slight knee pain/discomfort edit: foot pronation problem

I've been playing basketball on and off since 1st year of high school where I played competitively.  I'm 27 years old.  I started training last year this time but stopped.  Lately I started again.  I am a bit overweight for my height at about 18-20% body fat and 180 lbs and 5'8.

So I started getting a little discomfort in the right knee (and it goes away some times), never had an injury of the knees that i can remember.  I was a very heavy smoker for 10 plus years, but lately i have quit.  Could this be osteoarthritis?  Could it be because of the heavy weight my knee has to withstand from playing in league games and pick up?

33yrs | 24in SVJ | >45% BF | 227LB | 5'9 | 7'5 reach | 400lb max squat paused | 5'8 wingspan | 26in RVJ

Coming back from 2 years of inactivity!

Goal: Maintain 385-405lb squat while cutting down to 165 LB

Muscles are nonsensical they have nothing to do with this bullshit.

Just take MSM or something. Our diets are apaprently very deficient in sulfur.

I've had cracking knees for over 1.5 years (i think). Last year (as in fall of 2010), my knees were so weak I stopped jump trianing and only sprinted but it ddidn't make it better. After taking MSM for just a few days they feel WAY stronger. But thtat doesn't mean it'll work for you. Your doctor would probably put you on some pill, but I suggest MSM. I take powder found it at whole foods.
"Performance during stretch-shortening cycle exercise is influenced by the visco-elastic properties of the muscle-tendon units. During stretching of an activated muscle, mechanical energy is absorbed in the tendon structures (tendon and aponeurosis) and this energy can subsequently be re-utilized if shortening of the muscle immediately follows the stretching. According to Biscotti (2000), 72% of the elastic energy restitution action comes from tendons, 28% - from contractile elements of muscles.

yes, your personal experience is absolutely the solution to the vaguely explained knee pain of a person you've never met.

GLuteus medius activation. I have completely flat feet, without any weight issues. Right foot is slightly flatter and knee problems are mostly on the right side if I have any. After working on the gluteus medius strength through some simple isometric exercises, and making sure my knees track properly while squatting, the knee health has improved.
