No Floyd Mayweather/Manny Pacquiao Fight, Mayweather Announces Upcoming Bout Against Miguel Cotto
So, it's official, the long delayed Floyd Mayweather/Manny Pacquiao super fight is not happening ... at least, until Floyd serves his upcoming jail sentence and after his upcoming fight against Miguel Cotto.
Mayweather's camp announced this week that he'll return to the ring on May 5th to challenge Cotto for his WBA Super Welterweight World title.
Mayweather says the upcoming bout will be a challenge, but promises that Cotto's championship reign will come to an end once the fight is said and done.
"Miguel Cotto is a world class fighter who can never be taken for granted and continues to prove he is one of the best in boxing," said Mayweather. "It will be a challenge for me to compete with him at this weight, but this is the type of test I thrive on and gives me the motivation to train even harder. I have no doubt in my mind that my title belt collection will increase once again and Cotto's reign as champion will come to an end on May 5."
Cotto, who is coming off of the second defense of his title in a TKO win over Antonio Margarito in December 2011, says he's ready and believes he is Mayweather's most competitive career challenge to date.
"I am here to fight the biggest names in boxing," said Cotto. "I've never ducked anyone or any challenge in front of me. I have accepted everything to give the fans what they like... great and exciting fights. That is what the sport of boxing is all about; making the fights that the fans want and deserve to see. On May 5, stay tuned, because I will convincingly beat Floyd Mayweather."
Both Cotto and Mayweather have agreed to Olympic-style drug testing for the fight, one of the stipulations that held up the Mayweather/Pacquiao negotiations in the past.
The Mayweather vs. Cotto bout goes down on May 5 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and will be televised live on pay-per-view.
For now, the fight that everyone wants to see -- Mayweather/Pacquiao -- is on hold. Stay tuned...
