Field Goal Kicking

Okay, so I've been wondering. How do you think FG kickers train? I never played football, but I was curious how hard it would be to kick a fieldgoal and maybe get good enough to walk on a team somewhere. So I went out and tried to kick some field goals and did pretty well. I managed, on two separate occasions, to kick 50+ yards consistently. One time, I did it barefoot and kicked a 50yard (I have video proof) and the other time I made it to 53yardsn (no video, and with shoes on). I was able to make most of my kicks from 10-53 pretty consistently. So, this is without any real practice/training. How hard do you think it would be to make a team somewhere? I used the 3-step approach type thing I see a lot of kickers use, and of course, there were no linemen trying to block my kick. But I got great height on the kicks and great distance.

Kinda just curious if anyone knows much about it. I'll try to post that video later after work.

You seem kind of big for a kicker.
Muscles are nonsensical they have nothing to do with this bullshit.

I seem kinda big for a human according to a lot of people. Haha.

But honestly, I don't know if a coach would mind as long as I put the ball threw the uprights.

Edit:

See if this video works:

In the video, you can see the ball bounce off the back of the upright, thus our excitement. I made it a few more times, but this was the only one we got on film before my phone battery died.

uhhhhhhhh.. i'd say you have potential, that shit just rocketed off your foot in the vid and it didn't even look 'perfect' (the kick).

kickers don't really "train", they just train kicking and go do BB workouts in the weightroom to look tougher..

for them, most of their training involves actually kicking FG's from different spots on the field etc.. if you are kicking 55 yarders with people trying to block them, with hardly any training, i'd say you definitely have potential..

i'd keep practicing and then get some nice quality (HD) videos put together so you can pass them around (online, in person, whatever) to teams etc.

study the mechanics of the good kickers online, always warm up really good, gradually progressing kick distance from very close to far out etc.

interesting!

peace

The average NFL kicker makes almost $900,000 a year, according to Sports Illustrated.

GO GET IT.

Haha, I'd be happy with 1/9th of that! Once the weather here get a little warmer and dryer I'll do some kicking videos.

I have a friend that was the kicker/punter for BYU, and he was the same way.  6'5", 220 lbs, and could just kill the ball.  Being able to just do it is a big part.  I have a couple of friends that play semi pro football in Alabama (they don't get paid shit though) and their kickers are horrible!  Arena is probably the way to get your name out there, but they have a box, not just uprights.

From what my buddy told me, the NFL kickers are there because they've proven themselves under pressure situations (games on the line).  Tons of guys can hit 50+ when it doesn't matter, but not many can hit 45 yards from the right hash mark with 1 sec left and down by 2.  Give it a shot though.  You never know!  I'd be happy to claim that I helped you get into the NFL!!!
