Henry from Brighton

hey guys,

I'm Henry and I live in Brighton, England.

I'm 23 and have lifted weights for about 7 years. The first 5 and a half of those years were spent doing bodybuilding which I kind of regret now although I liked it at the time.
I regret it because I now think of all the time I could have used to get more athletic is wasted tbh although some aspects of it were useful (I was stronger because of it).

The other year and a half I have used trying to be more athletic and powerful (trying to increase my vertical jump because I like to play basketball) I recently started doing vf2. Infact, the reason I found this forum is because I can't get on to the forum on vertfreak101 and I was searching for another way in on google and I got a link to the topic on here that was basically killing Adam Linkenauger saying that he's a scammer and stuff by advertising squatflex :P btw, I totally agree there. The squatflex looks totally crap and a waste of money.

I'm currently doing qualifications to become a personal trainer, only low level atm but I intend to progress. I'm interested in becoming a specialist in strength and conditioning so I may well have many questions to help with my own training which I hope will help when I come to train clients who may wish to increase vertical jump, decrease sprint times etc...

I look forward to future conversations  :D

hey hey, that's cool.

I train in an independent gym called cheetahs gym http://www.cheetahsgym.co.uk/  It's predominantly a bodybuilding gym and there are many guys that go there who do bodybuilding shows. Also one of the guys who used to work there did strongman competitions.. he was pretty big.
Apart from there not being any plyometric boxes or anything like that it's a great gym with more weights than I've seen in any other gym I've been to - although I've only ever been to commercial "leisure gyms"

I do play basketball when I can although I'm not very good at it so wouldn't really call myself a baller, I just like to go down to the park and play with a few of my mates and whoever's there at the time (what with it being the winter there aren't as many people there now as there is in the summer so I can't wait for it to start to get warm again). When it is warm I like to go and play 2 times a week or more if I can.

I'm 6 feet tall and can grab the rim with one hand although I have been at that level for a number of months now, that's why I decided to go for an actual jump program because I'm sure with proper training I can do better

Welcome, bro.  I definitely feel your pain on the being stuck at one hand grab FOREVER!  Nice to have you here.  Always nice to see some Basketball players from across the pond.

haha funny, glad those call-em-out threads are popping up in searches :)

it definitely will.. there are many new-age coaches who 'fail to improve their own performance to any significant degree', you can see this in the usage of ineffective training methods they utilize with their athletes.. so improving your own performance will definitely transfer very well to improving your athletes performance.

I'm 6 feet tall (6 1 with shoes on). My weight has been moving around 80 - 83 kilos for a while and my standing reach is 87 inches so my running vertical is about 33 or a little more.

at the moment my one rep max squat is 140 kg or maybe a little less because I might not quite get full depth.
my 1 rep max deadlift is roughly 160 kg.
I haven't done it in a while but my 1 rep max push press was 100kg, probably now about 95. you've probably guessed by now that I don't do too many maximum lifts as I don't normally have a spotter although I have been known to let the squat rack catch the weights on occasion when i get stuck  :-[

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys  :)

You must have really short arms.  If you're 6'1" and can only reach 7'4" (87")?

Anyways, what's up with the kilos?  I thought yall invented the English units, where's the lbs?? ;D

I had never thought of myself as having short arms but perhaps I do. Oh well, not a great deal I can do about that :P

yeah, years ago we used pounds and ounces but not any more, I don't remember using them at all so it must have been a really long time ago.
I wouldn't mind using lbs but pretty near all of the weights at the gym have kilos written on them and not pounds so it's just easier for me to do everything in kilograms.

perhaps in future I will write both when posting to make it easier for everyone.

ya that reach seems a little low but who knows, double arm or single arm reach?

regardless, got to get that relative strength up! 1.6xBW squat, needs improvement.

look forward to seeing your progress man.

my double arm reach is slightly below that by about a quarter of an inch. I just did it again and when i really stretched with one hand I got about an inch higher but no more. I also have quite small hands, it all adds up doesn't it. from the base of my hand to the end of my middle finger is 7 inches. There's a guy in strongman called Mark felix who's hands measure 10 and a half inches, that's totally unfair  :o

I'm gonna get on those squats and improve, 2.5BW squat would be awesome.
Also, would like to be able to do a pistol squat with 80kg (176 lbs). The most I've done with that before is 40 kg (88 lbs) so that's a pretty tall order, although I guess I'm lucky to be able to do them at all as it seems that many people stuggle to do them even without weight..

Double-arm reach only a quarter inch below single-arm reach?

Makes no sense at all. Unpossible. I don't believe. Pics or it didn't happen.
Muscles are nonsensical they have nothing to do with this bullshit.

lol, I'm clearly not very good at this measuring thing. a quarter of an inch is not very much is it. I usually use centimetres.

I think the most important thing to take away from this is that my 1 arm reach is 87-88 inches and my two arm reach is about an inch or a bit more lower than that. sorry for being so vague. :-X
