ultimately im not getting enough.

Would my best bet be just to eat as much as possible (carb heavy) and train short and intense 2-3x a week? Or will that just make me fat?

I have another 3 weeks of being in the city then I'm going trekking for over two weeks so obviously I'm accepting a bit of muscle loss but I'm just thinking what I can do for damage limitation!

eggs? pulses (other than lentils, which you already mentioned)? yogurt (sometimes cheaper than pasteurized milk in developing countries)?

how much would you say you're getting?
Muscles are nonsensical they have nothing to do with this bullshit.

I'm getting some eggs in, were usually given 1-2 at breakfast. Could probably ask for an extra one without being rude. Pulses/lentils wise basically I'm getting whatever they out in the meals (which is about as much as my intestines can handle anyway as I don't usually eat these). I will have to give yoghurt a try that's a good call, typically higher in protein anyway.

Honestly no idea as in preparing non of my own food and it's all pretty unfamiliar. Probably around 50g... 90g if I spend half my weekly budget in milk haha. There is lots of soy milk but it's not dissimilar in price to cows. I'd like to maintain my lactose tolerance also.

50g isn't a lot but i don't think it's close to dangerously low.

what are you doing there if i can ask?

No not at all, not worried about my health or anything like that, in fact I'm probably eating healthier than I usually do. Just I'm certain I'll get weaker and lose mass over the next few weeks and want to think how I can minimise this.

I'm doing a 4 week medical elective in the big teaching hospital in Kathmandu then off to do Everest base camp via Gokyo.

a month isn't that long. i wouldn't sweat it too much. do some bodyweight exercises or find a gym and lift while you're in kathmandu and you'll be fine. whatever you lose will come back. i haven't lifted in like a year and my measurements are almost the same as they were at the end of 2016.

Yeah I found a gym here with some basic stuff so getting in 2-3 a week plus a bunch of trekking soon I'm sure will maintain some leg strength. At the end of the day it's kind of dumb to worry about losing a little bit of strength and muscle whisky bring presented with an amazing opportunity to see and do some really cool stuff.

The masses of lentils are definitely messing with my bowels lol, hopefully I adapt to them soon.

Also found that Nepal produces the world's most delicious yoghurt...it's seriously ridiculously good. 'Juju dhau' or king curd. Greek yoghurt doesn't even compare. It's thick, kurdy, tangy buffalo milk yoghurt produced in clay pots, serisoutl seriously good stuff... I reckon it's pretty high in protein at least to the standard of Greek yoghurt, full of good bacteria going by the taste that only Kefir can compare to and it's like £1 for 1000ml. I might have to try setting up a business importing this stuff to the west it's that good haha.

Well I didn't loose too much weight in my first few weeks in the city. But a case of Giardia on top of 16 days of high altitude trekking has me feeling pretty weak and skeleton-esque.

At least it'll come back quick haha and it was totally worth it for an incredible life experience. Gonna do some random gym stuff here for the next week then probably hit up a linear progress program with a hypertrophy element when I'm back!
